Description
J. W. MORRIS.
wmnow SASH HOLDER.
APPLICATION HLED JUNE 8, 1916.

r sras WINDOW-EASE HOLDER.
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, Josnrn W. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of est Frankfort, in the county of Franklin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVindow- Sash Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to builders hardware and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in window latches. v i
The primary object of my invention is to provide a latch for Windows whereby the top and bottom sashes of a window may be locked at a desired point, the latch of my invention permitting adjustment of the window sashes, tovarious points in the window frame, it being possible to retain the window partly opened without danger of intrusion by unauthorized persons.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is adapted, at times, to positively engage the window frame and both sashes of the window to prevent movement of the sashes in any direction.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of-the character described which is simple in construction, cheap to i'nanufacture, strong and durable and effective in operation, the device being so constructed as to permit of its quick and easy attachment to various sizes and types of windows.
Other objects and advantages to be de rived from the use of my improved window latch will appear from the following detail description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmental vertical sectional view of the meeting rails of the upper and lower sash of a window showing my improved latch applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view looking downwardly upon the structure shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front elevational View and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the upper and lower sash showing the arrange ment of adjusting stops.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 and 2 des- Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed. June 8, 1916. Serial No. 102,473.
ignate the meeting rails of the lower and upper sashes, respectively, of a window, the same being engaged by the-usual slanting cut as indicated at 8. The window frame is designated 1.
The window frame 4: is provided with the usual separating guide SeXtending vertically and arranged between the sashes 1 and 2.
The latch of my invention includes a base plate 6 preferably secured to the rail 1 of the lower sash by means of screws 7 or the like. The base plate 6 carries a screw 8 and a guiding lug 9, said screw and lug engaging with a manipulating plate 10 through slots 11 and 12 formed in said plate. A wing nut 13 is carried on the screw 8 and serves to engage said plate 10 to retain the same in a position" to which it is adjusted;
The plate 10 carries a pair of tubular bearing members 1 1 and 15 through which is operable a slidable bolt 16 having a head 17 on the outer end thereof. A collar 18 is formed on said bolt 16 and a coil spring 19 is interposed between said collarand bearing member 14, whereby to maintain the sliding bolt outward normally. A look ing arm 20 provided with an extension 20 arranged about the bolt 16 is adapted to engage, at times, one of a plurality of stop members 21 carried by the upper sash. Upon reference to Fig. 4: it will be seen that there are three of the stop members, one arranged at each of the free ends of the upper sash and one at the intermediate portion thereof. 0f course, I do not limit myself to this arrangement of the stop members but find this to be the most desirable location for the same. Further stop members 22 are provided in spaced relation with stop 21, said stop member 22 being oppositely disposed relatively the stop members 21 for purposes which will hereinafter appear. A groove 23 is provided in the meeting rail 1 to accommodate the stop members 21 and 22.
The inner end of the sliding bolt 16 is provided with a laterally turned portion 25 provided with a curved outer surface 26. The downturne'd portion 25 is adapted, at times, to engage with hook members 27 mounted in recesses 28 arranged in the window frame 4.. There are a plurality of the hook members 27 but one being shown.
In use, assuming that it is desired to lock both of the window sashes against movement, said sashes are moved to the closed position. The plate 10 is now moved inwardly to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the inner end of the plate 10 engaging the stop 22, and the arm 20 engaging the lowermost of the stops 21, as shown. By tightening the wing nut 13 the plate 10 may be retained in the position shown firmly locking the windows againstmovement in either direction.
Should it be desired to raise the lower sash and close the top sash, said top sash is dropped to a point bringing the intermediate stop member 21 adjacent to the latch member of my invention. Of course, it is necessary that the arm 20 be disengaged from the lowermost of the stops 21 to permit the movement of'the sashes. The arm is now engaged with the intermediate stop member and the sliding bolt 16 engaged with the frame of the window. This will look both of the windows in the position to which the same have been moved. Thus it will be seen that by the provision of my improved locking means I am enabled to retain the window sashes at a desired point without difliculty, the latching means also serving to afford a positive engagement with the window frame.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it
Copies of this patent may be obtained for is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, opera tion and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1* A window latch including, top and bottom sashes, and a window frame, of a base plate carried by the meeting rail of the bottom sash, a manipulating plate longitudinally slidably mounted on said base plate, a bolt member slidably mounted transversely on said plate, a laterally extending inturned portion provided on the end of said bolt, said window frame having recesses formed therein, hook members mounted in said reoesses adapted to be engaged by said laterally inturned portion locking the window sashes relative to the window frame, and means associated with said sashes looking the same relative each other and the window frame; I
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa ture hereto.
JOSEPH W. MORRIS.
