FFIGE.
PATEN' IMPROVEMENT IN POWER-HAMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,647, dated January 9, 1872..
SPECIFICATION.
I, JOSEPH PALMER, of Concord, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Power Hammers, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing is a section of my improved hammer, to which reference is made in the following description.
The frame of my machine is constructed of cast-iron, and may be in the form marked f f in the drawing, or in any other shape or form which may be convenient, with the anvil b and the hammer to, which moves up and down in a dovetail groove, g, in the face of the frame f, whichvsaid groove guides the hammer in its stroke. The hammer is suspended upon the end of the spring S by the connecting-rod cl, and the spring S'works upon the pivot or fixed bearing 0. The other end of the spring S is attached to the crank or other motive power. by another connecting-rod, e, which is provided with a device for lengthening and shortening at pleasure, e c.
It will be seen that, by a rapid revolution of the crank, the hammer will be thrown up and down, and the flexibility of the spring will give a sharp powerful stroke upon the anvil, or any work laid thereon to be forged. The spring S may be made with one or more leaves, as may be required for machines of different sizes, and by heavy or light hammers, and the strike of the hammer may be adjusted to the thickness of the work to be forged by lengthening or shortening the connectingrod e by the screws 6 e.
I claim 1. The combination of the hammer a, spring S, and the crank, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of hammer a, spring S, connecting-rod e, and crank, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH PALMER.
