GUSTAV FOGDE, 0F HOQ'LTIAM, WASHINGTON.
POWER-HAMMER.
v Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
Application filed January 2, 1920. Serial No. 348,983.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV Focnn, a citizen of Finland, residing at Hoquiam, in the county of Grays Harbor and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in power hammers and its chief object is to provide a machine that can be used either for general drop forging, as a bolt making machine, or as a machine for re-forming bolt heads; a square, hexagonal, etc. head bolt being changed to a rivet bolt, etc. A
further object is to provide a machine of this type that is simple in construction and efficient in operation. With the foregoing and other ob ects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a in which- Figure 1 is a view of my improved power hammer in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 Of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in front elevation.
Fig. 4: is a detail view of the anvil showing itsarrangement upon the base block.
F ig. 5 is a view in elevation of Fig. 4.
Figs. 6 and are enlarged fragmentary sectional views; at right angles to each other, of the hammer and die carried thereby.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the die.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The machine comprises the frame 1 arranged upon the base 2 and provided with the base block 3 which is formed with the part of this specification and deep set substantially V-shaped vertical groove 4 in its front face, said groove being of a depth equal substantially to one-half the diameter of the base block. The upper end of the base block is formed with a horizontal groove 5 which extends transversely across the groove 4 and registers same, said groove being stepped to form a seat for the normally stationary clamping die 6 and a runway for the movable clamping die 7, the adjacent ends of the clamp ing dies being formed with the recesses 8 to receive the work. .A'screw 9 journaled in a with the bearing 10 carried by the base block is attached to the clamping die 7 and is provided with the hand wheel 11 by which it is operated.
The frame 1 is formed with an extension 12 that terminates in the guide bearing 13 for the reciprocating head 14 that is carried and operated by the crank 15 secured to the wheel 16 that is fast upon the stub shaft 17 journaled in bearing 18 which shaft also carries the clutch section 19 that cooperates with the clutch section 20 keyed to transmission shaft 21 journaled in bearing 22 and driven by pulley 23 which is belt-connected to the power source. The clutch section 20 is controlled by the bell-crank 24 fulcrumed in a bearing 25 carried by the frame, said bell-crank being connected by pitman 26 to the foot lever 27 fulcrumed in bearings 28 of the base 2, said foot lever encompassing the base block for operation by the operator from his usual position in front of the machine. A spring 29 connects the foot lever with an eye-bolt 30 carried by the frame and serves to yieldingly retain the foot lever in raised position with'relation. to the base to normally keep the clutch sections disengaged.
The head 14 is provided with a removable face block 31 and is recessed to receive the die 32 having the recessed end 33 for forming or re-forming the bolt heads. The shape of the recessed portion 33 of the die determines the proposed shape of the bolt head. The bolt or metalbar 34- to be headed or to have its head re-shaped is placed in the anvil directly beneath the recessed end of the die 32. The foot lever 27 is then depressed to cause the head 14: to reciprocate and the die 32 to engage with the bolt or piece 34. .lVith the die 32 removed from the head and a metal block of the shape of the die substituted the head will serve as a hammer for use in the ordinary manner for drop forging.
What is claimed is In a power hammer, a frame, a guide hearing carried thereby, a reciprocating recessed head arranged in said guide bearing, a die removably'arranged in the recessed portion of said head, a removable face block for said head adapted to cover said die when in position, means for actuating said head, a longitudinally and transversely recessed base block in alinement with the said guide bearing and beneath the same, the said recesses registering one with the other, clamping dies arranged in the transversely recessed portion of said base block, said dies being normally spaced apart in the plane of the said longitudinal recess, and manually operable means for operating said clamping dies.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signa ture in the presence of two subscribing Wit 10 GUSTAV FOGDE. Witnesses:
