To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVIN ALsTROM, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Galva, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sack Holders and Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a sack holder and support therefor having for its object to provide an economical device, simple in construction, which can be readily handled, and which will save the time of workmen.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a support for sack holders which will permit of the filling of a plurality of sacks at a time and enable the sack holder to be used independently of the support.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a sack holder adapted to be quickly adjusted to bags of diflerent sizes and which will operate to maintain the bag distended to facilitate its being filled.
The sack holder comprises a contractible spring actuated frame adapted for adjustment to various sizes and types of sacks. the holder being capableof hand use as well as in connection with a revoluble and adjustable support whereon a plurality of holders may be mounted to permit of the simultaneous filling of a plurality of sac-ks successively.
The device consists also in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the construction thereof, as will be more particularly pointed out in the detailed description of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the appended claims.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that the construction therein shown is to be considered as illustrative only and not as defining the limits of the invention.

In the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings the support is shown comprising a base 1, which may be of any suitable material and form. Mounted upon this base there is provided a platform 2 having casters 3, the platform being separated also by a sleeve 4.- which may be securely fastened to an upright bar 5, said bar being shown stepped as at 6 in the base 1.
In the construction illustrated, the bar 5 is shown provided with an upper section 5 which has a bearing point 7 in the lower section 5. This upper section 5 ispreferably threaded, the threads being of high pitch, to engage a hub 8, said section 5 be ing rotated by any suitable means, such as a wheel 9, to position the hub and its head 10 at a suitable elevation from the platform 2. Secured to the hub is shown a sleeve 11 which is preferably splined as at 12 to the lower section 5 of the rod, whereby the sleeve will be permitted a vertical movement with relation to the rod but prevented from rotation thereon.
The head 10 may be of any suitable material. and form, and is shown in Fig. 2 as a spider having a plurality of extended arms 12. Each of the arms is shown provided with suitable means such as a slot 13 to re ceive a sack holder, such as illustrated in Fig. 3, said sack holder being provided with studs or wings to engage the slots 13. In the drawings the head is shown adapted to receive four of these sack holders, and the head may be elevated above the platform for a distance sufficient to permit the sack holder to engage the upper portion of a sack while the bottom thereof will rest upon the platform 9.. The elevating and lowering of the head is accomplished by any suitable means such as by the rotation of the wheel 9. to have the threads on member 5 engage the hub 8.
The sack holder illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 is shown as of a substantially rectangular frame in plan, said frame comprising a plurality of tubular side members 14:, each adapted to receive a resilient element, such as a coil spring 15 and end members 19. Within these tubular members 14 may be positioned a piston 15, the tubular member 14 being closed by a cap 16 through which attends the piston rod 17.- The piston 15 and rod 17 act as a plunger in the tubular member 14: against the spring, and if desired, the action of this plunger may be guided by a suitable bushing 18 which is shown carried by the cap 16. The other end of the plunger 17 may be secured in an end member 19, which may be tubular in form. Said end member 19 is shown having a nut 20 closing an end thereof with which engages a screw member 21, said screw member being shown as passing through an end of the tubular side member 14. This screw member is mounted so as to aid in adjusting the frame to accommodate sacks of various widths, and any suitable means may be employed to rotate the screw. The end members of the rectangular frame are each shown provided with the studs or wings 22 which are adapted to engage the slots 13 of the radial arms of the head member. These studs or wings may be in the form of a strap of metal which is folded over the end tubular member 19 and clamped thereon by a rivet 523, which rivet also serves as a stop pin for the frame and to limit its outward movement when placed between a plurality of the radiating arms 12.
It is obvious that various changes in the form and proportion of parts may be effected without departing from the spirit of the invention, and the right is reserved to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a support having a plurality of extended 'slotted arms arranged in pairs, and a sack holder having extensible means to engage the slotsof a pair of arms to retain the sack holders in position on said support between the pair of arms.
2. In a device of the class described, a support having a plurality of extended arms and a spring actuated substantially rectangular sack holder having studs to engage said arms to retain the sack holders between the arms of said support.
3. In a device of the class described, a sack holder comprising a substantially rectangularpontractible frame formed of tubular end and side members, the side members having oppositely positioned plungers, and resilient means to engage each of said plungers to maintain said frame in one of its distended positions, and threaded elements to engage the end tubular members for changing the width of the frame.
4. In a device of the class described, a sack holder comprising a substantially rectangular contractible frame having extensible and contractible end members and eXten sible side members, the side members of said frame having a tubular section, and spring actuated plungers mounted thereon, one end of each of said plungers being secured to oppositely positioned end members of said frame to project the plungers in opposite directions.
