Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed. October 9, 1916. Serial No. 124,535.
b all 'whom t finajz/ concern.'
Be it known that I, Josiarr Pniirnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coeur dklene, in the county of Kootenai and State oIdaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lawn sprinklers, and the object of my invention is the provision of a portable sprinkler especially designed for the purpose of watering comparatively small strips or areas or grass, suchas parking strips and narrow confined spaces.
wWith the average device of this character there is apt to be considerable wastage of water due to the lack of any means tor properly directing the throw of the jets or streams issuing from the sprinkler, as in the oase of small plots of lawn where a large percentage of the water generally falls upon the adjoining pavements and is entirely wasted.
It is the purpose oi my invention to provide a novel construction by means of which the foregoing disadvantage is overcome, and to this end my device includes means whereby the jets or streams of water may be discharged in either' oft' two opposite directions from the sprinkler or, simultaneously in both directions, as may be desired. And further, I provide means whereby the water is projected in such a manner that the watered area will be uniformly irrigated.
Generally speaking, invention comprises a device having a perforated top or sprinkler head of semiecircular or arcuate form in cross-section, a centrally disposed interior dividing wall extending from end to end thereof which serves to divide the sprinkler body into two separate sprinkler compartments or chambers, and a valve adapted to direct the water from the supply hose or duct to either chamber selectively, or to both chambers simultaneously. In addition to these principal elements, I also provide means for directing the water through the sprinkler in a single continuous stream, an advantageous and novel arrangement and adaptation of the sprinkler perforations, and supporting elements for the sprinkler body.
The several features of construction, combination and arrangement of Iparts will be hereinafter fully pointed out, described and ings in which like reference characters are used to indicate like parts in the several views, the numeral l .designates the lperforated dome-hke sprinkler' head, and 2 the .fiat bottom portion of the body, said head A being provided with a plurality of longitudinal superposed rows of sprinkler perforations 3 extending from end to end of the sprinkler head.
By reference to Fig. 4, it will be observed that the body of the device is divided by the interior vertical longitudinal wall structure 1l into separate chambers said wall structure extending from its valve end to the opposite end of the body, and from its top or head portion to the bottom thereof.
Disposed at one end and set in the wall of the perforated sprinkler head portion l is the valve 6 having its seat 7 provided with the intake opening 8 and the delivery openings 9-9, and also the extended nozzle passage l0 which is formed by the wall structure et. The rotatable valve plug 1l has suitably positioned openings l2-12 and I3 which are adapted to register with the former seat openings 9-9 and 10, respec tively, when the valve is turned.
From the views, Figs. 2 and 3, it is evident that by proper rotation of the valve plug 11, water trom the intake opening 8 may be directed to vboth chambers 5 5 at the same time or to either, selectively, or that the entire supply may be diverted from the chambers and directed and discharged through the nozzle passage 10 out through the nozzle 10', in a single stream.
It is desired to here call particular attention to a distinct advantage derived from the arrangement ot the sprinkler perforations in connection with the dome-shaped sprinkler head.V rIhe perforations of a given row are intended to be bored at a predetermined angle through the wall of the head, say at right angles to the are of the Wall.
lThis will serve to direct the jets of water ency be to provide a uniform even supplyV over the watered area.
A handle 14 is provided for the valve, while the pointed shouldered supporting legs l at the forward end serve to anchor the i' sprinkler in the ground, prevent back-lash due to the pressure in the iieXib-le supply hose, and also provide means for elevating or depressing'the nozzle 10', so that the stream therefrom may be directed as desired.
A coupling 16 is disposed as shown, for convenient attachment of the supply hose.
hile I have illustrated and described a 'practical and preferred form of sprinkler,
it is to be understood that I may employ the principles involved in the construction thereof in more or less modified forms, and yet remain within the scope and spiritof my invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having described my invention, I claim A lawn sprinkler having a chambered body, a hollow partition extending longitudinally of the body and dividing it into two separate chambers, one wall of each chamber being perforated, a nozzle connected to the outer end of the hollow partition, a separate intake opening' for each chamber and for the hollow partition, a supply duct, a valve adapted to direct liquid from the supply duct selectively to either chamber or to both chambers simultaneously, or to shut it o from the chambers and direct it to the interior of the partition or to cut off the supply entirely.
In testimony whereof, I hereby afiX my signature.
JOSIAH PEEPER.
