To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Fort Atkinson, county of J eiferson, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gate-Locks, .of which the following is a Specification.
aMy invention relates to improvements in devices for locking doo rs or gates.
The object of my invention is to provide a set or sets of toggle jointed fastening members, one of which may be attached to the door or gate and the other to the frame, the attachment of one of the members being slip jointed, and dependent upon the two sections being held in alinement, and locking devices being provided to hold the sections in alinement when once swung to that position, until manually released. Also to provide locking devices which will automatically move into locking position when the sections are alined, and in which a latch used as the primary locking device, may be further locked by an auxiliarylocking member which is also automatic and independent of the vibratory movements of, or strains exerted by, the toggle jointed members, and which may also be concealed in such a man nor as to be wholly out of reach of animals, and operable only by means of a manually rotatable unlocking device.
l/Vhile I have shown and described my gate locking deviceas attached directly to a gate or door, the same may, with but slight mechanical change, be attached to the frame of a gate or door, and caused to act in substantially the same manner, and while I have shown a spring actuating arm bifurcated or provided with two members adapted to engage two opposing sides of a vertical standard it is obvious that a singlestraight arm may be substituted therefor, and that such single straight arm operating in a recess will perform the samefunctions as a bifurcated arm, like that shown. That while I have shown two locking devices connected to gether by a single unlocking rod, one of said locking devices being located near the top and the other near the bottom of said gate, it will be understood that ifdesired each gate or door may be provided with a single locking device.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front view of a gate provided with a pair of my improved locking devices.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section drawn on line 2,.2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section drawn on line 3, 3 of Fig. 5, showing the position of the moving part of the locking device when the gate or door is closed.
Fig. 4: is a similar view of the locking de vice to that shown in Fig. 3 in which the op erative parts are shown as they appear when the gate or door is open, or in the act of being opened after the locking mechanism has been manually acted upon and Fig. 5 is, a side view of the locking device drawn on line 5, 5 of Fig. 3.
Like parts are referred to by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
1 is a' fence comprising a plurality of tubular members 2 connected together in the ordinary manner by a plurality of transversely arranged bars 3, 3. The gate comprises a plurality of vertical members 4; and 4 connected together at or near their respective ends by a plurality of transversely arranged bars 5, 5. Said gate and fence are, however, of ordinary construction, and invention herein is predicated upon the construction of the locking mechanism herein shown, regardless of the constructionof said gate or fence, The gate is suspended from the fence by a plurality of hinges 6, 6, also of ordinary construction.

Member 7 is adapted to swing upon the pivot post l and its free ends are provided with bifurcated arms 8 which are adapted, as the gate or door is closed, to engage the next adjacent standard 2 of the fence, whereupon member 7 swings into alinement with fixed member 7.
During this movement a wedge shaped member 9, pivoted to member 7 at 13 is retracted from the position shown in said Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 3, and whereby a latch hook 10 previously held in retracted position by the wedge 9, is permitted to engage. an angular keeper hook or short arm 11 on said swinging member, whereby said swinging member is locked and retained in alinement with its supporting shank 12, thereby securely retaining said gate or door in ts locked position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At-
tached at one end to said swinging member by the pivot pin 13 of the wedge member 9.
is a. spiral spring 14, the opposite end of said spring being connected to a lug 15 on hook 10 by a bolt 16. Thus, it is obvious that said spring 14 is drawn out and said wedge 9 is drawn forward as said swinging arm is brought into alinement with said shank, whereby said hook is simultaneously thrown into position to engage said hook ence being had to Fig. 4) by the recoil of said spring 14, whereby the gate or door is thrown with a quick positive movement toward the right or to its open position.
The shank 12 is provided with a slot 19 and provided with a clamping bolt 20, whereby as the nut 21 is turned on said bolt said shank is rigidly secured to the'tubular member 1.
It will, of course, be understood that the shank and other cooperative parts of my device can be changed or modified in their construction so as to conform to the gate or door with which they are connected.
While my device is adapted to be connected with either a gate, door, fence, a door inclosing frame'or the like, 1 have for brevity of description referred to the same in the claims as being connected with a gate and adapted to close against and be locked into engagement with a fence.
It will be observed that the latch hook 10 is provided with a projection 10 which bears against the side of the latch projection 10, as
shown in Fig. 8, thus serving as an auxiliary locking device to prevent the latch from engaging the opposing member when the gate is open and pressure is brought to bear against 1t. The locking mechanism 10 and 11 will not engage unless both members 7 and 7" are alined. Owing to the fact that the tip of the projection 10 is rounded it will pass by the end of the wedge 9 when the key post 17 is turned for the wedge is thin at that end and it will permit the projection 10 to pass along its side. This cooperative action of the wedge and the latch, whereby the wedge holds the latch securely open is an importantfeature of my invention, since it not only prevents the latch from interfering with the swinging movement of the toggle jointed members, but the additional. security afforded by the auxiliary locking wedge adapts thisdevice to be used for stock pens and farm yards and fields where it is very desirable that a secure and convenient locking device shall be employed.
It will be observed that when the memb 7 is in releasing position as shown in Fig. a shoulder 25 engages a portion 26 of the wall of member 7, which serves as a stop. The member 7 is held against the stop 26, when in releasing position, by mean-s of the spring 14 and the fork arms 8 are held in a position to engage the post 2 when the gate ordoor is swung toward closed position. The momentum of the gate or door may thus be suflicient to automatically swing the member 7 to its position of alinement, in which position it will thereupon be also automatically locked. The member 7 is preferably made hollow and serves as a housing for the latch and the wedge members and the parts associated therewith, including the catch book 11, when the latter is in looking position. One wall of this housing is, of course, open sufficiently to permit the described movement of the member 7.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the described class, the combination with a gateand gate posts, of a latch support, means for'rigidly connecting said support to a gate, a swinging arm pivotally connected to said support and adapted, as said gate is closed, to contact with one of the posts, means for locking and normally retaining said swinging arm in post engaging position, means for manually unlocking said locking means, and means for automatioally imparting a quick lateral movement to said swinging arm when unlocked, whereby said gate is thrown open as soon as said locking mechanism is released.
2. In a device ofv the described class, the

In a device of the described class, the combination of a shank, means for rigidly connecting said shank to a gate, a post, a swinging armpivotally connected to said shank and adapted as said gate is closed to contact with said post, whereby it is brought into alinement with said shank, means for locking and normally retaining said swinging arm in alinement with said shank, means for manually unlocking said locking means, a spring, a wedge connected with said look ing means and swinging arm, and means for increasing the tension of said spring as said swinging arm is brought into alinement with said shank, said wedge being adapted to bear against said locking mechanism whereby said last named locking mechanism is retained in its unlocked position until said wedge is withdrawn by the action of said swinging arm as the latter is brought into alinement with said shank.

In a device of the described class, the combination of a shank, means for rigidly connecting said shank to a gate, a post, a swinging arm pivotally connected to said shank and adapted as said gate is closed to contact with said post, whereby it is brought into alinement with said shank, a hook pivotally connected to said shank, a lug formed integral with said hook, another hook formed on the inner end of said swinging arm adapted to engage said first named hook as said swinging arm is brought into alinement with said shank, a wedge pivotally connected at one end to said shankand adapted to bear against said lug, and a spiral spring con nected at one end to said last named lug and at its opposite end with said swinging arm, the tension of said spring being 111- creased by the movement of said swinging arm, and said wedge being adapted to be drawn forward as said swinging arm is brought into alinement with said shank.

In a device of the described class, the combination of a shank, means for rigidly connecting said shank to a gate, a. post, a swinging arm, the free end of which is provided with bifurcated members, said arm being pivotally connected to said shank and adapted as said gate is closed to contact with a gate post, whereby it is brought into alinement with said shank, means for locking and normally retaining said swinging arm in alinement with said shank, means for manua gate, a swinging arm pivotally connected to said shank and adapted as said gate is closed to contact with a gate post, whereby said swinging arm is brought into alinement with said shank, means for locking and normally retaining said swinging arm in alinement with saidshank, means for connecting and manually operating a plurality of said locking means, and means for imparting a quick movement to said swinging arm, whereby said gate is thrown open as soon as said locking mechanism is released.
7. A locking device for gates, doors, etc., comprising the combination of a set of toggle jointed members, one having a short arm and the other having a hollow portion to receive said arm, a latch adapted to engage said short arm, and an auxiliary locking device adapted to engage the latch when the latter is in arm engaging position, said hollow portion constituting a guide and a housing for the short arm and locking device.

A locking device, including the combination of a set of toggle jointed members, a latch adapted to automatically engage and hold said members in alinement, and means connected with one of the toggle members for holding the latch against accidental release, when in looking position and also holding it in retracted position when the toggle members are out of alinement.
9. A. locking device, including the combination of a set of toggle jointed members, a latch for holding said members in alinement, and means for holding the latch against accidental release and also holding it in position of release when said members are out of alinement.
10. A locking device comprising the combination of a set of toggle jointed members, one of which has a forked free end, a spring for holding the forked arm in position of release, a latch also adapted to be held by said spring in position of release, and adapted to engage and hold the forked arm in locking position, and an auxiliary locking device adapted to hold the latch in looking position when the forked arm is in such position.
