Description

J. R. RAUHUT.
SPRINKLING DEVICE.
APPLICATION HLED DEC-20, 191s.
Patented May 15, 1917.
JOHN R. RAUHUT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPRINKLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 191?.
Application filed December 20, 1916. Serial No. 138,052.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. RAUHUT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in sprinkling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of water distribution and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in sprinklers.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a device of the class described adapted to have the position thereof altered while the sprinkler is in operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the class described adapted. for watering front lawns and the like adjacent the side walk without wetting the same thus obviating a nuisance common in the forms now in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel sprinkling apparatus of the nature described portable in character, which may be manipulated from a distance, efiicient in operation, and strong and durable 1n use.
A further object of my invention is to provide an apparatus in which the parts thereof are closely assembled, and combined thereby taking a minimum amount of space and rendering the device cheap to manufacture.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which, for a clear understanding of the invention, should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed, for the purpose of illustration, convenient and satisfactory embodiments of the invention. It is to be noted, in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the principal operation of the various parts.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view showing my invention in operation;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention with a supporting means associated therewith;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same, the supporting means being removed;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same, and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the distributer.
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 and 2 designate posts providing means for suspending a wire 3 which forms a supporting means for my sprinkler designated S in its entirety.
The body 4 of my sprinkler is provided with an enlargement 5 on one end thereof. The said enlargement being recessed to receive a supporting rod 6 having the end thereof enlarged and flattened to provide means for permitting the easy insertion thereof into the ground and also to prevent the rotation of the same. A pair of standards 8 and 9 are mounted on said body and are joined above said body as at 10. The neck member 11 formed at said jointure of the standards above the body is provided with a hook member 12 on the end thereof which is adapted for slidable engagement with the wire 3 forming a means for adjusting the same to different positions on the lawn that is to be watered.
The distributor of my invention comprises a substantially frusto-conical member 13 provided with a plurality of arcuate beveled portions 14 to cause the water to be sprayed. A rod 15 is loosely mounted on the end of the said distributer and eX- tends through an opening provided in the neck 11 having an end portion 16 thereof bent laterally of. the body. It is to be noted that the distributor may be adjusted to the desired position by means of the thumb screw 17 to cause the water to be distributed over the desired area. When it is desired to spray a semi-circular plot or to prevent water from extending onto the side walk I provide a deflector member 18 comprising a substantially semi-circular sheet metal member having spring wings 19 and 20 formed on the front edges thereof to engage the standards 8 and 9 and retain the same in a rigid position. The lower end 21 of the said deflector is adapted for engagement with the body of the sprinkler to prevent accidental displacement of the same.
In use the hose member 22 is attached by means of the ordinary connection in the opening 23 provided in the bottom of the body 5 of my invention and if desired to support the same in one position the supporting rod 6 is mounted in the opening 24. The water is then turned on and the same passing through the opening 23 and being discharged against the distributer 13 sprays in a circle over the lawn unless my deflector is in position, which will cause the sprinkler to operate only in a semicircular configuration;
Having thus fully described my inven tion What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a pair of posts, of a wire member suspended from and between the said posts of a sprinkler com prising a body, said body having an open ing therein to receive the water supply means and a second opening to permit the discharge of the water, a pair of standards extending from the sides of said body and joining above the same, a hook member extending from said jointure for a purpose specified.
2. The combination with a pair of posts, of a wire member suspended from and between the said posts, of a sprinkler com'-' prising a body, a pair of standards extend ing from the sides of said body and joining above the same, a hook member extending from said jointure adapted to engage said wire, said body having an enlargement formed on one side thereof, the said enlargement being provided with a recess, a supporting means for the sprinkler mounted in said recess, and the said body having means associated therewith to receive the water supplying means, and an opening formed in the said body to permit the discharge of the water.
3. The combination with a pair of posts, of a wire member suspended from and between the said'p'osts, of a sprinkler comprising a body, a pair of standards mounted on said body joining above the same, a neck member formed at said jointure, -a hook formed on the free end of said neck adapted for 'slida'ble engagement with the said wire, and a distributer suspended from said neck for a purpose specified.
4; The combination with a pair of posts, of a wire member suspended from and between the said posts, of a sprinkler comprising a body, a pair of standards mounted on said body joining above the same, a neck formed at said jeinture, a hook formed on the free end of said neck adapted for slidable engagement with the said wire, a frusto-conical distributer,- a rod mounted on said distributer, the said neck having a longitudinal opening therein, the said rod being adapted for slidable engagement in the said longitudinal opening for a purpose specified.
5; The combination with a pair of posts, of a wire member suspended fromand betweenthe said posts,- of a sprinkler comprising a body, said body having an opening therein to receive the water supply means and a second opening to permit the discharge of the water, a pair of standards extending from the sides of said body and joining above the same, a hook member extending from said joint-lire, and a semicircular defiecting member detachably associated with said standards for a purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I 'afliX my signa- JOHN R. RAUHUT.
.tur'e hereto.
