ATTACHMENT FOR HOSE-NOZZLES.
Application filed March 9, 1912.
. lowing is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention relates to a simple and effective attachment for su ortin a arden hose relative to a lawn or other portion of a garden during the watering thereof, while at the same time acting as a lever rod or controlling device for actuating or turning the spray plate for regulating the stream issuing from the outlet orifice of the nozzle; the object of the invention being'the production of an inexpensive and durable attachment capable of serving as a combined support and adjusting device for the nozzle.
To comprehend the invention reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the attachment applied to a hose spray nozzle for serving as a lever for shifting the spray plate to vary the stream issuing from the nozzle. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the position of the attachment when thrown to shift the position of the spray plate of the nozzle relative to the outlet orifice thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation disclosing the attachment thrown into a vertical position.
relative to the nozzle and applied as a support therefor. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the attachment separated from the spray nozzle.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate the nozzle for an ordinary garden hose 2, to which is rotatably held by a clamp band 3 the spray plate 4, the clamp band 3 embracing the under face of the base plate 5 of the spray plate 4 projected beyond the nozzle 1, the connection between the said base plate and the clamp being such as to permit of a limited lateral movement of the same relative to the nozzle. These parts are of the usual construction of spray nozzles at present on the market, and from the base or rotatable plate 5 depends an ear 6 provided with two Vertically disposed alined openings 7 and 7 The rotatable spray plate 4 for the nozzle 1 is turned to vary the jet issuing from the outlet orifice of the nozzle by means of the lever rod 8, the outer end of which is turned Specification of Letters Patent.

over to provide a hook 8. The lever rod extends through a lower opening 7 in the ear 6 and the hooked extension 8 thereof fits within an upper opening 7 thereof, and when so locked to the ear 6 of the base or rotatable plate 5 of the spray plate 4, the said lever rod stands in horizontal alinement with the nozzle 1, and when the said nozzle is attached to the free end of the hose 2 the said rod is within convenient reach of the operator for throwing laterally to r0- tate or swing the spray plate 4 relative to the nozzle 1 to vary the impact stream issuing from the outlet orifice thereof during the hand spraying or watering.
Then it is deslred to utilize the lever rod 8 as a support for the sprinkler or nozzle, the same is moved'forwardly to placethe hooked end .extension 8 thereof out of engagement-with the upper opening 7 of the ear 6, when the rod is given a one-half rotation .to place the hooked extension 8 be low the lower edge of the ear 6 and is then drawn inwardly its full distance, after which the rod is turned downwardly into a vertical position, in which position the lower end thereof is forced into the ground to serve as a support or holder for the spray nozzle.
To prevent the lever rod being withdrawn or detached from the spray nozzle the hooked end thereof is flattened (as shown at 9) so as to spread the metal slightly beyond the diameter of the opening 7, and to provide against the said lever rod being moved outwardly beyond a given distance the metal thereof a slight distance back of the ear 6 is also flattened (as shown at 9) to spread or expand the same slightly beyond the diameter of the opening 7. By
thus flattening or spreading the metal of' the lever rod at the points designated, the same is held at all times attached or connected to the spray nozzle and the loss thereof provided against.
It is obvious that the described attachment may be applied to any of the various forms of spray nozzles in use, and by the use thereof the spray plate may be easily and quickly shifted by the lever rod without requiring the operator to employ the hand to grasp the spray plate, thus keeping the hand from becoming wet.
I am aware that modification in the details of construction of the parts shown and described may be made without departing from the invention, which resides in the utilization of a lever rod for shifting the position of the spray plate of the nozzle for varying the stream issuing therefrom dur ing the operation of hand watering and for serving as a support for the nozzle when desired to hold the same for a time in a fixed position.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is-- 1. In a spray nozzle, the combination with a spray plate, of a lever rod pivotally attached thereto adapted to be moved into a horizontal position to serve as a means for shifting the position of the spray plate relative to the nozzle and into a vertical position to provide a support for the said nozzle.
2. In a nozzle, the combination with a spray plate, of a depending ear connected to said spray plate for actuating the same, a lever rod extended through said ear and provided with a hook extension for engag ing with the ear to hold the lever rod in a plane substantially parallel to the nozzle, said rod having longitudinal movement for disengaging its hooked end from the ear to permit the same to be thrown into a vertical position to serve as a support for the nozzle.
3. In a spray nozzle, the combination with the body thereof, of a spray plate for adjustment to vary the stream issuing there from, a depending ear connected to said spray plate, and a lever rod associated with said ear and adapted to move into horizontal and vertical positions relative to the nozzle body, said lever rod when in one of said positions providing means for shifting the position of the spray plate relative to the nozzle and when in the other of said positions providing a support for said nozzle.
the body thereof, of a spray plate for adjustment to vary the stream issuing from 4. In a spray nozzle, the combination with the nozzle, a lever rod associated with the as plate carried by the spray plate to which theclamp band is attached, an ear depending from the base plate and provided with a plurality of openings, a lever rod longitudinally movable within one of said openings, and a hooked end to said lever rod for engaging with the opposite opening of the depending ear, the said lever rod being free to be swung into a horizontal or a vertical po sition relative to the body of the nozzle for the purposes described and being provided with widened portions to prevent the same being detached from the said ear.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH MGBOYLE.
