ABEL GOMBS, OF BURLINGAME, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERS FOR WATCH-FRAMES;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,571, dated January 9, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Dust-Excluders from Watches, invented by ABEL COMES, of Burlingame, in the county of Orange and State of Kansas.
The invention consists in a hinged plate for excluding dust, constructed as hereinafter fully described, and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of drawing is a plan view ofa watch with my improved dust-plate attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the drawing, K represents the dust-excluder, of which i and k are two half -circular disks, hinged together diametrically and secured by screws L which are applied through plate k. This allows the plate to be swung open, in order to afford access to the regulators.
This plate, it will be observed, is not arranged as a common hinged cap to a case, and intended in place of a common cover, but constitutes a part of the watch movement, and its especial object is to exclude air, light, and dust from the oil in the pivot-holes of the plates. It also serves to carry the pivot or arbor of the winding-barrel, which can be let into this plate, and entirely through the under plate, without exposure to the breath when the cap of the case is lifted and the watch being examined. \Vith this plate the movement can be looked at by inserting a glass over the balance, and dirt or spittle injected without any injury thereto.
This dust-plate is more 'iarticularlyintended for a three-quarter plate movement, and combines all of its advantages, with the added advantage of protecting the balance and the whole movement.
The plate is hinged to permit the removal of the escapement, exposing the whole machinery.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I esteem to be new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The dust-excluder K, formed in two parts, 2 7c, and hinged together, as and for the purpose specified.
