To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, LOUIS ROSENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Mail-Asserting Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, uch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved apparatus, in which mail of various postoffices may be assorted.

At present, sacks of mail are emptied on a table, after which, the mail matter as it is assorted is deposited or thrown into various sacks. With this method a rack is provided, which consists of a plurality of rectangular frames, each frame supporting a sack. When a sack becomes filled, it is removed, to make room for another empty sack. Therefore, it is evident, that while the filled and empty sacks are being interchanged, the assorting of mail is being materially delayed or interrupted.

Therefore, it is the aim of this invention to provide an apparatus for expediting or facilitating the assorting of mail matter, and to provide an improved device, whereby the assorting of mail matter can be continuous and without interruption.

Another object of the invention is to provide a frame provided with a plurality of compartments, which have closure controlled outlets upon two of the sides of the frame, through which access may be had to the mail matter, as it is assorted into the various compartments, without causing any interruption or delay of the work of the assorter.

In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved frame or casing with the plurality of compartments.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the casing or frame, which may be any suitable contour or configuration, and secured to one end of this casing or frame, is a shelf or table 2 having a flange 8, and supported by the brace The frame or casing is provided with a plurality of compartments a, 9 67 (Z: 7/ 79; ILA: 7 5$ 7.; z and a. )ne side of the casing or frame has a plurality of openings 5 adjacent its upper portion, and through which opening access may be had to the compartments a to c inclusive, there being closures 6 having spring tensioned hinge connections 7 to the side of the casing or frame. Observing Fig. 3 it will be seen that the compartments 7, g, h, 70, and m have their lower portions curved at 8, and merging into substantially horizontally disposed chutes 9, which extend under the compartments a to e inclusive, there being closures 10, which may be opened, so that a mail clerk may gain access to the mail matter in the chutes 9, and which may also be accompl shed by opening the closure 6 to remove the mail matter in the compartments (0 to c inclusive, without any interruption or delay in the assorting of mail matter. The closures 10 have spring tensioned hinge connections 11 similar to the connections 7. It will be observed that access is gained to the chutes 9 and the compartments (4 to e inclusive upon the left side of the casing or frame, the chutes 9 extending toward the left and under the compartments a to e inclusive. The compartments 9%, 79, Q, r, s, u, er, .r, z and a are similarly arranged to the compartments a to m inclusive, with the exception that the chutes 12 from the compartments a to s inclusive extend to the right and under the compartments u to a inclusive, in view of which access may be had to such compartments or chutes and the compartments 2! to a inclusive from the right side of the frame or casing. The closures to the compartments u to a inclusive and the chutes 12 are similar to the closures 6 and 10, therefore are designated by similar reference characters. It is to be noted that the bottoms of the chutes 9 and 12 are inclined as shown at 13, to cause the mail matter to slide as near as possible to the outlet openings. The bottoms 14 of the compartments a to e inclusive, and u to a are also slightly inclined to cause the mail matter to slide adjacent the outlets thereof.

In assorting mail matter to this improved apparatus, the bag of mail is emptied upon the shelf or table 2, the flange 3 assisting in preventing the mail matter from spilling off the edges of the shelf, and it is to be remembered that mail matter addressed to a certain location is deposited into one oompartment, and the mail matter addressed to another location is deposited in another compartment, and so on, until the mail matter is completely assorted, and as the compartments become filled, another clerk may easily remove the excess mail matter.

The invention having been set forth, What is claimed as new and useful is An apparatus in which package mail matter may be assorted, comprising a frame rectangular in plan, side and end vieWs,said frame having a plurality of compartments arranged in four parallel roWs, each compartment terminating in a correspondingly shaped inlet opening flush With the upper surface of the frame, said compartments being arranged in two outside rows adjacent the sides of the frame, and tWo intermediate rows, the Walls of the compartments of the outside rows being fixed, the intermediate compartments being L-shaped and extending in lateral opposite directions and under the compartments of the outside rows, the Wall between the two intermediate rows of compartments branching into forks in cross section extending laterally in opposite directions forming the bottoms of said intermediate compartments, said intermediate and outside rows of compartments terminating in outlet openings formed in the opposite sides of the frame, whereby access may be had to said compartments, and a closure for each of said outlet openings.
