IMPROVEMENT IN MODE OF SLINGING KNAPSACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,522, dated January 9, 1872; antedated December 30, 1871.
SPECIFICATION.
LWILLIAM HOFFMAN, ofthe United States Army, have invented certain Improvements in the Mode of Slinging or Suspending Soldiers Knapsacks, oi' which the following is a specication Nature and Object of the Invention.
My invention relates to the combination of a metallic breastiband curved outwardly from the body with the straps ordinarily used for slin ging knapsacks in such a manner as to snpport and secure the knapsack in its 'proper place; the object ot' my invention being to relieve the body from pressure by the breastband at any other point than the two ends where the stra-ps are attached to it, thus avoidingI a compression oi' the chest and the difcult-y of breathing which would follow from it, while, at the saine time, the breast-band prevents the straps from cutting or pressing on the hollow of the shoulder or under the arin and thereby restraining the free use of the arm. The suspending-straps from the top and bottom ofthe knapsack are united to the ends of the breast-band by means of suitable buttons riveted to the band, the straps having corresponding button-holes cut in the leather or metallic ends.
