PAWL-LOCKING MECHANISM FOR PAWL-CARRYING LEVERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY JosnPrIsoN, a citizenof the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pawl- Locking Mechanism for Pawl-Carrying Levers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pawl-locking means for pawl-carrying levers, and pertains more especially to the combination, with a lever, a stationary segmental rack arranged concentrically relative to the axis of the lever at one side of the lever, a rod arranged longitudinally and shiftable endwise of the lever and provided at one end with a pawl adapted to engage an interdental space of the rack in one position of the rod, and a spring acting to retain said rod in said position and arranged to be placed under tension during the actuation of the rod to remove the pawl from said space, of means for locking said rod, and consequently the pawl, upon said actuation of the rod.
One object of this invention is to have said pawl-locking means conveniently accessible at the handle-forming end-portion of the lever without being in the way of the hand employed in grasping said portion of the lever.
Another object is to have said locking means simple and durable in construction, and reliable in operation.
With these objects in View, and to the end of attaining any other advantage hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations and relative arrangement of parts, hereinafter described in this specification, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Portions are broken away in the drawings to reduce their size.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in central section, of a pawl-carrying lever provided with pawl-locking means embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view largely corresponding with Fig. 1, but in Fig. 2 the pawl carried by the lever is shown out of engagement with the rack and a bolt, which is employed in looking said pawl in its rack-disengaging position, is shown in its operative position, whereas in Fig. l the pawl is shown in its rack-engaging position and said bolt is shown held in its inoperative position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken along the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken along the line l4:, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken along the line 55, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken along the line 66, Fig. 2. Portions are broken away in the drawings to reduce their size.
In said drawings, A indicates a stationary supporting member, and B indicates an upright lever shown fulcrumed horizontally, as at b, to said supporting member. Said lever is shown extending somewhat below said supporting member and operatively connected at its lower end with a rod C for transmitting motion from the lever.
A segmental rack D is mounted on and secured to the supporting member A. and arranged at one side of the lower portion of the lever B adjacent and concentrically relative to the fulcrum or axis of the lever and has ratchet-teeth d arranged at its under side.
A rod E is arranged internally and longitudinally and shiftable endwise of the lever B and provided at its lower end with a pawl-forming lug or tooth e which engages an interdental space of and is in contact with the rack in the upper position of the rod, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The lever B is largely hollow and contoured internally in any approved manner to form guiding members 8 for the lower end-portion of the rod and to form an upwardly facing shoulder 10 internally of the upper portion of the lever at a point spaced downwardly from the upper extremity of the le ver. The rod E extends above the shoulder 10. A suitable distance above said shoulder said rod is provided with a head 12 which is preferably composed of a single metal piece provided at its lower end and centrally with a screw-threaded aperture 18 at which said piece is screwed onto the correspondingly screw-threaded upper end of the section forming the remainder of said rod, and a spiral spring F is coiled around said rod and confined between said head and the shoulder 10 and acts to retain said rod in its upper position. Said spring is consequently arranged to be placed under tension during the actuation of the rod E in the direction required to lower or remove the pawl e from the pawl-engaging interdental space, and in Figs. 2 and at said rod is lowered against the action of said spring far enough to remove said pawl from said space.
The head 12 is exposed at the upper extremity of the lever and consequently exteriorly of the lever, and preferably said head extends far enough upwardly to project somewhat above said extremity of the lever in the lower or inner position of the rod, as shown in Fig. 2. The head 12 is provided with a slot 14: which extends transversely of and through the head and is enlarged laterally, as at 15, at the upper extremity of one end of the slot.
An endwise shiftable bolt is arranged substantially at a right angle to the rod E and has its body G extending through an aperture 16 which is formed in one side of the lever and extends from one end of the slot 14 to the exterior of the lever. Said body of the bolt is therefore seated in the lever and abuts at its inner end against the head 12 at the exterior of said head in the outer and inoperative position of the bolt and, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the bolt is in its inoperative position in the upper position of the rod E. Figs. 1 and 5 show the bolt held in its inoperative position by the head 12 against the action of a spiral spring H which is coiled around an outwardly projecting stem 9 which the body G of the bolt is provided centrally of its outer end. The stem 5/ extends loosely into and is seated within a lug 18 formed internally of a bracket 19 which is suitably fitted to the rod-containing portion of the lever. The bracket 19 not only participates in supporting the bolt but is contoured externally as required to participate in the formation of a convenient handle for the lever. The spiral spring H is confined between the lug 18 and the outer end of the body of the bolt. Preferably the bolt-supporting bracket 19 is secured removably at its lower end by a suitably applied screw 20 to the rod-containing portion of the lever, and said bracket is shown provided at its upper end with an ear 21 which is seated on an upwardly facing shoulder 22 formed on the rod-containing portion of the lever at the upper end of the lever, and said ear surrounds said portion of the lever above said shoulder.
The enlargement 15 of the slot 14: is large enough in dimensions and arranged as required to receive the inner endportion of the body G of the bolt upon depressing the rod E, by pressure applied downwardly against the upper end of the head 12 of the rod, far enough to bring said enlargement of said slot into line with the body of the bolt. The relative arrangement of the parts is such that the enlargement 15 of the slot registers with the aperture 16 in the lever when the rod E has been depressed far enough to disengage its pawl e from the rack D against the action of the spring F, as shown in Fig. 2, and the bolt is actuated endwise by the spring H in the direction required to bring its body G into engagement with said enlargement of the slot immediately upon the actuating of the rod into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 6. Obviously the body of the bolt, by its engagement with the enlargement of the slot in the lower position of the rod E, locks the rod in said position, and the spring H constitutes means acting to retain the bolt in its locking position.
Means for actuating the bolt from its locking into its inoperative position are provided and preferably comprise a rigid stem 2 1 with which the body of the bolt is provided at its forward or inner end, which stem extends through the slot 14 and loosely through an aperture 26 formed in the lever B and arranged in line with the aperture 16. The stem 24; is provided at its outer end externally of the lever with a button 27 which is provided centrally with a screwthreaded aperture 28 and is screwed at said aperture onto the correspondingly screwthreaded outer end of said stem. The boltstem 24 is of course lon enough to cause it to extend to the exterlor of the lever in either position of the bolt.
I would here remark that the rack D and the pawl e of course have such relative arrangement that the pawl 6, when the rod E is in the position shown in Fig. 1, is adapted to ride over teeth (Z of the rack against the action of the spring F during the actuation of the lever B in the direction indicated by the arrow 30, Fig. 1, and locks said lever against being actuated in the opposite direction. When, however, it is desired to render said lever free to be actuated in opposite directions alternately the rod E is actuated endwise toward the axis of the lever B, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to disengage the pawl from the rack, and locked in its rack-disengaging position by my improved locking mechanism until the pawl.

What I claim is 1. The combination, with a suitably supported lever, a suitably applied rack, a rod arranged longitudinally and shiftable end wise of the lever and provided at one end with a pawl which engages the rack in one position of the rod, and a spring acting to netaini said rod in said position, said rod being provided at its other end with a head which is exposed exteriorly of the lever and has a lateral slot enlarged at one end, of a suitably supported endwise shiftable bolt arranged at an angle to said rod and having its body abutting against said head at one side of the head and inoperative in the aforesaid position of the rod, said body being arranged to engage the enlargement of the slot and thereby lock the rod upon the actuation of the rod in the direction required to disengage the pawl from the rack, and a spring acting to retain the bolt in its locking position.
2. The combination, with a lever, a rack, a rod arranged longitudinally and shiftable endwise of the lever and provided at one end with a pawl which engages the rack in one position of the rod, and means acting to retain said rod in said position, said rod being provided at its other end with a head which is exposed exteriorly of the lever and has a slot extending laterally through the head and enlarged at one end, of an endWise shiftable bolt arranged at an angle to the rod and having its boc y abutting against said head at one side of the head and in0p erative in the aforesaid position of the rod, said body being arranged to engage the enlargement of the slot and thereby lock the rod upon the actuation of the rod in the direction required to disengage the pawl from the rack, and means acting to retain the bolt in its locking position, said bolt having neans for actuating the bolt from its locking position into its inoperative position.
3. The combination, with a suitably supported lever, a suitably supported rack, a. rod arranged internally and longitudinally and shiftable endwise of the lever and pro vided at one end with a pawl which engages the rack in one position of the rod, and a spring acting to retain said rod in said position, said rod being provided at its other end with a head which is exposed exteriorly of the lever and provided with a slot extending laterally through the head and having a lateral enlargement at one end of the slot, of a suitably supported endwise shiftable belt arranged at an angle to said rod and having its body abutting against said head at one side of the head and inoperative in the aforesaid position of the rod, said body being arranged to engage the enlargement of the slot and thereby lock the rod upon the actuation of the rod in the direction required to disengage the pawl from the rack, and a spring acting to retain the bolt in its looking position, said bolt having means instrumental in actuating the bolt from its locking position into its inoperative position.

The combination, with a suitably sup ported upright lever, a suitably applied segmental rack arranged at one side of the lower portion of said lever and havin its teeth arranged at its under side, a rod arranged internally and longitudinally and shift-able endwise oi the lever and provided at its lower end with a pawl which engages the rack in the upper position of the rod, and a spring acting to retain said rod in said position, said rod being provided at its upper end with a head which is exposed at the upper extremity of the lever and provided with a slot extending laterally through the head and having a lateral enlargement at the upper extremity of one end of the slot, of a suitably supported endwise shii table bolt arranged substantially at a right angle to said rod and having a body abutting against the aforesaid head at one side of the head in the upper position of the rod, said body being arranged to engage the enlargement of the slot and thereby look the rod in the lower position of the rod, a spring acting to retain the bolt in its looking position, and means instrumental in actuating the bolt from its looking into its inoperative position.
5. The combination, with a suitably supported lever, a suitably applied segmental rack, a rod arranged longitudinally and shiftable endwise of the lever and provided at one end with a pawl which engages the rack in one position of the rod, and a spring acting to retain said rod in said position, said rod being provided at its other end with a head which is exposed at the exterior of the lever and provided with a slot extending laterally through the head and having a lateral enlargement at one end of the slot, of a suitably supported endwise shiitable bolt arranged substantially at a right angle to said rod and having a body abutting against the aforesaid head at one side of the head in the aforesaid position of the rod, said body being arranged to engage the enlargement of the slot and thereby lock the rod upon the actuation of the rod in the direction required to disengage the pawl from the rack, and a spring acting to retain the bolt in its locking position, the body of the bolt having a Stem which extends through the slot and externally of the lever in either position of the bolt.
6. The combination, with a suitably supported lever, a suitably applied rack, a rod arranged longitudinally and shiftable endwise of the lever and provided at one end with a pawl which engages the rack in one position of the rod, and a spring acting to retain said rod in said position, said rod be ing provided with a head which is exposed exteriorly of the lever and has a slot extending laterally through the head and enlarged laterally at one end of the slot, of an endwise shiftable bolt arranged substantially at an angle to said rod and having a body abutting in the inoperative position of the bolt against the aforesaid head at one side of the head and being arranged to engage the enlargement of the slot upon the actuation of the rod in the direction required to disengage the pawl from the rack, said body having means instrumental in actuating the bolt from its looking into its inoperative position and provided at its outer end with an In testimony whereof, I sign the foregooutwardly extending stem, a spiral spring lng speclficatlon, 1n the presence oi two wlt- 1n c011ed. around the last-mentioned stem and nesses.
