- Said invention consists in closing the valve or stopper of each nozzle down upon its seat, and before the tap or nozzle is soldered over theappropriate opening in the vessel to which it is to be applied, covering the bottom or under side of the joint of the valve or stopper and its seat with a film of glue collodiou, shellac, or other equivalent tough, tenacious substance, insoluble in the liquid to be transported, and which may be broken or torn away by an ordinary movement of the valve or stopper, but will remain intact under all other ordinary influences.

Description
thereof, of which the following is a specification JABEZ A. BosTwIoK,
PATENT FFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN SEALING THE NOZZLES OF OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,512, dated January 9, 1872.
Srncmrcnrrou.
I, JABEZ A. BOSTWIOK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an improvement in the art of hermetically sealing vessels which are closed Joy valve-taps or nozzles to facilitate a discharge of the contents My said invention relates to the hermetically sealing of taps and nozzles for oil-cans in such manner as that although the tap or nozzle, when properly secured in place, shall close the opening in the vessel air-tight, yet the ordinary movement of the valve or stopper of the tap or nozzle so sealed, to open the same, will, in itself, suffice to break the seal. Said invention consists in closing the valve or stopper of each nozzle down upon its seat, and before the tap or nozzle is soldered over theappropriate opening in the vessel to which it is to be applied, covering the bottom or under side of the joint of the valve or stopper and its seat with a film of glue collodiou, shellac, or other equivalent tough, tenacious substance, insoluble in the liquid to be transported, and which may be broken or torn away by an ordinary movement of the valve or stopper, but will remain intact under all other ordinary influences.
My invention isapplicahle' to all ordinary forms of taps and nozzles which are opened and closed by valves or stoppers, but especially to the improved nozzles forming the subject of the Letters Patent of the United States issued to me, and hearing date March 21st,1871. After the nozzles have been properly finished the valve in each is screwed down upon its seat in the base of the nozzle, and a solution of glue or its equivalent is applied to its joint upon the under side. So soon as the film of the glue has hardened the valve and nozzle are thereby very eflectually hermetically sealed, and, when soldered in this condition over the mouth or dischargeopeniu g of the can in the customary manner, serve to close the same hermetically. As the sealing film is upon the under side of the tap or nozzle it is completelyprotected from exposure to any accidental blows or influences which might tend to break the same; and, as it simply covers the joint of the valve without entering the same, it. may be readily broken by a proper movement of the valve, although, because of the extent of surface upon which it is secured, it will present very efl'ectual resistance to any accidental agency tending to its .fracture, displacement, or removal.
1 claim as my invention- A film of glue, collodion, shellac or other tough tenacious substance, applied to and combined with the joint of the valve or stopper in a tap or nozzle or cap for oil-cans and other vessels, to hermetically seal the same, substantially as herein set forth.
