Blackboard Rubber.
' No.122,511 l Patentedlamgnn.-
UNITED STATES JAMES F. BIGGER AND WILLIAM A. PUGH, OF RUSHVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKBOARD RUBBERS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 122,511, dated January 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, JAMES F. BIGGER and WILLIAM A. PUGH, of Rushville, in the county of Rush and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blackboard Rubbers; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specilication, in whichv Figure l is a bottom view of the device, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View ofthe same.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in rubbers for blackboards, and consists of a rubber in combination with a box, the two being constructed and arranged to operate in such a manner that the chalk-dust, as it is wiped from the face ofthe blackboard by the rubber, will be caught and retained in the box until voluntarily removed therefrom; the object of the invention being to prevent the chalk-dust from getting into the hair, soiling the clothes, or being inhaled into the lungs of pupils or other persons in school-rooms or other rooms in which blackboards are used.
In the drawing, A Ais a box, the bottom of which is square, as seen in Fig. l, and the sides beveled, as in Fig. 2. a b and c cl are two rollers let into the bottom of the box A at opposite sides or ends for lessening the friction ofthe rubber when in operation upon the face of the blackboard. h h is an upright tube, in which the slide j', operated by the helical spring. g, is placed. To one end of the slide j is secured a table or platform, e e, upon which is fastened, in any suitable manner, a piece of unshorn sheep-skin, B, the woolly side being out. 12 lc is the handle of the rubber.
To operate the device, grasp the handle i la and move the rubber back and forth upon the face of the blackboard. In this operation the rubber B is kept in contact with the face of 4 the blackboard by the constantly gentle pressure of the spring g upon the slide j'. The effect of operating the device in this manner is to rem ove the chalk-dust from the blackboard, catch and retain it in the box A A, thereby preventing it from getting into the hair. soiling the clothes, or being inhaled into the lungs. When the chalk-dust accumulates in the box A A .to such an extent as to hinder the operation ofthe device it maybe removed through the opening l, which. should be closed when the device is in operation.
.Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
The combination ofthe boxA A and rubber B, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as ours we have hereto s'et our hands this 1st day of April, 1871.
