To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTON SUELFLUHN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee. in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lavatory- Bowls; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. I

My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical and sanitary lavatory bowl, the construction and arrangement being such that overflow due to any cause is eliminated by the application of an outer shell constituting a trap for the bowl proper, the top surface of which shell is upon a higher plane than the corresponding surface of the bowl, wherebyany overflow shell or trap and discharged by suitable pipe fittings into the waste pipe.

As an exemplification ofmy invention I have shown a bowl constructed of porcelain and of the standard type having the outer shell made an integral part thereof and conforming to the contour of the bowl pro-per, but it is understood that, in some instances, this outer shell may be a separate member if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as set forth hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing and subsequently claimed.

The drawing illustrates a sectional elevation of a lavatory embodying the features of my invention.

Referring by characters to the drawing. 1 represents the bowl proper having a horizontal upper edge 2 and a front upper edge or surface 2 that is upon a higher plane than the major portion of the bowl edge. The bowl shown is of a standard type and is provided'with a flushing ring 3 which communicates with a flush pipe 3 bowl and conforms to its general contourv and the bottom or discharge mouth of the bowl 4;

. but is spaced therefrom. with the exception that at the rear portion the shell in shape develops a contracted throat 7 that is provided with a discharge coupling 8 which may be suitably connected to the waste pipe. The coupling 8 terminates with a valve seat and is controlled by a valve 8, which. in this instance, is suspended from a float lever 9. \Vhen waste water or overflow accumulates in the chamber formed between the bowl proper and the shell. it is manifestthat the float 9 will rise and open the valve, whereby communication is established between the jacket and waste pipe to permit water trapped therein to be discharged. The upper edge or top surface (3 of the shell body is upon the same approximate horizontal plane as the high portioii 2 of the bowl proper. and this high or upstandin iortion '2' of the bowl is n'imarilv for the purpose of serving as a shield but also in this case serves as a rest for the hinged cover 10.

1 From the foregoing description it is obvious that when the lavatory bowl fills to the plane of the major part of its upper surface 2 it would overflow into the shell chamber and from this shell chamber the waste water will be discharged into the sewer or waste pipe. The valve 8' prevents any possible esapc of gas from the waste pipe connections, but it is understood that any suitable trap may be utilized in connection with the overflow shell in place of the float valve.

VVhile I have shown the bowl and overflow shell preferably molded together, it is obvious that, in some instances. they may be separate and thereafter assembled. with out departing from the spirit of my invention. I also do not wish to be confined to any material or structural features shown in the cxempliiication of my invention as they may be varied indefinitely.

A device of thmclass described comprising a bowl having its front upper edge disposed in a plane above that of the main portion of said edge. a shell incasing the bowl and spaced from the wall thereof,

whereby to form an overflow chamber, the

top of said chamber being open, the rear portion of said chamber being enlarged and having an outlet, the upper edge of said shell being in the same substantially horizontal plane and coincident with the plane of the front upper edge of the bowl, a float operated valve in the outlet from said chamber, and a cover hinged to the shell and closing the open top of the chamber, said cover norinallx resting on the front upper edge of the bowl and the upper edge Goplen of this patent may be obtained for five centa each, 11)
