JOLLAPSIBLE CASE.
Application `ied November 22, 1915.
Be it known that l, 'lnoMAs lnmsLicx', a eitizen oi ('anada, residing at North Vaneouier, in the lroviiiee olE British Columbia and Dominion oll (`:i.nada, haie invented ,new and lisel'ul linpri'ivenients in (lollapsible (fases, olI whieh the following is a specilieation.
',l`liis invention relates to folding boxes and has l'or its primary objeet tosimpliiy generally the eonsiruelion oi' foldable structures.
Vl'urllier objee( ol' lhe invention is to provide a folding box eapable of being ipiii'kly and easily assembled 'l'or use. and whieh. when in sel up position, pro\'ides\a niaxiniuni amount ol' spare in whieli goods may be parked l'or shipment or storage, and yet wliieli, when not iii use, may be eollapsed lo oeeupy but little rooni.

The material of which these. sections are eonstriicted may he of metal, wood` or ot' sueli other material as may be desired or necessary, depending upon the uses for which the box is designed,
.but for most purposes wood will be found most practicable.
Specification of Letters Patent.
li'l'a'tented lilay t, MMVI?.
Serial No. 62,900.
'l`o one edge oi' the bottom 5 is hingedly eonneeted the side T, in such manner that when properly folded at right :ingles to the bottoni, the adjaeent edge ol the side 7 `vill rest iipon the bottoni with the outer surface of (he side flush with the lateralv edge ot" the said bottoni.
The opposite side section tu is in a like nianner eonneeied to the bottoni ."3 adjacent vthe o i iosite lateral edffetheriaif exee )tin i" that the hinge members are for a pnrifiose to be more fully detailed. arranged iipon the inner faees ot' the side and liottoin.
The top (3 is liingedly eonnefted to the upper edge o't' tlieside sei'iion 7, to overlie the salueI and to ini-lose or eoi'er the eoi'responding edge ot the opposite side seetion F5. while the ends are similarly hinged adjaeent one edge to the opposite ends oli the side seetion 8. eaeli being of suoli dimensions as will perniit of their edges heilig eoif'ered or inelosed by the, ext-reine ends of the bottoni. sides and top sections.
The hinges employed in the eoi'istruetion ot' iuy improved box are so arranged as to permit of eonsiderable l'lexihiiity ot the 'Varionsl seetions with respect to eaeh otherV in order to enable the saine to be properly arranged in set. up or knock down positions, and to thisend, leaves or straps il and 12 are seeured iipon the snrt'aee ot' the rai-ions seetions and are eonneeted through loops or soekets .13 toi-ined or provided thereon with links 1'l. The straps on some ot" said sections are positioned with their loops slightly protruding beyond the edges thereot', while the strap or leat' on the adjacent seetion is spaced inwardly iti-oni the extreme edge and it will he observed Yfrom this eonstruction that eonsideralglle play between the seotions is perniitted to allow the treo movenient of the various sections For commet arrangement ot' parts when the hor. is in knock down position. The side section 8 hingedly eonneeted with the, bottoni 5 iipon the interior surfaces of both Seetiens 'in order lo permit o'l the said side folding if, ii'ardly upon the bottoni when ,zollapsing.
`For securing the sections iiiositively in set np position, eaeh end of the hoi` is plo vided with a stein or shank i5 protruding slightly beyond the edge thereof and adapt ed to extend through an opening 16 provided in the surface of the adjaenthon seeton. The stern or shank may loe threaded as shown for thereception of a mit l? for sections in any preferred manner.
securely holding the sections together.
gEach end is preferably provided with two of 4an opening or aperture formed in the adjacent surfaee of the top 6. This construction obviously permits of the various box sections being securely held together.
Each of the bottom, top, and side sections is provided with aY transversely extending brace member 1S, the said members being secured to the outer surface of each of sald The brace members are arranged preferably one near each end of the .respective sections, and for the purpose of relieving the box of strains due to rough handling of the same, the said braces are positioned to providey a continuous brace extending around the box with their ends in engagement with each other. The brace membersion the sides 7 and S are a trifle longer than the width `of thev latter, and protrude at each end beyond the lateral edges of the said sections-a distance equal to the thickness of the top and bottom and the braces 18 secured thereon. The braces on the top and bottom sections are coextensive with the width of those sections, and when the box is in set up or assembled position it is obvious that the ends of the various braces will abut. In this manner the box sections will be relieved of strainswhen the box is roughly handled as the braces `form a continuous band around the box. The arrangement also obviates injurious twisting action upon the box.
lpon properly arranging the various sections of the bor, the nuts 17 may be applied to the various protruding stems 15, whereupon a rigidstructure is provided. When 1t is desired to collapse or fold the box to occupy small. space the nuts may be quickly removed and the side 8 folded inwardly upon the bottom, the ends 9 and 10 are then folded inwardly Yupon the side 8, and the top 6 backwardly upon the side and the latter then folded under upon the bottom 5. The box is then in compact form and may be stored or packed in but a small may be manufactured at but small cost, and
can be assembled and collapsed by anyone and without the use of special instruments. It is obvious also that the uses to which the box may be adapted are numerous, and While in the present instance I have illustrated and described what appears to me 'to be the most practical form of the box, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the construction set forth, but may -make such minor changes in the arrange4 ment of the various parts as I may deem necessary without departingfrom the spirit of my claim.
Having described claimed is z-f A foldable box or 'the like embodying a bottom, side walls hingedly connected thereto, end walls hingedly connected to one of said side walls7 a top hingedly connected to the other of Said sidewalls, spaced transversely disposed reinforcing elements secured to each ,of the side walls,"said reinforcing elements projecting abone and below the upper and llower edges of said walls and having their lower extremities en gaging the opposed longitudinal edges of the bottom, and said top when in position being arranged between the upper extremities of said reinforcing elements, threaded bolts secured to the ends ofthe box, the bolts on ea'ch end being arranged in right angular relation and extending beyond two adjacent edges thereof to project through openings in one side and the top of the box, and nutsy on said bolts for holding the component parts of the box in assembled position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
