INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTO R N EY JOHN KLASNICH, F UNIVERSAL, INDIAN.&.

' Application filed December which the following is a specification.
position or V a completely This invention relatesto builders hardware, and more especially to door springs;
and the object of the same is to produce a lever attachment connecting a lunged door with its frame and includincgl a spring, all parts being so constructed an disposed that the'device will swing the door to a closed opened position at the will of the user. '1
To this end the invention consists in a door spring structure of this character such as is more fully described andclaimed below and as shown in the accompanying drawing. wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of a door equipped withthis spring actuator, viewing the lattera little from the under side of the bracket on which it is supported, the door in this instance being closed.
4 Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the door -b actuating mechanism, showing the frame and door in dotted lines only and with the latter about half way open.
In the drawings is shown a door D hinged at H within a frame F, as usual,.thedoor being of that class which closes flat into the frame rather than swinging therethrough.
My improved door spring or actuator comprises a bracket 1 substantially L-shaped in edge view and with its upright leaf secured, as at 2, to the door frame and its suitable manner to the door horizontal leaf outstanding from the frame above the hinge line of the door. Carried by'the latter is a guide 3, secured in any at a point remote from its hinge. line'- and preferably extending above its upper edge and there provided with an eye 4c. The numeral 5 designates a link pivoted at its outer end a point which-isdi rectly opposite the hinge line, but forward of it a slight distance, and pivoted at? to the inner end of the the inner end ofa rod 8 which extends .from this point through the eye 4 of theguide 3. On this i rod at about its mid length is fixed a collar 9, and coiled on the rod between this collar and the guide an expansive spring '10. The'link, therefore, indirectly pivotally Specification of Letters Patent.
connectsthe inner end of the rod with the' bracket, and one function of said link is to prevent the rod from binding within the eye of the-guide as the door swings to and fro, the link permitting a certain movement of the inner'end of the rod so that its axis may always be coincident with that of said eye.
With this construction, as the door is swung open from the position shown in Fig. 1 toward that shown in Fig. 2, the gulde causes the rod to turn with it, and the rear end of the rod by reason of its pivotal attachment to the link causes the link also to turn with it, but the link swings around the pivot 6, whereas the door swings around the hinges which are not in line with said pivot, and the result is that the guide is traveling through an are having a diflerentinscribed by any point in radius from that Y the rod, as for instance, its collar. Hence the spring 10 is put under ressure which increases as the door swings alf way open, be 0nd which a reversal of the operation ta es lace and the spring may expand. There ore, the operator may open this door y grasping a knob and drawing it toward until the door has passed a position half way open, and then he can move the door a little farther and release it, and my improved spring will cause it to swing completely open and hold it there. So also 'm closing the door he can swing ita little more than half way shut and release it, and the spring actuator will close it completely and hold it there, whether there is a latch ''used as not. The parts are of any desired shape, sizes or proportions, and changes in details may be made Within the scope of the appended claims. eans may be provided whereby the door will be cushioned in reaching either extreme of movement, opened or closed, and I have shown these means applied to Fig. 2 only, and therefore said view is to an extent a modification of what is shown in .Fi 1. I desire it understood that this mo cation or amplification may be used or not as desired. tached a stop, whichin the illustration is shown as a cotter 1-1 passing through said rod, although y suitahle form of stop applied to or-formed on the rod would -an swer hlextinside said stop. is located a cushioning spring 12 which is herein shown as a coil To the outer end of the rod is at-.
mend ng the rod and preferably that it does not contact with 'of somewhat less strength than the main spring 10; and a washer 13 may be interposed between the stop and the spring and possibly another washer 14 mounted slidably on the rod at the other end of the spring.
the rod through the guide will draw its stop toward the guide until, just before the door reaches its extreme position, the eushioning spring will be put under tension to prevent slamming of the door.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. The combination with a door hinged in its frame, and a guide on the door remote from its hinge line; of a link, means for The length of the latter is. such the guide pivotally supporting the outer end thereof at a point directly forward of the hinge line, a rod pivoted to the other end of the link and extending slidably through said guide, a collar on the rod, and an expansive spring between the collar and the guide.
2. In a door spring, the combination with a bracket adapted for attachment to the frame over the hinge line of the door, and
' a guide adapted for attachment to the door remote from the hinge line; of a rod slidably mounted through said guide, a link pivotally connected at one end with the rod and at the other end with the bracket, a collar on the rod between the bracket and guide, a stifi expansible spring between the collar and guide, a stop on the outer end of the rod, and a weak expansible. spring between said stop and guide.
In testimony whereof I aifilx my sig'na ture.
JOHN KLASNICH.
