Description

F. -C. HAMILTON.
Improvement in Seel Locks.
Patented Jan. 2. 1872.
: WH'NSSES. lNVENTOR.-
FRED C. HAMILTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB- TO AMERICAN SEAL- e LOOK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEAL-LOCKS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,459, dated January 2, 1872.
or analogous material, which must be broken before access can be had to the spring-catch to separate the parts.
The details 'of construction are hereinafter described.
In thedrawing, Figure' l is a perspective view ofthe lock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents a rigid cross-bar, formed at its ends with sockets a a! to receive the ends b b of the bow B. In the longer and larger end I) ofthe bow is formed a seat for the seal S,which,
when the parts are locked together, is exposed through an opening in the face of the bar, but cannot escape therethrough in a whole condition. The locking is effect-ed by the springcatch O, which may preferably consist of a pin pressed forward by a spring, D 5 but this form of catch is not new in itself, and I do not desire to limit myself to any special shape therefor. The said pin engages in a hole provided for it in the bow B in such position as to be covered by the seal S. The end B of the bow being elongated, as shown, may be provided with one or more additional openings below the cross-bar to receive lead seals T for additional security.
I apply the invention in locking the doors of a frei ght-car, for example, which is one use for which the invention is well adapted. The hasp ofthe door is passed over the staple in customary manner, and the bow B, with the seal S applied, is then passed through the staple and its ends are inserted in the sockets of the bar A, whereit is securely held bythe springcatch C. In order to release the parts it will now be needful to break the seal S, after which a pointed instrument is pressed upon the end of the catch O, forcingit back whilel the bow B is withdrawn.
I claim as my invention'- The seal-lock herein described, consisting of the bow B b b', cross-bar or socket piece A a a', and spring-catch O, all constructed and adapted for use in connection with a seal, S, of glass or analogous material, in the manner andfor the purposes specified. l
