DAMPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1917.
Application filed December 10, 1913, Serial No. 805,840. Renewed February 29, 1916. Serial No. 81,292.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD M. TYLER, of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dampers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates chiefly to a mechanism for operating dampers and my invention consists in an operating member adjustable so as to be as accessible as may be desired with reference to the fireplace openmg.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a fragment of a device embodying my invention Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a modification embodying my invention, the damper being closed;
Fig. 3 is a similar section but showing the damper open;
Fig. 4.: is another modification illustrating a damper pivoted at the front;
Fig. 5 is another modification illustrating a damper pivoted at the rear; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional detail enlarged.
In Fig. 1 the damper A is pivoted at a and is provided with lug a having threaded pin a which enters the slot a in member a and washer at and clamping nut a are provided, the latter engaging pin a to rigidly but adjustably connect the handle member a with the pin a the latter being rigidly connected to the damper.
In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 a frame is provided for supporting the damper and this frame comprises a rear wall A, end wall B, and front wall I), the latter being conveXed inwardly at its lower portion to get the best mingling of the air and products of combustion as they rise from the fire, it being understood that the fireplace opening is at the left of Fig. 1 and below wall I). On the frame is shelf .7) and eye Z2 The damper E has a roller 0 at its center and a roller 6 at one end, the latter being guided in slot 6 To the under side of damper E is affixed an eye 6 A member F is pivotally mounted on the eye 6 of the support, lip f entering said eye and shoulder f being provided to aid in the engagement between the eye 72 and the member F, the latter having an extended portion from which projects pin f which is relatively near shoulder f and also has arm P which enters the eye 6 on the damper E.
Member G has a curved slot 9 and a straight slot 9 and clamping nut g is prov ded to engage threaded pin f and thus rigidly clamp member G to member F, the slot providing for any desired adjustment.
Fig. 3 illustrates the damper E in its open position the roller 6 being supported on the shelf of Fig. 2. This damper is balanced in the closed position, in the open position as well as in any desired intermediate position.
In Fig. 4 I show my invention as applied to a damper H pivoted at hand in Fig. 5 I show my invention as applied to a damper K pivoted at is, this latter pivot being at the rear of the line as distinguished from the pivot h which is at the front of the flue. In Fig. 5 I show teeth 70 on the member F and cooperating with teeth 70 on the damper K in order to hold the damper in the desired open position.
There is oftentimes a great diversity of choice among users as to whether the operating member G shall bein a comparatively low and forward position so that it may be very easily reached by the hand for movement of the damper and my invention provides that a. single tool or element G may be used and this by reason that this member will allow for a great variety of adjustments so that if one desires that it be readily accessible he may adjust it for that position and if he desires that it be pushed back practically out of sight but in a less accessible position this may be accomplished by loosening the clamping nut and adjusting the pin in the slot 9 It will be observed that if desired the concave edge of member G may be at the bottom instead of at the top as shown in the figures and this will give an additional range of'adjustment in which the forward portion of member G will project downwardly opposite the fireplace opening to a greater degree than is shown in the drawings.
It will also be noted that pin f may ride in the curved slot 9, the member G being turned about for this purpose and this will result in giving a still further variation in the adjustments and consequently variation in the location of that portion of member G which is to be seized by the hand.
Although my invention is applicable to dampers mounted in a variety of ways yet it is particularly adapted for use with a damper having a mounting like that in Figs. 2 and 3, that is to say, in which the may be otherwise mounted than on said frame.
What I claim is: v
1. A device of the character described comprising a damper; and a handle operatively connected to the damper and adjustable for operative relation to the damper for any single position of the latter and mounted to swing on an axis substantially parallel to the front of the fireplace.
2. A device of the character described comprising a'damper; and a handle operatively connected to the damper and adjustable for operative relation to the damper for any single position of the latter and movable inwardly to operate the damper.
3. A device of the character described comprising a damper; and a handle operatively connected to the damper and adjustable for operative relation to the damper for any single position of the latter and movable inwardly as the damper is moved.
4. A device of the character described comprising a damper; and a handle operatively connected to the damper and adjustable for operative relation to the damper for any single position of the latter and movable inwardly as the damper is opened.
5. A device of the character described comprising a damper mounted to swing; a member mounted to swing on a fixed axis parallel to, but at a distance from, the axis of the damper and adapted to engage and operate a damper; and a second member having rigid but adjustable connection with the first member.
6. A device of the character described comprising a damper mounted to swing; a member mounted to swing on an axis parallel to the axis of the damper and adapted to slidingly engage the damper during operation and thereby operate the damper; and a second member having rigid but adjustable connection with the first member.
7. A device of the character described comprising a support; a member pivotally mounted on the support and adapted to directly engage and operate a damper and having movement with relation to the damper during operation; and a second member having rigid but adjustable connection with the first member and movable bodily when the first member moves.
8. A device of the character described comprising a damper mounted to swing; a member mounted to swing on a fixed axis parallel to, but at a distance from, the axis of the damper and adapted to engage and operate a damper; and a second member having rigid but adjustable connection with the first member, the free end of the second member moving inward in the fireplace opening as the damper is opened.
9. A device of the character described comprising a support; with an eye; a dam' per with an eye; a member having an opening to receive the eye of said support, said opening having a shoulder, said member having also a lip to enter said eye of the support, a pin in adjacency to said opening, and an arm to enter the eye on the damper; and a second member having a straight slotted portion and a curved slotted portion, each slotted portion being adapted to receive said pin; and means engaging said pinto clamp the second member rigidly to the first in the desired position of adjustment, the first member forming one jaw of the clamp.
10. A device of the character described comprising a support, a damper balanced on said support and adapted to swing and having its axis of rotation movable; a member movably mounted on the support to operate the damper; a second member; and means to connect the second member rigidly but adjustably to the first member.
