H. BRAMS'T'ED.
GATE LATC APPLICATION HLED JU ENFER@ STATES PATENT @FFllQE I-IYRUM BRAIVISTED, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, UTAH.
GATE-LATCH.
Application iiled .Tune 8, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HYRUM BRAMSTED, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Sanpete and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a gate latch and has for its principal object the production of a latch which Will automatically lock.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient ever ready and set latch.
lith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as Will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a front elevation of a fence, showing the device attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawing by numerals it Will be seen that l designates a post upon which is mounted the gate 2. This gate 2 is provided upon its outer end with the post 3. It will `be seen by referring especially to Fig. 4 that the post 3 is provided With the shoulders 4 and the neck 5.
Upon the post 3 is mounted the link 6 by means of the frame 7. It Will be seen that this frame 7 is provided With the elliptical clamping portion S. It also should be noticed that the link 6 is substantially elliptical in cross-section so that when the link is pivoting on the clamp 8 the lip 9 Will have a tendency to force the link into the post.
The shoulders 4 provided upon the post 3 will normally hold the link 6 in a horizontal position when the gate is open7 as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. When the gate is closed the link Will strike the guard 10 Which is carried upon the neck l1 Specification of Letters Patent.

carried by the post l2, so that the gate will be efliciently locked.
By referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the clamp S is substantially elliptical shape in cross section and that the pivot portion of the link 6 is also elliptical in cross section, whereby the clamp S Will snugly lit around the pivot portion so that when the link is pivoted, it will cause the clamp S to take an unnatural position Which will have a tendency to cause the link 6 to come back to its normal position. lt will also be noticed by referring to Fig. 2, that the neck portion 5 is made high enough so as to act as a stop for the link (i, whereby the same may not be raised approximately more than 45 degrecs from its normal horizontal position.
From the above description it will be noticed that when the post l2 is mounted upon the fence post llthat if the gate is in an open position and is then swung to a closed position that the link G will hit the neck ll thereby causing the link G to slide up the inclined surface 15 of the guard l0. lt will also be noted that a device has been formed comprising a link, which link has a portion substantially elliptical in cross-section adapted to fit in a substantially elliptical clamping socket whereby when the link is lifted toward a vertical position not only gravity Will be Working upon the same but also the lip 9 so as to force the link into a horizontal position.
that is claimed is ln a device of the class described, the combination of a V-shaped frame provided With an integral clamp upon its upper end, a link pivotally mounted Within said clamp,
'the pivot portion of said link being substantially elliptical shaped in cross-section, said clamp adapted to tit snugly about said pivot portion so as to normally hold said link in a horizontal position, said if-shaped frame adapted to be mounted upon a post, said post provided with a reduced neck, said neck adapted to be longer than said link, whereby said link may not gain a vertical position so that the same Will always return automatically to a horizontal position.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto aiiiX my signature.
HYRUM BRAMSTED.
