UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
HANS MIKOREY, F SCHfiNEBEBG, NEAR BERLIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO MINIMAX COMPANY, OF NEW YORK,
NEW YORK.
N. Y., A CORPORATION OF FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
Application filed November'i, 1910, Serial No. 591,186. Renewed October 8, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that illANS M IKOREY, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident oi Sohoneberg, near Berlin, Kingdom ol 5 Prussia, Germany, (whose post-office address is 13 WVartburgsti-asse, Scl'iiineberg, near Tierlin, Ii'ingdoin of Prussia, (Jrermany,) have invented certain new and useful I! [)l'UVGIl'lBIEl-S in Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a fire extinguisher for manual use, the handle of :which. secured to the container for the extinguishing fluid by means of an articu- 15 lated joint The essential feature of the invention consists in a part of said handle be ing made to serve as a part of the jet-pipe and connected with the outletfrom said container by means of flexible tube. This arrangr-unent has the purpose to allow of sending the stream of the extinguishing liquid in an upward or downward direction on the fire Without tilting the container. Corresjionding to the aforesaid construction and arrangement of the handle is also the arrangement for starting the extinguisher according to the present invention provided on the bottom of the same. Fire-extinguish ers are-already known, in which the arrangemerit for starting them is fitted to the bottom. of the container; in such extinguishers, however, the handle arranged in such a manner, that the container must be tilted both for directing the stream of liquid and for moving the extinguisher into the posi:
tion required, so that the pin or the like ernployed for starting the extinguisher can be strmr-lc agz'iinst the floor. The extinguisher according to the present invention may 40 therefore, utter haying been carried by the handle to the pla Where the lire'has broken out, be started there by simply, dumping it against the floor, without having to tilt it and the fi reoted at will upward or downward, also Without any tilting of the container.
The accompanying drawing exemplifies a constructional form of the. present inven- :tion. r 93 Figure 1- shows a ,side olevationaof the extinguisher, with n portion brokenaaw'ay,

stream of liquid may then be di- Patented May 1, 1917.
Serial No. 54,890.
liquid, 7)- is a handle attached to said container in known manner by means of an articulated joint or the like. This handle is of a horseshoe shape, and its handle-bar e is made tubular and is fitted With a jet-pipe g with a nozzle 7. In the interior of the container at an outlet-pipe cl is arranged extending to a suitable point of the bottom.
In the constructional form shown in the drawing the tube (Z is arranged to emerge from the container a, and is connected 1) means of a flexible tube /L with the tubular bar of the l'iundle, This flexible tube may also be used as a substitute for the joint (2 above mentioned. In. this event the said tube could be arranged between the tube d emerging at the center of the container head, and a passage in handle 1) leading to tube 9.
The gas-pressure for forcing the extinguishing liquid out of the container may be 5 produced in any suitable manner. If the gas pressure is who produced by chemical. means, the cage 6 or the like in which one or several cartridges are :11'- ranged containing chemicals and to be' opened in known manner by a percussion pin k or the like, preferably arranged in known manner at the bottom of container (1. By such arrangement it is possible to operate the extinguisher with one hand only and to keep it Working notwithstanding the direction of the stream of liquid being changed according to the requirements.
With this extinguisher it will'be possible to send. the stream of liquid. ina vertical direction cit-her upward or downward. The directing of the stream is .effected by means ofthe movements of the, handle, the container hanging always vertically he low the handle. As furthermore theflext' guisher can be operatediwith the arm oft operator hanging straight down, his ban will not be fatigued. r The handle 13 is preferably fitted with four feet 722-, and the joint 0, if any, is ar ranged so as to allow of being rigidly fixed, so that the extinguisher maylb an inverted position on said in; charging or filling}, Theextin also be permahently -keptin sue i r o s for the purpose ofayoidmg the liquid being forced out by enpansion of th'e' aiuor an 111 crease of the inner-pressure from other causes,'as the inlet cloning of the tube d will in such position e abovethe'lei'el of the liqui-dand the air, in the container is in I direct communication'with the atmosphere.
Iclaimz 1. In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a container, an outlet tube for discharging the liquid contents of said container, a handle, a tnbewithin the cross bar of this handle, a discharge nozzle connected to said handle tube, an articulated joint connecting the handle to the top of the said container, a flexible. tube connecting said handle tube to the outlet tube of the container, a closedv vessel containing and comprising means for the liberation of gas, and a device for opening said vessel and arranged at the bottom of the'container, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a container, an outlet tube for discharging the liquid contents of said container, a handle provided with feet, a joint connecting said handle with the top of said eontainer and allowing to be rigidly fixed, a tube Within the cross bar of the handle, a discharge nozzle connected to said handle tube, a flexible tube connecting said handle tube to the outlet of the container, and a device for opening said vessel and arranged at the bottom of the crmtainer, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
