Description

HEN RY sa. `xmloowlmil.'
Improvement in Car Straps.
NG CA mm? 376A? tren): s @n 'the PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY s. vRooMAN, on BoSToN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENTSIN CR-STRAPS.
Specification forming Ypart of Letters Patent No. 122,417, dated January 2, 1872.
To all whomjt may. concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. VRooMAN, of
` Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Car-Straps; and I do hereby declare that '4 thefollowing, taken in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms part upper part of a horse-car being shown in my said patent' as improved, by making it with a two-fold attachment to the rod, the two points of attachment lbeing at some distance apart, and the two parts ,of the strap crossing or uniting below, so as to form a loop or hand. hold at the bottom of the strap. Such straps have been found to be greatly. superior to the common loosely-swinging straps inthe firm support they give to a standing passenger as the car moves, andv when it suddenly Stops,
and also when the car is crowded, or passengers have to move by each other. or along the car, or have to stand erect while others crowd by them. i
My present improvement relates particularly tothe employment of my improved strap as a vehicle or holder for an advertising card, Vor.
for a frame or plate designed to carry such a card, the improvement also consisting in connectin g the two spreadin g branches of the strap (below the rod) at more than two points, so as to more effectually hold them in relative po Sition.
The drawing represents one of my patented straps embodying my present improvement.
a b denote the two upper loops, by which the 'strap is attached to the carrod w, the loops a b being formed at the two opposite ends of the strap by doubling over each end and securing it to the main partof the Vstrap by a rivet, c, or d, the two rivets also securingthe two parts e j' of the strap to the opposite ends of a crossbar or plate, g, which connects the two parts of the strap and holds them apart or in relative position, as seen in the drawing and in my aforesaid patent. In my present construction I make the connecting-bar or plate g wide and rivet to the strap, not only at the two upper corners, but at the lower corners, as seen at h i, the plate being preferably narrowed from the top, so that the two parts of the strap may readily cross and be riveted at 7c, leaving or forming the hand-hold Z below the rivet. v Upon the front of the plate g I place the card m, having printed, inscribed, or painted upon itany advertisement or representation, the plate being preferably made with lips n o,
`to secure the card in place, and the straps also preferably lapping over theoppositeends of the card. The card or advertisement may be painted or printed directly upon the plate, but I prefer the inserted card. It will be obvious that a iirmer supportis givenY to the strapv by widening the connecting-plate or bar and increasing the points of its attachment to theV straps.; and I not only obtain this advantage by usingthe wide plate, but I also obtain a much better receptacle for a card than would be afforded by the narrow bar Shown in my aforesaid patent.
I claim- A car-Strap having the two rodattaching loops a b, united and kept apart by a rigid plate or connection, g, when such plate is made with lips n o, for holdin g an advertising card, substantially as shown and described.
' HENRY S. VROOMAN.
