Be it known that we, Amig-iii WARDs and Emitir. K. Rossem, citizens of the United States, iesiding, iespectiveiy, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and S te oit' illinois, end Dalias, in tbe county of Dalias State ci Texasj have jointly invented certain new and usefui fiiipovemeii a' 1Wiitingiviachilies, of Wbibh 'tbe oiiowing is a speciicatiozi..

A furthe? obfect of my invention is tbe provision of means to icotete the platen step by step each actuation of one or more of toe keys. y l
Futhei objects and advantages of my in vention Wiii be apparent it is better imderstood by i'eei'esoe to the oiioi, specification when ead in coimectioii Wi. the accompanying dawiiig,

Fig. e is an end eievation thereof with portion of the frame in section.
Refeence cbez'actei' l designates tbe piaten which will preieiabiy bave the ioim of a oiiei fast upon a shaft @C which is journaied in semi-cicuiai open' bearings 3 fomed in the upper ends of s paiiu ot stand aids 2. Slotted members 5 are siidabiy secured o'veis the beatings by screws 5u. When it is desired to remove the pieten from the machine., the screws 5a may be loosened and tbe members 5 slid clear of the beaiiiigs 3. The shaft 4 cairies a handdnob La on one end thereof. Upon the to of the universal bar is pivotally mounte a bell crank 26, the pivotal point being at the apex of the bell-crank. One arm of the member' a ratchet wheel 28 secured to the shaft 4l ad- ,jacent one extremity of the platen; Owing to the construction just described, after any key has been struck, the platen will be subjected to a clockwise rotation as the key is being returned to its normal position by the universal bar. Thus it will be seen that as the various keys of the machine are'successively struck, the platen will be intermittently rotated and will automatically cause the portion of the ribbon between the arms 9 to gradually l shift` up and down. The vertical displacement to which the ribbon is subjected will be such that the type carried by the bars 20 may strike against the upper and lower portions of the ribbon according as the latter is in its lowered or raised position.
It will of course be understood that the ribbon will also be intermittently fed in a direction parallel with the platen while the machine is being used, but no/description of the mechanism accomplishing this result is essential herein since it has no direct relation with the invention herein set forth.
The invention is presented as including all such changes and modications as come Within the scope of the following claims.
I claim: y
1. In a writing machine, the combination of a frame, a platen rotatably mounted thereon, ribbon spools rotatably mounted' on said frame in normally fixed relationthereto, and means engaging the ribbon beimpart a lateral movement to the portion.
of the ribbon between said arms. 3. In a writing machine, the combination -1 e xed relation;
of a frame, a platen rotatably mounted thereon, ribbon spools rotatably mounted on' said frame in normally iixed relation thereto, means engaging the ribbon betweenA said spools and actuated by the rotation of to engage the ribbon between said spools,
means operable when lsaid platen is rotated to automatically actuate said arms to impart frame, a platen rotatably mounted' a lateral movement to the portion of the ribbon between said arms, type bars mounted adjacent the platen, keys connected to said type bars, and an operative'connection between said keys and platen, whereby when one of the former is actuated the'latter is caused to '.rotate.
, 5. In a writing machine, the combination of a frame, a platen, rotatably mounted thereon, ribbon spools rotatably mounted on said frame in normall fixed relation thereto, pivoted arms having means thereon to engage the ribbon between said spools, a cam operable when said platen is rotated to automatically actuate -said ar-ins't'o impart a lateral movement to the portion ofA saidv ribbon between -said arms, a plurality of type` bars pivoted adjacent said platen, a member arranged to swing, a connection betweeneach type bar and Asaid member, andcooperating means on said platennand'member whereby the former is rotated when either of said type bars is actuated.
' G. In' a writing machine, the Combination in normally fixed relation tothe bed, t p e of a bed, a platen, rotatable spools mounted' i bars mounted adjacent the platema Vrib on 'carried by the spools and traversing between the platen and the typel bars, ribbon sup- .ilo
ports at each end of the platenbetween said spools, and means operated by the platen for swinging the ribbon supports independently of the spools.
7. In a writing machine, the combination of a bed, a platen, rotatable spools mounted in normally iixed relation to thebed, type bars mounted adjacent the platen, a ribbon I carried by the spools and traversing between ports at each end of the platen between said of the spools, and key-actuated means for. imparting rotation to the platen. Y
8. In a writing machine, the combination with a platen, a ribbon, and means automatically operated by the platen for shifting' the ribbon sidewise, of a plurality of type the platen and the type bars, ribbon siiphars pivoted adjacent the platen, a member arranged to wing, a connection between each type har andthe. ineinher` and means inonnted on the lnelnber for imparting rotation to the platen.
S). In a writing 'niaehine, the con'xbination with a platen having a ratchet at one end, and a rihhon traversing longitudinally ot the platen, of a plurality of pivoted type hars, a hook projectingr 'trom each type -har7 'a spingiag har engaged' by` eaeh hook, a
support, a coiled spring extending from the support to the mvinging har, a belleranl short arin of the bell-crank lever.
