JAMES CLAYTON, OF COVENTRY, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR 'IO COURTATILDS, LIMITED, OF
LONDON, ENGLAND.
DEVICE TO BE EMPLOYED IN MAKING EUNNELS, OR TI-IREAD-GUIDES, FOR USE IN MACHINES FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF ARTIFICIAL SILK.
eeann.
Original application filed April 18, 1916,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, Janus CLAYTON, a
subject of the King of Great Britain, iesid: ing at 12 Middleborough road, Coventry, 1n the county of Warwick, England, have 1nlowing is a specification.
This invention consists in a device whereb funnels, or th'reacbgui'des (for use in machines for the manufacture of artificial silk, to guide the thread into'the rotating spinning boxes) furnished (according to my invention'the subject of an applieation'for patent filed by me on April-18, 1916, and
bearing Serial No, 91,988, of which the present application is a division) with a ferrule, or sleeve, which surrounds that part of the said funnel, or threadgguide, which is to be supported through the medium of the ferrule, or sleeve, in the fitting, or hearing, of the 1nachine,,the;said ferrule, or sleeve, being afiixed to the funnel, or thread-guide, while it is held in a device suchthat the longitudinalaXis of the said ferrule, or sleeve,
is supported in the same-line as that in which the axial lines or'centers, of the aforesaid upper and lower supports are situated.
The said device consists of an upright provided at top, with a projecting arm, and at bottom with another projecting arm, the distance between these arms being sufficient to support between, preferably cone-ended, bearing pieces the funnel, or thread-guide, one of the said bearing pieces being carried by the lower arm and the other of the said bearing pieces being a rod capable of slid-' mg in an opening 1n the upper arm in which it can be fixed by means of a set-screw, or the like. Carried by the said upright is an intermediate arm at the distance from the lower bearing point in accordance with the distance from the lower end of the tubular opening is in the fixed part of the arm, the
part of the funnel, or thread-guide, at which the ferrules, or sleeves, are to be fixed on all the funnels, or thread-guides, so that the length of the tubular part of the funnel, or thread-guide, below the upper part of the ferrule, or sleeve, is the same. in all cases. The holes in the three arms, namely the two Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 24;, 191W.
Serial No. 91,9ss. Dividedand this application filed August 17,
Serial No. 115,528.
' for the supports, and'the one. for the reception of the ferrule, or sleeve, are bored st) that their longitudinal axes are all in one straight line.
hen the funnel, or thread-guide, and the ferrule, 0r sleeve, are supported in the manner described, a substance which can by heat, or otherwise, be brought to a condition .sothat it is, pourable and will set sufiiclently (such as pitch) is poured into the .space between the ferrule, or sleeve, as described in the specification of my aforesaid application.
The accompanying drawing shows a device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 1 shows the funnel, or threadguide, for the makingof which the said device is used, Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation and Fig. 3 is a transverse section, (on the line A, B, Fig. 2) of the device showing a funnel, or thread-guide, provided with a ferrule, or sleeve, supported therein.
1, is tubular part of the funnel, or threadguide, and 2, is the enlargement, or cup, part, at top. The ferrule, or sleeve, is marked 3.
The device constituting this invention is constructed and used as follows An upright L, is formed .at top with a pro ecting arm. 5, and at bottom with a pro ecting arm 6. The lower arm 6, carries a' cone-ended bearing piece, 7, and the upper arm carries a coneended bearing piece constituted by the rod 8, capable of sliding in the upper arm 5, the said rod being shown provided with a knob 8 for convenience of manipulation and being fiXable in position by a set-screw 9. The arm which carries the ferrule, or sleeve, 8, to be fixed to the funnel,or thread-guide, is marked 10. It is shown as being made in two parts secured together .by a hinge pin 10, and is formed with an opening to receive and fit thesaid ferrule, or sleeve, one portion of which other portion of the said opening being in v parts are secured together by a screw, or
clip. In the drawing a wire clip 11, is shown for this purpose.
When the parts are thus secured pitch, or other suitable substance, is introduced to the space between the inside of the ferrule, or sleeve, 3, and the outside of tubular part of the funnel, or thread-guide, as shown at 12, a rubber-band, or some material such as putty, for example, being applied to the ower part of the space to retain the pitch till it is set What I claim is 1. A device for ailixing a ferrule to a tubular thread guide, comprising means engaging the upper and lower ends ofthe tubularguide to hold the latter in predeterg.
tubular thread gu1de,:compr1sing centering mined axial position and clamping, means for holding a ferrule surrpunding the'guide but spaced therefrom to receive an interposed cement.
2. A device for afiixing a ferrule to a tubular thread guide, comprising members relatively displaceable to permit jthe'inser- .tion therebetween of the upper and lower ends-of the tubular guide and to hold the latter in predetermined axial position in combination with means for holding-a ferrule surrounding the guide but spaced therefrom to receive an interposed cement.
3. A device for .aiiixing a ferrule to a tubular thread guide, comprising means engaging the upper and lower ends of the tubular guide to hold the'latter in predetermined axial position, a fixed support for holding a ferrule in'coaxial position on saidguide but spaced therefrom to receive an interposed cement, together, with a cooping a ferrule-receiving groove coaxial with the tubular guide.
5. device for aflixing aferrule to a devices for engaging the" opposite ends of the guide and holding the same in prede- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
