ATTACHMENT FOR conrLINe A PUMP To A WINDMILL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 26, 1915. Serial No. 10,808.
the cam lever in order to afford facilities for obtaining a quick connection and at the.
same time obviate premature breaking of parts.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character wherein theparticularly formed spring or resilient agent may be cheaply produced and which is constructed in order to afford facilities whereby the cam lever may be quickly and mounted in conjunction therewith.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type in question that is extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and highly practical from both the standpoint of the manufacturer and the standpoint of the user, and Which, it is believed, may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent during the continuance of the following description.
These objects are accomplished by such means as are shown in their preferred form in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like parts throughout the several views:-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing my invention as applied to a pump rod and wind mill drive member, and
Fig. 2 is a View in elevation also showing m invention in a like position.
ln the present embodiment, I have shown a wind mill drive member 10, of the usual construction, provided adjacent its lower end with opposed wear plates 11 and 12 respectively, while fastening members such as shown at 13 are passed laterally through the plates and the drive member in order to retain the former in proper position. Wear plate 11 carries a suitably positioned guide let for reception of a pump rod 15, while the guide is in turn provided with a transverse aperture or way 16 intersecting the longitudinal bore thereof and designed to receive a holding pawl hereinafter described. The pump rod 15 may be provided throughout its extent with suitably spaced openings 17 to receive the holding pawl or stud of guide 14, whereby it may be retained in certain adjusted positions with respect to the drive member 10.
Cam actuating lever 2d may be mounted on the bent portion 20 of spring 18 as at 25, for engagement with wear plate 12. There fore it will be noted that upon proper manipulation of cam lever 2t, the spring 18 may be moved so as to draw holding pawl Patented Apr. 2%, 1917..v
or stud 22 out of a locking position and per mit of adjustment of the pump rod with respect to drive member 10.
The operation of my invention is substantially as follows Spring 18 through its own tension normally retains holding pawl or stud 22 in a locking position so as to effect a rigid coupling between pump rod and drive member 10. When desiring to release pump rod 15 for the purpose of effecting adjustment or otherwise, cam lever 24 may be moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 thereby forcing the free end of spring 18 outwardly with respect to drive member 10 and withdrawing holding pawl or stud 22 from a locking position with respect to pump rod 15. Again, upon movement of cam lever 24 to its initial position, holding pawl or stud 22 will be automatically moved to a locking position through the instrumentality of spring 18.
As hereinbefore stated, the bent portion of spring 18 performs a dual function, namely, serving to retain theintermediate portion of spring 18 in spaced relation to drive member 10 and to afford facilities for the proper mounting of cam lever 24. Pivot member 25 may be so placed with respect to bent portion 20 that premature breaking of both the bent portion and the pivot member is precluded. In other words, detachable or permanently fixed bearings are eliminated and the spring 18 itself is rendered capable of properly carrying cam lever 24. The particular features of the bent portion 20 are especially important.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily understood and therefore further detail description is deemed unnecessary.
In reducing my invention to practice, I find that the form referred to herein as the most practical and preferred embodiment is the most eflicient, but realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in concurrence with the adoption of my device, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction and in the proportion of parts may be resorted to when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a coupling device of the character de scribed, the combination with a pump rod having a series of spaced openings and a member coupled therewith, a guide carried by said member to slidably receive said pump rod and having an opening to register with a selected one of said openings, and a wear plate opposite said guide, of a spring affixed at one end to said member and turned ninety degrees adjacent its other end to provide a bearing portion, a cam lever having its pivot member journaled through said bearing portion, and a retaining stud carried at a fixed point on said spring to operate in the way of said guide and enter a selected one of said orifices to retain said pump rod and said member in rigid relation, said cam lever engaging on said wear plate, whereby upon manipulation of said cam lever, said retaining stud may be moved to release said pump rod, substantially as described.
