Description
' UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS A. COLEMAN, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOI'. TO AMERICAN CHEMICAL &
MANUFACTQRING COMPANY, INC., OF NORFOLK,
VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION 01 OIL AND THE METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME.
Patented Apr. 1'7, 1917.
VIRGINIA.
1 223 150. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 27, 1915. Serial N 0. 17,392.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lnwrs A. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil and the Method of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to an improved oil, and more particularly to an oil which possesses water proofing characteristics and which will not harden or stiifen the surface to which the same is applied.
An object of this invention is to provide a composition of this character which will not stiffen the surface to which it is applied as, for instance, a fabric, which will support and fix a pigment to the surfaceto which the composition isapplied, a composition which when applied to leather will soften the same and make the leather water-proof, and a composition which carries "a pigment and fixes the same to a wall when the composition is applied thereto and renders the Wall impervious to moisture.
The above objects and advantages of the invention are carried out in the improved composition which is here referred to as an oil, and which comprises an admixture of the following ingredients Boiled or evaporated linseed oil- 80% Oil of eucalyptus 10% Spirits of turpentine or its. described equivalent or varnish makers and paint makers naphtha 5%.
Resinous tar pitch 5% the pine tree, and the resinous tar pitch is the residue of spirits of'turpentine during its process of manufacture.
The method of admixing the above-noted ingredients is as follows:
The linseed oil after having the water extracted therefrom is again heated to the boiling point. The resinous tar pitch is reduced to a perfectly melted state-by heating. The
is maintained at the boiling point, and the resinous tar pitch in the upper boiler is per mitted to tow gradually into the lower boiler to ad] nix with the boiling linseed oil.
This mixture is maintained at the boiling point until "he combined spirits of 111.113.7811 tine and oil of eucalyptus have been a ded thereto. This new composition becomes a heavy bodied mixture and may be dilutedto any desired strength by adding thereto varnish maliers and paint makers naphtha and tri-chlo rethylene.
It is, of (ourse, understood that the proportions abcve given may be slightly varied for the application of the composition to various suri aces and materials.
What I caim is, i
1. An oil comprising a mixture of evaporated linseed oil, oil of eucalyptus, spirits of turpentine, and resinous tar pitch, in substantially t' 1e proportions stated.
2. An oil comprising substantially evaporated linseei oil 80%, oil of eucalyptus 10%, spirits of ti rpentine or its described equivalent 5%, an 1 resinous tar pitch 5%..
3. An-oil comprising a mixture of linseed" oil, oil of eucalyptus, spirits of turpentine, varnish ma' (ers and paint makers naphtha, and resinous 'tar pitch in substantially the proportions stated.
. 4. An oil comprising an admixture of evaporated linseed oil, oil of eucalyptus, spirits of turpentine or its described equivalent, resinous tar pitch, and tri-chlorethylene in substantially the proportions stated.
5. An oil comprising an admixture .of evaporated linseed oil, oil of eucalyptus, spirits of t irpentine, resinous tar pitch, and a diluent an substantially the proportions stated.
6. The process of making the herein-described oil which consists in extracting water from linseed oil and then heating the same to b( iling point, heating resinous tar pltch to (11166 the same to a melted state and gradually mixing the pitch with the my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
