To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM H. STUTLER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at West Union, in the county of Doddridge and State of l Vest Virginia, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Churn-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in motion transmitting devices, more particularly to devices employed for transmitting motion to churn dashers and for like purposes, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efiiciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a supporting stand having a detachable top with the operating mechanism mounted upon the top, the top together with a portion of the operating mechanism being reversible in position to dispose the operating mechanism within the area of the stand when the device is to be shipped or stored.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure l is a side elevation tion of the improved device.

The improved device includes a supporting stand formed'of a lower or base member 10 an upper or platform member 11, and connecting standards or rods 12. The standards 12 are rigidly connected in the base member 10, preferably by clamp nuts indicated at 13, each standardhaving a lower stop collar 14 bearing upon the upper face of the base 10. By this means the standards are rigidly supported in vertical position relative to the base. At their upper ends the standards 12 are provided with stop collars 15 bearing against the lower face of the platform 11, the standards being threaded above the shoulders 15 to receive holding devices such as wing nuts 16 bearing upon the upper faceof the platform 11. By this means the platform may be readily detachedand overturned and secured with its normally outer face presented downwardly as shown in Fig. 4, the object to be hereafter explained.
Bearing upon the platform 11 is a base plate indicated as a whole at 17 and L shaped in outline as shown in Fig. 5. One portion of the member 17 is provided with hearing faces 18 to receive the lower face of aplate l9 illustrated in Fig. 6. The portion of the member 17 in which the bearing faces 18 are located is extended longitudinally as shown at 20, the extending portion having a guide aperture 21. The other portion of the member 17 is provided with bearing faces 22 and an intermediate slot 23, the bearing faces 22 being adapted to receive a plate 24 which .is held in position by a clamp bolt 25vvhioh extends through the slot 23 and an aperture in the member 11, the bolt having a head 26 bearing upon the plate 24 and wing nut 27 engaging the bolt and bearing" against the lower face of the platform 11. By this means the plate 24 and its attachments may be coupled to the member 17 and adjustable thereon to any required extent'within the range of the slot 23. The bearing faces 22 thus also serve as guides to control the movement of the plate 24.
The member 17 is apertured to receive a clamp bolt 28 which extends likewise through apertures in the platform 11 and the plate 19 and is provided with a head 29 at one end bearing upon the'member 17 and a wing nut 30 bearing beneath the lower face of the platform 11.
The bolts 25 and 28 thus operate to permanently bind the member 17 to the platform 11, while at the same time binding the plates 19 and 2% in position on the member 17. a
Rising from the plate19 are standards 31-32, the standard 32 being directed at its upper end at right-angles to the longitudinal plane of the standard, as shown at 33, and terminating in a vertical bearing or guide sleeve 34; to receive an actuating rod 35. At its lower end the standard 32 is formed with a lateral offset 36 terminating ina vertically directed guide sleeve or bear ing 37, in vertical alinement with the guide sleeve 3-l, to receive the rod 35, the latter being thus arranged for vertical slidable movement through the guide sleeves and likewise through the aperture 21 of the eX- tension 20 of the member 17.
Mounted for rotation through suitable bearings in the standards 3132 is a main operating shaft 38, carrying a balance wheel 39, which is located between the standards 3l-32, and a motion transmitting crank 40, the latter being located between the standard 32 and operating member 35. Mounted upon the rod 35 is a collar 41, the latter being adjustable upon the rod and ield in adjusted position by a set screw 42. Mounted upon the standard 32 is a guide rod 43, the latter being connected at its upper end in the offset 33 of the standard 32 and supported at its lower end in a pin l i which is supported in the body of the standard 32 intermediate its ends. Projecting from the collar tl is an arm 45 apertured to slidably engage the member 43.
A connecting rod a6 is pivoted at one end at 47 to the crank 40 and pivoted at the other end at 48 to the collar 41. By this means it will be obvious that as the shaft 38 and its crank 10 are rotated the motion will be imparted to the rod 35 by the coaction of the members 4E6- l1. The crank 40 is provided with a plurality of apertures spaced apart to receive the pivot member 47 so that the location of the pivot member may be changed relative to the crank and thus control the length of the throw of the member 35, as will be obvious.
Mounted upon the member 35 between the collar 41 and the bearing 36 is another holding collar 49 having a set screw 50 whereby it may be adjustably coupled to the member 35. A spring indicated at 51 is coupled at its upper end to the offset portion 33 of the standard 32, as shown at 52 and coupled at 53 to the collar 49. The spring thus operates to maintain the member 35 yieldably in its upper position, and when the shaft 38 is actuated the member 35 is moved downwardly against the resistance of the spring, and when the return movement takes place the reaction of the spring will elevate the member 35 and materially assist the action and reduce the force required to operate the rod. The member 35 is preferably tubular to decrease the weight, and slidably engaging in the lower end of the member 35 below the platform 11, is a collar or sleeve 5% having a set screw 55, the member 35 being provided with an aperture indicated at 56 through which the inner end of the set screw operates. A motion transmitting rod 57, for instance the dasher rod of a churn, is slidably engaged within the tubular member 35 and against which the inner end of the set screw 55 engages, as illustrated in Fig. 8. By this simple means the sleeve or collar is rigidly coupled to the member 35, while at the same time the rod 57 is adjus ably coupled to the member 35. The cream receptacle portion of a churn, indicated at 58, is mounted upon the base 10 and provided with a closure 59 apertured to receive the rod 57, as shown in Fig. 1. The dasher members indicated at 60 are adjustably supported upon the member 57 by set screws 61.. By this arrangement it will be obvious that when the rod 35 is actuated as heretofore described the dasher members will be reciprocated within the churn body and produce the churning action. The dasher members are constructed as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, each with a central hub 62 encircling the dasher rod 57 and utilized to receive the set screw 61, the arms of the dasher being arranged at right-angles to each other and each formed of a plurality of relatively narrow ribs 63 and intermediate spaces 66%, the ribs being preferably diamond shaped transversely, as shown in Fig. 10. Any required number of the dasher members may be employed upon the rod 57, but generally twowill be used, as shown. Any required number of arms may be employed upon each dasher member, but generally four will be used, as shown.
Rising from the plate 24 are standards 65, spaced apart and connected at their upper ends as shown in Fig. 2. Mounted for rotation through the standard 65 is a shaft 66 carrying a chain wheel 67 operating. between the standard 65 and adapted to receive a motion transmitting chain 68 which engages overa chain wheel 69 on the shaft 38 externally of the'standard 31.v The shaft 66 is provided with an operating crank 70. By this means it will be obvious that motion will be imparted to the shaft 66 by actuating a crank 70 and this motion transmitted to the shaft 38 by the coaction of the chain wheels 6769 and chain 68. The wheel 67 is larger than the Wheel 69, hence a 'relatively slow motion of the crank will cause a correspondingly rapid motion of the shaft 38 and the mechanism connected therewith.
All of the parts Will be of metal, except the members 10-11, which may be of Wood,
but may likewise be of metal if preferred. The metal parts will preferably be of aluminum or like metal or metallic compound, to combine strength with lightness.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In an apparatus of the class described, a lower base member having a plurality of vertical standards and adapted to support a churn body, a supporting platform reversibly mounted upon said standards, a mechanism adapted to operate a churn dasher device and supported upon said platform, whereby the dasher operating mechanism may be disposed between the base and the platform when not in use.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, a lower base member having a plurality of vertical standards and adapted to support a churn body, a supporting platform reversibly mounted upon said standards, a base plate carried by said platform and including horizontally directed bearing members, a base member engaging said horizontal bearings and having a lower vertical guide sleeve, a supporting frame rising from said base member and having an upper vertical guide sleeve, a dasher operating member slidable in said vertical guide sleeves and adapted to .be engaged with a dasher device operated in said churn body, and means carried by said supporting frame for actuating said dasher operating members.
8. In an apparatus of the class described, a base plate adapted to be attached to a sup port including horizontally directed bear ings, a base member engaging said horizon tal bearings and having a lower vertical guide sleeve, a supporting frame rising from said base member and having an upper vertical gulde sleeve, a dasher operating member' shdable 1n sald vertical guide sleeves and adapted to be engaged with a dasher device, and means carried by said slotted frame for actuating said dasher operating member.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, a base plate adapted to be attached to a support and including horizontally directed bearings arranged in pairs at right angles to each other, a base member engaging one. pair of sald horizontal bearings and havmg a lower vertical guide sleeve, a supporting frame rising from said base member and having an upper vertical guide sleeve, an operating member slidable in said vertical guides and adapted to be engaged with a dasher device, another plate member engaging the other pair of said horizontal bearings, another supporting frame rising from said last mentioned plate member, and means carried by said supporting frames for actuating said operating member.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, a lower base member having a plurality of vertical standards adapted to support a churn body, a supporting platform reversibly mounted upon said standards, a base plate carried by the supporting platform and including horizontally directed bearings, a plate member engaging said horizontal bearings and having a lowervertical guide, a supporting frame rising from said plate member and having an upper vertical guide, an operating member slidable in said vertical guide and adapted to be engaged with a dasher device, a spring operating to maintain said operating member yieldably at one end of its movement, and means carried by said supporting frame for actuating said operating member against the resistance of said spring.
