Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ITA'MIANIEL` M. PEPPER, OF DANBURY, NORTHVCAROLDTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO AND OTHER PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,276, dated December 26, 1871,' antedated December 14, i871.
To all whom t may concer-n:
Be itknown that I, NATHANIEL M. PEPPER, ofDanbury, county of Stokes and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Tobacco and other Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying draw-V 'ing forming part of this specification, and in which the ligure is a perspective View of my i1nproved press.
The essential features of my invention consist in the concentrated force applied to a press by means of tanks filled with water, so constructed as to operate upon one end of a horizontal arm or lever, hinged or otherwise suitably fastened at the other end in an upright beam, on the side of which the press Works up and down in suitable bearings over the shaper or box containing the tobacco or other substance to be pressed.
Referring to the drawing, A may represent the door of the tobacco-house, having an opening cut through at or near one end, over which is suspended a horizontal beam, (l, supported by upright braces D D', the bottom of which is securely grooved or fastened into the floor. A horizontal armor lever, E, is hinged or pivoted in the upper part of the standard, on the side of which the press H is mounted in guidesff, and is connected at the top with the lever E, which passes from the upright beam B across to and rests directly under the horizontal beam C, where it is held in place by means of a rope or chain, one end of which is attached to suitable pins or hooks on the end of the lever E, and by passing upward and over a roller or block, b, fastened on the beam G, connects at the other end with the handles of or to the tank F,situated directly under'the open ing in the floor. A similar tank, F', is placed above the lower tank F, allowing its edge to rest upon the middle of the ltan k F, directly under it, the handles of the said upper tank F being securely fastened into an upright swinging beam or hook, d, which passes up through an opening in the lever E, Where it is secured by a pin, leaving a small space for the beam to oscillate to and fro.
These tanks may be constructed for any desired capacity from fifty gallons and upward, are filled with water by means of a pump, cistern, pipes, or steam-engine, or by otherdesired means, are both provided with gates o c, which work up and down in' grooves on the sides of the tank.
In its operation theupper tank F is filled with water, the weight of which bears down the tank and with it the lever E, to the end of which it is attached. As the lever descends it forces the press-block H down upon the tobacco or-other substance desired to be pressed, which is placed directly under the press-block-H on the platform a, arranged in a suitable sh aper or box.
When found to be sufficiently pressed the weight may be removed by pulling the corde', which 1 raises the gate c', thereby allowing the water in the tank F to iiow into the tank F directly under it, which as it iills descends, thus lifting the lever E, with tank F and press-block H, up to their former position, thereby removing the press from oif the tobacco or other substance. tank F may now be emptied by raising the gate c by means of the cord e into a cistern or other suitable place; it may again bepumped from the lower tank F into the upper tank F', thus preventing any waste of water.
The simplicity of working and durability of construction, combined with the great pressure obtained by this means, will be found reliable in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f Y The arrangement of the tanks F F", cords or chains ce', beam or hook 1.,lever E,presserblock H, standard B, and framing l) 1 C, all constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
To 4the above I have signed my name this 17th day of April, 1871.
NATHANIEL M. PEPPER.
