To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. IRWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston, in the county of Parks and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Axle- Pattern Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reterence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and ligures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a device for giving a. wagon wheel the right pitch for a plumb spoke, using any shape of skein or width of tread and the object in view is toevercome the difliculties commonly met with in laying out work of this nature by hand and insure the maintaining` of true center lines and plumb wheel, regardless of its diameter.
The invention consists further in the provision of a pattern or templet which is adjustable and comprises a simple and efficient apparatus having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a bar to which the apparatus is attached, it being understood that each end of the bar has a similar construction for each skein, and B designates an extensible bar held in Specification of Letters Patent.

dii-ferent adjusted positions through the medium of the screw C which passes through an aperture in the bar B and is adjustable in the slot A in the bar A, the thumb nut C being litted to the screw C to hold the latter in different adjusted positions. A bar T is adjustably held upon the bar B through the medium ot' a screw D having a winged nut D thereon. Said bar T carries a pin E to which the toggle links E are pivoted and also a second pin E2 whichl is movable within the slot F formed in the bar T and connects pivotally the adjacent ends of the toggle links E3. The two sets of toggle links E and E3 are pivotally connected together through the medium of the pins II, having a sliding movement in the slots I formed in the adjustable straight edges K. Other toggle links, 'designated respectively by letter J, are pivotally connected to the pin J which is mounted upon the bar T and also pivotally connected through the medium of the pins L with the straight edges K, while the toggle links N, which are pivoted to the pins L, are valso pivoted to the pin M, having a sliding movement in a slot M formed in the bar T.
A lever O is pivotally connected at one end to the pin E2 and is slotted as at O for the recept-ion of the screw O2 in the bar T, and O3 is a thumb nut mounted upon the screw O2 and adapted to hold the bar O in dilierent adjusted positions. A second bar, designated by letter Q, is pivotally connected at one end to the pin M and is slotted for the reception of the screw O2 and said bars have their ends, designated respectively by numerals 04 and O5, bent outwardly forming handles as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Said toggle links are adapted to cause the lining bars K to adjust themselves to the sha 3e of the iron skein and, when held in adjusted positions, retain the bar T upon a true center line. It will be understood that the portions of the pins which engage the slots in the straight edges are squared so that they will slide freely and not bind and allow each part tree movement. The straight edges have other slots, designated by letter R, formed therein are mounted respectively upon the pins R3 and R5. The said straight edges R and R4, through the medium of the adjusting means shown and described, may be set to any angle to conform to the shape of the outer portion of the wall of the skein. It will be understood t-hat a very important feature of the present invention consists in the means for adjusting the toggle links or the portion of the device which projects into the skein so as to give a wheel any pitch desired and keep a plumb spoke.
Pivoted to the pivotal pin D is a pointer, designated by letter S, which pointer is slot-- ted for the reception of the screw D and may be held in different adjusted positions. It will be understood that the portion of the pin D, which passes through the bar T, is squared in order that it will not turn therein but the portion which passes through the bar B is round so that the latter may oscillate. Said pointer S has an 'index plate Gr which slides upon the bar T, and G designates a'set screw which holds the same in place upon the bar B. A suitable shield, designated by letter X, is shown in Fig. 6 and the ends of the pointer S are turned down to act as guides upon the bar T to allow it to be held always in a center line. Said pointer moves with the bar T and indicating on the index plate the angle which the bar T assumes with the bar B, the adjustable movements of the same being shown in the diagrammatic View in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
In operation, when it is desired to lay out an axle to which the skeins are to be fitted and to maintain a true center and pitch, the bars B are adjusted to the proper length, after which the toggle links are fitted into the skein, after the thumb nuts upon the adjusting levers have been loosened. This will allow the toggles and straight edges K to adjust themselves to the size and shape of the inside of the skein and at the same time will hold the bar T to a truc center and bring the skein in a true position. This being done, the thumb nut holding the levers is tightened which will hold the toggle links in adjusted positions. This being done, the straight edges R and R* are adjusted to fit the outline of the skein and which adjustments will give the true outline of the inside of the skein, thus giving the true distances between the skein or length over all and the shape of the skein. The indicating pointer now comes into play. By loosening the pin D, the pointer may be adjusted to the length of the spoke of the wheel, either shortening or lengthening the pointer and adjusting the axle plate with the pointer, to the axle or pitch desired. After setting the pointer and plate, the bar T is moved until the pointer comes to the proper ligure on the index plate which will indicate the proper pitch desired. This adjustment being made, the thumb nut D is tightened, holding the bars T and B rigid. The pattern or templet is now set to its true shape with the proper distance, centers and pitch, ready to lay off the proper shape for the axles to be cut to fit the skein.

A device for determining the right pitch for a plumb spoke on wagon wheels using various shaped skeins, consisting of an extension bar and support therefor, straight edges with adjustable toggle link connections between the same and said extension bar adapted to conform to the pitch of the skein, levers connected to said toggle links for operating the same to throw the straight edges into different adjusted positions, means for holding the levers in adjusted positions, and means for indicating the adjustment of the straight edges.

A device for determining the right pitch for a plumb spoke on wagon wheels using various shaped skeins, consisting of an extension bar and support therefor, straight edges with adjustable toggle link connections between the same and said extension bar, adjustable straight edges piv! oted together and connected to one of the irst referred to straight edges, and means for holding the straight edges in diii'erent adjusted positions.

A device for determining the right pitch for a plumb spoke on wagon wheels using various shaped skeins, consisting of a slotted extension bar and support, therefor, sets of toggle links pivoted together, one pair of links of each set having stationary pivotal connection with the extensible bar and the other pair of each set having sliding pivotal connection with the bar, straight edges having sliding pivotal connections with said toggle links, means for actuating said links, and means for holding the straight edges in different adjusted positions.
5. A device for determining the right pitch for a plumb spoke on wagon wheels using various shaped skeins, consisting of a slotted extension bar and support therefor, sets of toggle links pivoted together, one pair of .links of each set having stationary pivotal connection with the extensible bar and the other pair of each set having sliding pivotal connection With the bar, straight edges having sliding pivotal connections with said toggle links, means for actuating said links, levers connected to the links which have sliding pivotal connection with the bar, and means for holding said bars in different adjusted positions.`
6. A device for determining the right pitch for a plumb spoke on Wagon Wheels using various shaped skeins, consisting of a slotted extension bar and support therefor, sets of toggle links pivoted together, one pair of links of each set having stationary pivotal connection with the extensible bar and the other pair of each set having sliding pivotal connection with the bar, straight edges having sliding pivotal connections with said toggle links, means for actuating said links, levers connected to the links which have sliding pivotal connection with the bar, an indicating pointer pivotally connected to the extension bar, and a dial ad jacent to the pointer to adjust the pitch of the straight edges.

A device for determining the right pitch for a plumb spoke on Wagon `Wheels using various shaped skeins, consisting of a slotted extension bar and support therefor, sets of toggle links pivoted together, one pair of links of each set having stationary pivotal connection with the extensible bar and the other pair of each set having sliding pivotal connection with the bar, straight edges having sliding pivotal connections with said toggle links, means for actuating said links, levers connected to the links Which have sliding pivotal connection With the bar, said extension being slotted, a pointer having pivotal connection With said extension bar, a dial mounted upon the extension bar, and a shield upon the dial and over said indicator.

A device for determining the right pitch for a plumb spoke on Wagon Wheels Gotica of this patent may be obtained for using various shaped skeins, consisting or an extensible bar, a slotted support, means for holding said extensible bar and support in different adjusted positions, said bar being slotted, toggle links pivoted to each other and to said bar, pins carried by the toggle links, slotted straight edges having slots in Which said pins are adapted to have sliding movements, other toggle links pivotally connected together and to said pins, levers pivotally connected to the second referred to set of toggle links, said levers being slotted, screws passing through the slots in the levers, Winged nuts upon the screws, and other straight edges pivoted together and having sliding pivotal connection with the first referred to straightl edges.
