WORM-GEAR-DI-SENGAGING MECHANISM.

Be it known that I, GEORGE FILLIoN, S12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Linden, in the county of I-Ioughton, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Worm- Gear-Disengaging Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in gearing and is directed more particularly to a novel mechanism embodying inter-meshing gears and means by which said gears may be quickly and conveniently disengaged.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an adjustable bed with the invention associated therewith,
F ig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views showing the means of disengaging the worm shaft from the gearing, and
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
In the specific form shown in the drawings, I provide a bedstead having the usual metallic back 1. Rails 2 and 3 are attached to the back in the usual manner and are supported by tubular legs 7 There are two legs 1313 supporting each rail and hollow metal braces 9 connect the legs near the floor, braces 10 are interposed between the bottom of the rails and the lower part of the legs.
The usual bed bottom 11 is pivoted to the heads 8 projecting from the ends of the rails by brackets 12 secured to the under side of the bed bottom and the legs 13-13 extend on each side of the heads and are secured by rivets 1414. These brackets are secured to the bed bottom some distance from the respective end of said bottom, the greater portion of the bed bottom extending over the rails, and supports 15-15 are secured to the end of the bed bottom resting on the rails.

ends and a gear 25 is keyed tothe shaft beside one of the other gear wheels.
A shaft 26 provided with a handle 27 and a worm 28 is secured by a collar 29 within a bracket 30 secured to the cross rail on the back. The handle projects beyond the bed and the worm is adapted to cooperate with the gear 25, to normally turn the shaft 22, thereby revolving the gear 24:.
A bracket 31 is secured to the under side of the rail beside the bracket 20 and is provided on the outside with a dove-tail slot A block 33 provided with a dove-tail rib is loosely carried by the shaft 26 and is adapted to slide in the slot to raise or lower shaft 26 thereby throwing the worm in or out of gear. To accomplish this there is a recess 34; on the underside of the block 33 and a pin 35 having a cam head 36 loosely mounted in the bracket 31 and engaged in the recess whereby upon its actuation to raise and lower the block 33. Pin 35 extends beyond the side of the bed and is provided with a handle 37.
Curved toothed racks 3S38 project downwardly from the bed bottom rails and are secured to the rails by screws 3939 projecting through brackets 4LO10 secured to the inside of the bed bottom rails. The racks are located near the gears 24.2& so that they mesh. The legs are supported on casters 41.
When it is desired to change the angle of the bed bottom the handle 37 is turned so as to throw the worm gear into mesh with the gear 25. The handle 27 is now turned, revolving the shaft 22 which will revolve the gear wheels 24 and force the racks 3S38 up or down according to the direction in which the handle is turned. If desired, the angle of the bed bottom may be changed by turning the handle 23 which directly operates the shaft 22, and turns the gear wheels 2424. Thus it will be seen that my improved bed has a bed bottom which is pivoted to the ends of the side rails and can be adjusted to any desired angle either from the side or end.
The bed may also be elevated by means of the crank 23, the crank 37 having been first adjusted to throw the gear 25 out of engagement with the worm 38. Safety pawls 39 meshing with ratchet teeth 40 maintain the bed in position by controlling the movement of the shaft 36 when the bed is in elevated position. Similar pawls 42, engaging ratchet wheels e3 are attached to the end or the shafts 22 and 26. A loose connection of the shaft 26 with the bracket 30 as shown in Fig. 4; affords means to permit the upward displacement of shaft 26 out of connection.
