The inode of operation my snel Bj; reason of' charge-forming device, or `carhureter, may now be briefly set forth, it being understood that the upper end of the casing 2 is connected with the usual manifold, or other connection, leading to the engine cylinder or cylinders, and that the fuel in the nozzle 1 ismaintained, as already set forth, at or about the level shown in Fig. 1. The needle valve 15 controlling the downwardly directed opening 3 of the nozzle is then lowered by suitably rotating the shell 14; through lever 17, this operation being effected, in the case of an automobile engine, by the hand throttle or foot accelerator. The apertures 21 in the wall of the casing for admitting air into the latter will be simultaneously" opened the proper amount. Should it be desired to increase the proportion of fuel to the amount of air thus ad mitted, the other needle valve 11 may be opened slightly, the amount of such opening remaining unchanged during the run-A ning of the engine, and all regulation being secured by adjustment of the first-named valve. In starting, in order that a sulliciently rich mixturewmay be obtained to prime the engine, as it is called, the outer shell 22 on the casing may be` rotated to substantially entirely close the apertures in the latter, despite the open position of the inner shell.
The modification in construction illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 consists principally in a modified form of shell for controlling the air supply to the casing, a nd in the substitution of other means for shutting oil such air supply in priming the engine. The parts which remain unchanged are designated by the same reference vcharacters as in Figs. l, 2 and 3, and need not be again described. The inner shell 25, however, it will be observed is designed for reciprocable movement only, such movement being secured by means of a bell crank 26 connected with the lower projecting end of the valve stem 27 (corresponding with valve stem 15)', which stein is adjustably held in the shell,

The shell 25 is provided at its respective extremities with beveled annular surfaces 2G and 27 that are adapted to `seat against complementary beveled annular surfaces on the casing and when thus seated to close lateral openings 30 in the latter corresponding with the apertures 21 in the previously described construction. Upon lowering the shell, however, the casing will be opened a corresponding amount at both the upper and lower ends of the shell, as Will be obvious.

In both forms it will be observed that the major portion of the fuel is discharged downwardly, that is against the incoming air. The fuel as it escapes from the nozzle is received on the upper surface 0f the Haring head 18 carried-hy the stem of the valve which controls the downwardly directed nozzle opening. Such liead is preierably of fairly large diameter, and has a sharp edge so that the fuel is distributed in as thin a film as possible hy the time it reaches such edge and thusis adapted to be more readily picked up by the air. The fuel that is discharged through the a-lined opening al of the nozzle, will likewise loe received on this head 18 if not vaporized sooner. The device is throughout of 'simple and substantial construction, having no parts that are liable to get out of order.v

The descriptive terms just referred to should accordingly be understood in this sense.
