HEATING ATTACHMENT FOR FEED-WATER INJECTORS.

To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A.-I-I1LL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Ieating Attachments for Feed-Water Injectors; and I do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in feed water heaters particularly designed for use with locomotives, but capable of use in other connections as will be understood.
One object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for attachment to a feed water injector of a steam boiler and controllable so that the feed water may be supplied to the boiler at a low temperature such as may be desirable in cooling down the boiler, at a comparatively high temperature when the engine is standing or drifting, and at a very high temperature when the engine is working so that a very small amount of contraction will occur in the heating surfaces when the water comes in contact with them.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which may be readily applied to any injector already in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a locomotive showing this improved attachment applied;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of an injector with this improved attachment applied and shown particularly in section.
In the embodiment illustrated this im proved attachment is shown applied to a feed water injector of thetype known on the market as the Ohio injector and in which the usual water supply pipe W is shown designed to be connected with a suitable source (not shown) and which'leads to the combining tube (not shown) and contained in the casing C, the flow of water being controlled by the usual valve V. The steam is supplied to the receiving tube (not shown) within the casing C from the pipe P in the usual manner, the supply of steam being controlled by a lever L connected with a valve within the casing. The usual overflow nozzle N is shown connected with the casing C and a valve o is provided for con trolling air to the overflow chamber such as is usual in injectors of this character. The delivery tube D of the injector is shown at the right of Fig. 2 discharging opposite the check valve 0 o, the stem of which is guided in the usual manner in a guide 9 and) through which the feed water from the injector is discharged usually directly into the boiler feed water pipe.
The attachment constituting this invention is shown applied to the outer or free end of the injector which is screw threaded as shown at s to provide for its connection with the feed water pipe of a boiler. This attachment comprises a casing 1 having outwardly bulged side walls 2 merging at their opposite ends into reduced necks 3 and 4-, the neck 3 being internally threaded for connection with the threads 8 of the injector, and the neck 4 externally threaded to adapt it for connection with a feed water tube of the boiler, saidneck being inserted in the tube in a manner similar to that in which the injector is usually connected by the threaded end 8 thereof.
A tapered nozzle 5 has its outer end formed integral with the casing 1 at the rearend thereof adjacent the base of the neck 3, the larger end of said nozzle being substantially of the same width as said neck. This nozzle extends longitudinally through V the casing 1 with its tapered front end disposed adjacent the front end of the neck 4 being here shown disposed slightly within said neck. By so forming this nozzle and bulging the walls 2 of the casing 1, a steam space or chamber 6 of considerable size is formed within the casing around the nozzle and the tapered walls of the nozzle serve as guides for directing the steam toward the discharge end of the casing, said steam being admitted through an opening 7 formed in the side wall of the casing adjacent the connected end of the nozzle so that the steam entering through this opening impinges against the opposed wall of the nozzle and is directed outwardly thereby to ward the discharge end of the casing in the same direction as the stream of outflowing 7 water and" commingles at the outer end of the casing with the water enteringsaid casingthrough the small end of the nozzle and whereby the steam and water are thor- 'oughly commingled and the water heated V by'the contactof the live steam, a portion o of the steambeing converted into water and pas'singwith the water into the feed water tubes of the boiler, By making the nozzle integral with the-casing said nozzle cannot work loose and the alinement or adp st men't thereofbe changed, I a

venience in description will be termed the main; supply p1pe,11s shown L-shaped or right angular in formation with the longer arm 11 thereof externally threaded at its rear end and connected with a pipe coupling 12 through an opening in one side wall thereof, said coupling 12 being engaged at one. end with the pipe P and at its other end with a pipe P which leads to the steam space of the boiler and through which steam' is supplied both to the pipe P and to the pipe '8 which connects with the heater casing 1. The coupling 12 and'the arm 11 of v pipe 8-form a T-shaped connection.

This section 19 is provided with an angular wrench receiving collar 2-1 as are also the ends of the head 21, to provide for the connection and disconnection of the sections. This pipe 8 is made in sections so that the length thereof may be varied to adapt the attachment to beapplied to injectors of different sizes and in which the delivery end and the steam supply pipe are disposed at varying distances apart.
A pet cook 25 is preferably arranged in the pipe 8 in advance of the three-way valve 14 between said valve and the casing 1 for the purpose of detecting any leakage which might occur in the three-way valve 14:.
The auxiliary steam pipe 18 is preferably jacketed or otherwise protected to prevent the radiation of heat therefrom which would result in the undesirable condensation of the steam during its passage through said pipe from the pipe 16 to the main pipe 8.
In the operation of this device the lever L having been properly positioned to supply water and steam to the delivery tube D in the usual manner when the engine is standing still or drifting, the valve stem 15 is operated to position the three-way valve 14 which it controls into position to bring the rear end or section 22 of the pipe 8 into communication with the steam pipe P and with the casing 1, so that steam is fed through said pipe 8 from the pipe P into the casing and is directed outwardly therefrom b the tapered walls of the nozzle 5 commingling at the outer end of said casing with the water supplied through said nozzle whereby the water is heated to a high temperature before entering the feed water tubes of the boiler.
When the engine is working and it is desired to supply the feed water to the boiler at an extremely high temperature so as to provide for the least possible amount of contraction in the heating surfaces against which the water impinges, the valve stem 15 is turned to position the valve l t'so as to cut off the rear section 22 of the main pipe 8 and bring into communication with said pipe 8' the auxiliary steam supply pipe 13 which is connected with thesteam pipe 16. When this valve is so disposed the superheated steam from the pipe 16 will be directed through the pipe 13, check valve 17 three-way valve 14 into the pipe section 23 from which it passes into the casing 1 of the heater and commingles with the Water admitted into said casing through the nozzle 5, heating said water to an extremely high temperature before it passes from said casing into the feed water tubes of the boiler. It is desirable that when the engine is working that the temperature of the feed water be raised to the highest possible point before contacting with the heating surfaces which are at this time subjected to the intense heat of the fire of the engine and the nearer the temperature of the feed water can be brought to the temperature of these heating surfaces before coming in contact therewith, the less contraction of the surfaces will occur when the water comes in contact with them, and hence this arrangement whereby superheated steam is fed to the casing 1 and commingled with the feed water when the engine is working, has been found most effective.
\Vhen for any reason it is desired to cool off the boiler, the valve 1.4L is so positioned as to cut off communication of both the pipe 18 and the main pipe section 22 from the casing 1 and permit the water to enter the feed water tubes directly from the delivery tube D through the nozzle 5 in the usual manner without heating it after it leaves said delivery tube.
From the above description it will thus be obvious that this attachment is operable to supply feed water to the boiler at varying degrees of temperature, simply by shifting the valve 14 into the desired position.
It is however to be understood that as all engines are equipped with injectors, but not all with superheaters the device can be successfully used on any engine not so equipped by merely dispensing with the pipe 13 and check valve 17 and plugging up the connection for pipe 13 on top of the three-way valve.
I claim as my invention:
In combination with a pipe for connection with a superheater unit of a boiler, of a valve-controlled water supply pipe, a valvecontrolled steam supply pipe, an injector arranged between said pipes and having a delivery tube communicating therewith and provided with a check valve arranged in advance of said tube, an auxiliary injector connected at one end with said first mentioned injector in advance of said check valve and adapted to be connected at its other end with the boiler feed water tube, a steam supply pipe connecting said auxiliary injector with said first mentioned steam supply pipe above said first mentioned injector, a superheated steam supply pipe connected with said auxiliary injector connecting pipe and with the pipe for connection with the superheater unit of the boiler and having a check valve therein, and a three way valve located at the junction of said superheated steam supply pipe with the auxiliary injector connecting pipe, whereby said superheated steam supply pipe or said second mentioned injector steam supply pipe may be cut off when desired or both of them, to provide for the supply to the boiler of feed water at three different temperatures.
