SILO-DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. MP, 1917.
Application filed January 15, 1916. Serial No. 72,233.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALVA W. WooDwARn, a citizen of the United States of America, and. resident, of Blulfton, in the county of Wells and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silo-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in silo doors of that class wherein a number of doors of similar construction are arranged in vertical series to close the opening in the silo, and the object of the invention is to construct the door with means in connection therewith for securely holding the door in closed position, and which will also be useful as a step. A further object is to construct the fastening means so as to render it economical in manufacture and of great stability and capable of being adjusted so as to hold the door more firmly in position.
The objects of the invention are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing a portion of a silo with the invention shown in place;
Fig. 2 is a transverse view of Fig. 1, the silo being shown in section on the line w-w; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same:
1 is the silo and (2) is the opening in the side thereof that is closed by the series of doors (3), the vertical edges of which rest respectively in grooves (4;) that are made in the corresponding edges of the walls forming the silo. A series of cross-braces (5) are arranged so as each will extend across the opening (2) with its ends securely fixed in the walls. Also a seriesof studs (6) proj ect horizontally from each of the faces (7) of the wall into the opening (2) and extend in the same vertical plane as the cross-braces (5). The studs are arranged in opposite pairs and extend in horizontal planes that intervene midway between the braces respectively.
Each door (8) has secured upon its front a pair of cleats (8) that extend from the bottom to the top of the door. Each door has pivotally secured thereto upon its front a U-shaped iron (9) the back portion of which passes through the respective cleats which are recessed to receive the iron. The outwardly extending ends (10) of the iron are screw-threaded and connect with an angleiron (11) the respective ends of which are adapted to engage with the corresponding studs (6) that project from the opposite faces (7) of the wall, and nuts (12) are provided for each of said ends for clamping the angle-iron in adjusted positions thereupon. By this construction the door may be held in its position more or less snugly as may be desired by adjusting the angleiron upon the swinging arms or extending ends of the U-shaped iron.
When the doors are in secured position the respective angle-irons serve as alternate steps with the cross-braces (5). Each door may be readily removed by lifting its angleiron from connection with the studs which will permit of the door being moved inwardly.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a silo proper having an opening therein and oppositely disposed studs at the sides of the opening, a door, a U-shaped iron pivotally secured to the door with its back adjacent thereto, and an angle-iron adjustably secured to the swinging ends of the U-shaped iron, its ends being adapted to engage the studs respectively and secure the door in position.
2. In combination with a silo having an opening therein and series of doors for closing the opening, a series of studs extending from the walls of the silo and arranged in oppositely disposed pairs, and a hinged member for each door adapted to engage the corresponding pair of studs and hold the door in position and form a step extending across the opening.
3. In combination with a silo having an opening therein, a series of doors for closing the opening, a series of studs arranged in opposite pairs and extending into the opening from the adjacent Walls of the silo, In testimony whereof I affix my signature, a hinged U-shaped iron on each door, and in presence of two witnesses.
means in connection with each iron adapted V ALVA W. WOODVVARD. to engage the corresponding pair of studs Witnesses:
5 and secure the door and form a step extend- MATILDA METTLER,
