Be it known that I, MAURICE. LAOHMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to metal bedsteads and particularly to the construction or formation of the end sections thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction whereby the end sections or frames may be readily made in any design desired and a cheap strong section obtained.
A further object is to provide a section which, if desired, may have the appearance of a wooden section while at the same time maintaining the strength, durability and fireproof qualities of metal.
A still further object is to provide a tubular end section for bedsteads, the parts of which have square corners and of such construction that any desired design or relation of the parts may be attained in a simple, cheap and efficient manner.
The invention consists in the improved construction of end sections or frames for metal bedsteads hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an end section or frame constructed in accordance with this invention in one of the many designs in which it may be made up.
Fig. 2 is a vertical side elevation and partial section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one of the two complementary plates used in the construction.
Fig. 4 is an edge elevation of one of the spacing members used in the form shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-section taken on the line 5-5 Fig. 1 and shows the manner of spacing the complementary plates apart and locking them together to complete the frame.

tions and are preferably stamped or cut from a sheet of metal and of any desired size.
Certain portions of the material of each of the plates 1, 1 are removed intermediate the outer edges to form a plurality of openings 2. The openings in the two plates register with each other and they may be formed by a simple stamping operation in a press having suitably formed dies.
The shape and number of the openings 2 as well as their arrangement might readily be varied to meet any required condition of design or appearance. In the design shown side posts 3 are provided connected with cross rails l.
It will be understood that the plates 1, 1- may each be made up of a number of sections if desired, instead of being in one piece as shown.
The two plates 1, 1 are spaced apart by spacing members 5 preferably formed as continuous metal strips each following the contour of each opening 2. The spacing members are also preferably provided with two spaced apart preferably continuous proj ections 6, 7 upon which the plates 1, 1 seat. The spacing members are by preference strips of metal rolled with the projections 6 and 7 integral therewith and each strip is bent to shape so as to follow the contour of the opening and the ends oined together at 8 by butt welding them. When placed in the openings in the plates the members 5 space the plates apart and form a continuous wall about the opening, the free edges 9 beyond the projections 6 and 7 projecting through beyond the plates. These free edges are then turned over in a press by means of suitable dies or otherwise whereby the plates 1, 1 are clamped to the spacing members by means of the turned over edges 12 and the projections on the spacing memers.
Preferably a similarly shaped spacing member 11 is provided around the outer edge of the plates to form the outer walls of the posts 3 and upper rail 4:, the lower ends 10 of the posts 3 being left open for insertion of the usual casters.
If desired the outer spacing member 11 may be welded or brazed to the plates 1 and 1 to hold it securely in place, the members 5 in the openings 2 being held in place without such welding or brazing being necessary. The spacing member 12 for the lower rail l and the inner wall of the lower part of the posts may also be welded or brazed to the plates as this member in the construction shown is not continuous but terminates a the bottom of each post.
The simplicity of manufacturing bed sections according to this construction as well as the flexibility for great variety of designs is thought to be obvious. All that is necessary is to stamp out the two plates according to the desired design, bend the rolled strips 5 to shape to meet the contour of the openings and after inserting them in place to- .gether with the spacing members forming the outer walls, turn over the edges 9 by any suitable pressing operation.
, The side rails of the bed which join the head and foot sections may be securedto the sections in'any suitable manner, this feature forming no part of the present invention.
If desired to simulate a wooden bed the sections may be grained or'enameled to meet the requirement and any one or more of the openings filled in with a cane or other panel.
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the exact arrangement as shown and described but the construction may be widely. varied without departing from the scope-of the. invention as expressed in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is 1. An end frame for metal bedsteads'comprising complementary metal plates having registering openings and spacing members inserted between said plates and locked thereto by turned over edges of the spacing members.-
2. An end frame for metal bedsteads comprising complementary metal plates having portions removed to form posts and connecting rails and spacing members inserted between said plates and locked thereto.
3. An end frame for bedsteads comprising complementary metal plates each having registering openings and spacing members interposed between said plates and forming walls around said openings, said spacing members being locked to said plates.
4;. A tubular end frame for metal bedsteads comprising two complementary metal plates each having registering openings and continuous spacing members having the same shape as the openings and interposed between said plates to form walls around said openings, said'spacing members being locked to said plates by turned over metal of the spacing members.
5. A tubular end section for metal bedsteads comprising two complementary metal plates having a plurality of openings intermediate the edges and continuous spacing members interposed between and interlocked with said plates and forming walls around said openings.
6. A tubular end section for metal bedsteads comprising two complementary metal plates having a plurality of openings intermediate the edges, continuous spacing members interposed between and interlocked with said plates and forming walls around said openings and a combined spacing and locking strip forming the outer walls of the section.
7. In an end section for metal bedsteads, the combination of two complementary metal plates having a plurality of openings intermediate the edges and spacing members having projections upon which said side plates seat, said spacing members forming walls around the edges of said openings and being interlocked with said plates by the bent over, edge of the spacing members.
8. In an end section for metal bedsteads, the combination of two complementary metal plates having portions removed to form side posts and a plurality of openings between the side posts leaving strips connecting the posts, continuous spacing members forming walls around said openings and locked to said plates by bent over metal of the spacing members and a spacing strip forming the end walls of the posts and interlocked with said plates.
9. An end section for metal bedsteads comprising two complementary metal plates having a plurality of separated openings in termediate the edges and combined spacing and locking members forming walls around said openings.
10. An end section or frame for bedsteads comprising two complementary face plates having openings intermediate the edges, spacing members forming the walls of the openings, and means for securing said plates to said spacing members.
