MATCH-IB OX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1901"?.
Application filed July 19, 1916. Serial No. 110,220.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK l-lEEsH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lake Como, in the county of Wayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain useful Improvements in Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being .had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in match boxes, one object of the invention being the provision of a match box in which mechanism is provided for delivering one match at a time, and by means of which the matches are stored in a safe condition when not in use.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction and thoroughly eliicient and practical in use.
1n the accompanying drawings;
Figure l is a front elevation of the complete match box, made according to and embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2 2 thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a casing having a transverse par. tition 6 dividing the same into two compartments 7 and S, one of said compartments being provided with an outlet opening 9, while the other is provided with an outlet 10 at the opposite end of the box.
Mounted in each compartment adjacent the outlet opening thereof is a roller or shaft 11 having the operating knob 12 ex teriorly thereof, while adapted to be wound upon said roller within the compartment is a flexible strip la of any desired material, the opposite end thereof being attached to the bar 14, having the central notch or recess 15 to permit of the bar to. be guided on the longitudinally arranged strip 15 carried by the wall of the casing. The bar is of sufficient size to substantially fill the compartment so that the matches 16 will be disposed therein in a single layer and spaced from the wall of the casing by the strip 15 to prevent accidental ignition of the matches while they arewbeing withdrawn, the innermost notch abutting the bar and cooperating therewith to assist when the roller is rotated to wind thereon the flexible material and feed one match at a time to its respective outer opening.
Disposed adjacent to each of the respective outer openings is a metal strip 17 which is provided with the inwardly projecting lug or projection 18 for disposition in the path of the matches, the same being a resilient member so as to normally hold the matches from accidental spilling, but not interfering withthe feed thereof when its respective roller is operated.
lt will thus be seen that both of the rollers are operable from the same end of the box or case, while upon the opposite end is pro vided the striker 19. 1n this form of match box or safe, it is apparent that the matches are kept in a safe condition and are only fed therefrom one at a time as desired.
What l claim as new is 1. A. match box including a casing having an outlet opening adjacent one end thereof, a match feeding bar mounted in the casing, a flexible strip connected to the bar, means for operating the strip to move the bar and feed and deliver matches through the outlet opening, means for guiding the match feeding bar and for spacing the heads of the matches from the wall of the casing to prevent accidental ignition thereof during the actuation ofthe operating means, and means for retarding matches mounted adjacent the opening.
2. A match box including a casing having an outlet opening adjacent one end thereof, a match feeding bar mounted in the casing and provided with a groovea flexible strip connected to the feeding bar for receiving a single layer of matches, a roller operatively mounted in the casing adjacent the outlet opening and having the flexible strip connected thereto and windable thereabout to consequently actuate the feed bar so as to deliver matches from the opening, a strip mounted longitudinally of the inner surface .the casing to prevent accidental ignition thereof'durng the operation of the roller, and 2Ll resilient match reterding member mounted adjacent the outlet opening for :1llowing only one match to be delivered et :t time.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MR. FRANK I-IEESH.
