IRONING TABLE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC-23.1916.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
WILLIAM REID, 0F MACGLESFIELD, NORTH CAROLINA.
IRONING-TAJBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented APR. 3, 1917.
Application filed December 23, 1916. Serial No. 138,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM REID, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macclesfield, in the county of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in ironing tables and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the ironing board may be readily and conveniently elevated in order to facilitate the application thereto of clothing or for any other purpose as may be required by the necessities of practice.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein convenient means is provided for receiving clothing or the like so that the same will not come in contact with the floor or other surface.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved ironing table whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating an ironing table constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved ironing table comprises the base blocks 1 of predetermined configuration and dimensions which have extending upwardly therefrom the standards 2, said standards and blocks being connected by the horizontally disposed brace member 3.
The horizontal brace 3 is rovided with a plurality of pairs of upstan ing arms 4, the
arms of each pair being transversely related. The arms 4 are adapted to serve as a support for a suitable cloth whereby a receptacle will be provided to receive the clothing or the like to keep the same out of contact with the floor or other supporting surface.
B denotes the ironlng board or table proper of predetermined dimensions and secured to the under surface of said board at a predetermined distance inwardly-of one of the ends thereof is a. hinge leaf 5 adapted to be pivotally connected through the medium of the removable pintle 6 with the hinge leaf 7 carried by the upper end portion of one of the standards 2. The opposite end portion of the board or table B is provided with the depending eye member 8 with which is adapted to be engaged the hook member 9 carried by the second standard 2, whereby it will be perceived that detachable means is provided for holding the board or table B against upward movement about the pivot afforded by the pintle 6.
Hingedly connected, as at 10, with the inner face of one of the base blocks 1 and arranged for rocking movement in a vertical direction is the elongated lever or arm 11, the free end portion of said arm being directed through a slot or recess 12 produced in the lower portion of the second block 1. The outer extremity of the lever or arm 11 is provided with an upstandin eye bolt 14 with which is loosely engage the hook member 15. The hook member 15 is adapted to be detachably engaged. with the eye 16 formed on the outer end of the rod 17 depending from the under surface of the board or table B adjacent the end thereof in close proximity to the standard 2 with which the board or table B is pivotally engaged. It is thought to be self-evident that by exerting a slight pressure by the foot upon the arm or lever 11 the board or table B will be rocked or tilted into a slightly elevated position in order to facilitate the application of certain articles of clothing or the like to the board or table. It is thought to be self-evident that before the arm or lever 11 is depressed the hook member 9 is detached from the eye 8.
also find it of advantage to provide the upper surface of the board or table B beyond the standard 2 with which said board or table B is pivotally connected, with the upstanding flanges 18 to aflord a compartevent when the hook member is released from the rod 17.
From the foreg thought to be obvious that an ironing table constructed in accordance with my inven tion is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which, it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown 1n carrylng out my inoing description, it is vention in claimed.
I claim: v A device of the character described coinprising vertically disfiosed supporting memers, a board-hinge y connected with the upper portion of one of said members and adapted to rest upon the u per extremities of the members, said boar extending outwardly beyond one of the members, an arm disposed longitudinally of the board and hingedly engaged with the supporting member remote om the pivotally-mounted portion of the board, said arm terminating below the outwardly extended portion of the board, and a connection between the outwardly extended portion of the board and the free end portion said board is rocked in a vertical direction upon depression of the arm.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM REID. Witnesses:
