To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osnrn W. PEDEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Bag Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an attachment for tobacco bags, it being the object and purpose of the invention to provide an attachment which may be applied to bags for holding tobacco or like products usually made of cloth, the open end of which is closed ordinarily by draw strings. The attachment is in the nature of a closure which may be detachably secured at the open end of the bag and operated to either close the bag against escape of its contents or which can be opened to freely permit removal of the whole or part of the contents. In the present use of tobacco bags of this character it is necessary whenever any of the contents of the bag is to be removed to pull the sides of the opening apart and after a desired portion of the contents has been removed effect the closure by drawing upon the closing strings from either direction this being very inconvenient and wasteful. In my invention, by use of a very simple and economically manufactured attachment a closure may be detachably applied to the open end of the bag and one which is very simple and easily operated. Also when the bag has had the contents removed the closure may be detached and applied to another bag. In addition to the above named objects and purposes, many additional objects and purposes together with novel and useful constructions for attaining thesame will appear as understanding is had of the invention from the description and the accompanying drawing, in which;

Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, a plan and a side elevation of one member of the closure.

Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, a plan and a side elevatlon of a coacting IIIGIIIUQI' of the device.

Fig. 5 shows a plan and edge view of the movable sliding plate in the closure; and

Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively plan and side elevations, the latter figure having parts broken away to better disclose the operation of the closure as it appears in use upon a tobacco bag.

The attachment is comprised of three parts, one of which illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 includes an oblong rectangular plate 1 having a central opening 4 from the edges of which project upwardly walls 2 being provided in the sides with a groove 3.

A coacting member of the closure illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a plate 5 slightly longer than the plate 1 heretofore described also having an upwardly projecting wall 6 around a central opening 7, the dimension of which is larger than that of the wall 2 so that the latter wall can be received within wall 6. Extensions 8 are provided to each side member of the wall 6 and on the inner sides of these extensions are made to slidably receive the closing member hereafter described. The plate 5 at each end is turned back underneath the body of the plate for a distance forming a recess at 9, is then bent outwardly at 10 terminating in the downwardly and outwardly extending ends 11, the formation being substantially that best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 7 The opening 7 is closed by a plate 12 having at each side a tapered or narrowed edge 1.3 adapted to be received within the guides formed in the extensions 8 so that plate 12 is slidable back and forth in said guideways. A- projection 14 is formed on the upper side of the plate to be engaged by the finger or thumb for slidably moving the plate while on the underside a projection 15 is provided to strike against the end portions of the wall 6 preventing disengagement of the plate.

In practice a tobacco bag when it is received filled with tobacco has its upper'end open sufliciently that the plate 1 may be inserted in the bag and rest upon the contents thereof. This bag is illustrated in dotted outline at 16 and after the plate 1 is inserted the draw strings 17 are drawn as tightly as possible against wall 2 passing through the upper end of the bag, these strings and that portion of the bag on the inner side thereof seating in the groove 8. Plate 5 is then placed over the bag, the recess at the bend 9 at one end being engaged around one end of the plate 1 and clasping the material of the bag between said bend and the end of the plate 1 after which the opposite end of the plate may be snapped over the opposite end of the plate 1, the members in this manner being held together securely against any accidental displacement, but readily separable when suiiicient pressure is exerted undereasily moved toone side to permit removal of such part of the contents as is desired after which it may be returned to place.

A closure of this character made of thin metal may be manufactured at nominal cost and when applied to a cloth bag containing smoking tobacco gives this bag as ready and easy a means, of dispensing its contents as may be found in much more expensive tobacco receptacles. The formation of the dispensing opening may be greatly varied to suit different kinds of tobacco and also the particular and specific type of closing plate shown is not in any way essential to the practical working of the device. Accordingly I do not wish to be limited to the specific disclosure made but consider myself entitled to all modifications in structure falling within the scope of the appended claims defining the invention.

I claim 1. In a device of the character described,

an inner member of metal having anopening therethrough, and a wall surrounding the opening and projecting at right angles from the body of said member, an outer member also having an opening there through and including a wall surrounding the opening, said wall on the outer member adapted to surround the wall on the inner member, a movable closure element to close said openings, and devices formed integral with said outer member adapted to detachably engage the body of the inner member, substantially as described.

2. In a device ofthe character described, a plate having a central opening therein, a Wall surrounding the opening and projecting at right angles from the plate, said wall having an inwardly extending V groove Copies of this patent may be obtained for formed therein, a second wall surrounding the first wall, spring devices formed intogral with said second wall detachably engaging said plate, and a movable closure element to cover the openings at one end of said walls.

3. In a device of the character described,

an inner member comprised of a plate having a central opening and a wall surrounding the opening and projecting at right an gles from the plate, an outer member comprised of a plate also having a central opening with a wall surrounding the opening and projecting at right angles from the plate, said wall on the outer member adapted to surround the wall on the inner member, a movable closure element mounted on the wall of the outer member, and means on the plate of said member adapting it to detachably connect to the inner member, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the character described, an inner member comprised of a plate having a central opening and a wall around the opening projecting at right angles to the plate, an outer member comprised of a plate also having a central opening with awall around the opening projecting at right angles to the plate, said wall on the outer mem ber adapted to surround the wall on the inner member, a movable closure element mounted on the wall of the outer member, and means on each end of the plate of said outer member to detachahly engage with the ends of the plate of the inner member.

5. In a device of the character described, an inner member comprised of a plate having an opening and a wall around the opening projecting at an angle to the plate, an outer member including a plate also having an opening and a wall. around the opening projecting at an angle to the plate, said wall on the outer member adapted to surround the wall on the inner member, and an extension at each end of the plate of the outer member bent downwardly and inwardly and then downwardly and outwardly, adapting said outer member for detachable connection to the inner member, substantially as described.
