Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917..
Application filed October 25, 1916. Serial; No, 1273664.
residing at Buckhannon, in the county of Upshur and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Pressure-Regulator, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to gas pressure regulators, and aims to provide a novel and improved device for preventing excessive gas pressure and to maintain the pressure practically constant.
It has been found in practice, that pressure regulators now used, especially in the natural gas districts, are uncertain and unreliable in their operation, since when the regulators are adjusted for a certain number of ounces pressure, it has been found that the pressure varies considerably through each period of twenty four hours. For example, if the weight is set for a certain number of ounces for a certain period of the day, it is found that due to a greater or less consumption of the gas at other periods of the day, the pressure will either lower or rise, notwithstanding the fact that the regulator is supposed to prevent material fluctuations in pressure.
The present invention resides in the provision of an attachment for use with an ordinary regulator, whereby the desired results are obtained, the pressure being maintained constant, so as to avoid excessive pressure, waste of gas, probable explosions due to excessive gas pressure, and other objections.
It is also the object of the invention to provide a device of the nature indicated which is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, which can be readily applied to ordinary regulators to insure of the accurate operation thereof, and which is thoroughly practical, reliable and eilicient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the-description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawlng, wherein the figure is a diagrammatical view of the invention as applied to the regulator.
In the drawing, there is illustrated the gas conduit or main 1 connected to the well to receive the gas therefrom, the gas flowing in the direction of the arrow. This conduit is provided with a regulating valve 2 of any suitable type, with which a regulator 3 is assembled, the same being operated by gas flowing through a pipe 4: connected to the conduit 1 at the low pressure side thereof remote from the well. The regulator 3 has a lever 5 outstanding therefrom and upon which a weight 6 is adjustable for different pressures in the supply main.
The present attachment embodies the use of a gasometer, including a vessel or tank 7 containing oil, water or other liquid, and a bell 8 submerged in the liquid. A pipe 9 is connected to the conduit 1 at the low pressure side of the regulating valve 2, and extends upwardly within the bell 8. A depending bar or member 10 is secured to the lever 5 near its free end, and its lower end salts upon the top of the bell 8. Suitable weights 11 can be disposed on the bell 8, to make the same heavier, and requiring greater pressure to raise the bell.
When the pressure is low in the gas main, the hell 8 lowers, and thereby leaves the lever 5 free to operate as usual, said lever being moved downwardly under the influence of the weight 6 to open the valve 2, whereby to increase the pressure in the main at the low pressure side of the valve 2. Should the pressure tend to increase above a predetermined amount in the low pressure side of the conduit 1, this increase in pressure is transmitted to hell 8, the gas flowing into the bell 8, whereby the hell 8 is raised and in contacting with the bar 10 will raise the lever 5 toshut off the flow of gas sufiiciently to prevent excessive pressure in the main.
This device has been found in actual practice to render the regulator 3 reliable in operation, and'whereas great fluctuations in pressure resulted simply with the use of the' regulator, such fluctuations are reduced to a negligible amount when the present attachment is used. The advantages of providing a constant pressure in the gas main are Well known, and lengthy comment along this line is not necessary.
What is claimed is The combination with a gas conduit, a pressure regulator therefor including a controlling Weight lever, and a pipe connecting said regulator With the gas conduit at the low pressure side of said regulator, of a gasometer including a tank and a bell there- I in located below the free end of said lever,
