To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OTTO GoETzKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of "New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors and Blades, of which the following is a specifi-' cation.

My invention relates to safety razors and blades therefor.

In razors constructed in accordance with my invention, the holder and its handle, that is to say, the entire razor, with the. exception of the removable and replaceable blades, is permanently connected together in such manner that it may be readily opened and closed forthe insertion and removal of the replaceable blades, and the cleaning and drying of the device is easily and conveniently accomplished. With a holder so constructed of articulated parts, the arrangement and manipulation of the parts for the clamping and unclamping of the blade is made extremely simple, and there is no opportunity for any of the parts to be mislaid or lost, as may occur in safety razors in which the'various parts of the holder are not permanently connected together.

In the embodiment of my improved razor selected for illustration these desirable results are accomplished by making the rear or bottom part of the holder in two halves and hinging each of the halves to the top portion of the holder at the ends thereof, and providing a handle piece on each of these hinged halves of the under portion of the holder, and detachable means for securingsuch handle pieces together at the ends thereof remote from the holder head. Such construction, in addition, to aflording the advantageous features already referred to, provides a two-piece handle composed of parallel separated members, and I have found that a handle so made up is particularly advantageous in the act of shaving, as it, affords a comparatively broad holding means which does not turn readily in the hands, and the thumb of the user rests naturally in the opening between the two parallel handle members. With the handle so constructed there is none ofthe turning of the razor or of the handle with respect to the razor, which may occur with the ordinary cylindrical handle commonly provided in the safety razors of the hoe type, to the Specification 'of Letters Patent. Another feature of the invention which is of importance resides in the fact that the parts of the razor, being hinged together at their ends, may readily be rounded off smooth, the hinged construction lending it'- self naturally to the provision of such rounded ends and affording protection improvement of which type of safety razor against cutting the flesh with the corners of the blades and scratching the flesh with sharp corners of the holder.

The blade which ispreferably used in a razor in accordance with my invention has cutting edges at each side, though blades with a single cutting edge may be used, and such double-edged blade when present is preferably provided with a central stifl'ening backing which may be utilized to correctly position the blade in the holder,

With the foregoing and related objects in view, my invention consists in the parts, improvements and combinations herein set forth and claimed. I

In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated, for the purpose of making my invention clearly understood, a preferred 1 thereof remote from the holder with detachembodiment thereof and certain modifications. Reference character 10 is applied to designate the main, top or outer portion of the holder. This principal holder member 10 may be provided with a central longitudinal groove 11. The under or .rear holder mem, bers 12,- 12 are preferably two in number, and each one is preferably about half the length of the principal holder member 10. They preferably carry the guard consisting, in' the form shown, of teeth 13, and are hinged to the principal holder member 10 preferably at the ends thereof. on the hinge ends of the rear meinber's of the holder, which are likewise provided with transverse perforations 16, and pins 16 are passed through these alined perforations. With this arrangement the ears 15 on the rear holding members 12, 12 may readily be rounded olf as shown,as also the ends of the holder member 10 and the lugs 14 thereon so as to form a holder having smooth rounded ends, which may be used for removing hair from any part of the body without danger of cutting the fiesh or bruising or scratching the person, as may happen with razors having sharp corners at the ends and not having suflicient protecting means for the corners of the blade. While other means may be resorted to for clamping the ho der parts together, in the form shown each of the parts 12 is provided with a handle member 17 secured thereto preferably near the free end thereof, and these handle members 17 which are preferably made up of cylindrical rods or tubes, are provided at the 'ends able means for clamping the same together, and in the, form shown such detachable clamping means takes the form of a. latch 18 mounted to turn freely on one of the handle members 17 and with a notch 19 therein adapted to receive and hold a portion of the remaining handle member 17,

such portion in the form shown being at the end thereof and being reduced somewhat in diameter, as shown at 20, so that when the parts are connected together a smooth construction is afforded free from objectionable protuberances, and the handle members 17 being in use substantially parallel to one another, are conveniently grasped, the thumbof the .user resting naturally upon and between them. As will readily be observed, the handle members, when the blade is in place, may have a slight tendency to spring away from one another at their ends, and this springing tendency, together with the holding action of the latch 18, may be relied on to keep the parts in their correct assembled relation when the blade is in the holder and the handle parts clamped together. Other latches and latch holding means ma of course, be utilized if desired. The pre erred form of blade comprises two single-edged, similar portions 21 having razor edges 22 and opposite unsharpened edges 23 assembled back to back with their edges 23, 23 toward one another, and with a backing member 24 which may encircle the completed blade at'the center thereof and is preferably permanently secured in any desired way to the two blade portions. The blade portions may be notched at their ends, as shown at 25, 25, Fig. 4, leaving notches 26, 26 centrally of each end. of the completed blade and with a blade having its ends notched, one of the holder parts, as the holder member 10, may be provided with lugs 27 (Fig. 4) for entering such notches and positioning the blade properly in place. In such case the grooves 11, provided for receiving the backing when a backed blade is used, need not be so accurately formed as must be the case when the lugs 27 are dispensed with and the grooves used with the blade backing to determine the position of the blade in use. When the lugs 27 are provided' in the holder member 10 the coacting holder members 12 may be cut away to make room therefor, when the holder is closed up, as shown at 28, Fig. 4.

' backing on the opposite sides of the blade and the entire structure is clamped together as by means of the latch 18, the blade being firmly held in place in the holder by means of its backing 24:, the depth of the groove 11 in the holder portion 10 being preferably somewhat less than the thickness of the backing strip 24 in Order that the blade may be clamped tightly in place by the back.

It is to be understood that the construction illustrated is for the purpose of afford edged blade provided with a backing mem her and having recesses at each end thereof arranged to receive the said lugs for centering the blade upon the holding member, retaining means for said blade including a groove arranged to receive the said backing member, and means including a pair of cooperating handle members detachably secured together for clamping the blade between the said holding member'and the cooperating holding members.

2. A double-edged blade for safety razors comprising oppositely disposed blade portions each having a single sharpened edge and an opposite unsharpened edge, and a backing member for said blades having an opening therethrough, said unsharpened edges of the blade portions being arranged back to back within the backing member and movable in the opening therein when being clamped in position in the razor.

and an opposite unsharpened edge having a recess at each end thereof, and a backing member for said blades having an opening therethrough, said unsharpened edges of the blade portions being movable in the said opening when the double-edge blade is clamped in position in the razor and arranged back to back within the backing member to form open ended recesses at each end of the double-edged blade.

4. A safety razor including, in combination, a' holding member, cooperating holding members pivotally connected to the said holding member, a double-edged blade provided with a backing member, retaining means for said blade including a groove arranged to receive the said backing member, and means including spaced handle members for positively gripping the. razor when in shaving position and for clamping the blade between the holding member and cooperating holding members.

5. A safety razor including, in combination, a holding member, cooperating holding members pivotally connected to the said holding member, a doubled-edged blade provided with a backing member, retaining means for said blade including a groove arranged to receive the said backing member, means including spaced handle members for clamping the blade between the holding member and the cooperating holding members, and means including a latch pivoted to one of the handle members for yieldingly and detachably securing the said handle members together.
