CHARLES EICKMIER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
FGUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patenten Mar. 2'?, lili?.
. Application filed May 22, 1916. Serial No. 99,037.
To all wwm z'' may concern:
Be it known' that I, CHARLES EIGKMIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, county of Jefferson, and State of Kentucky, have` invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, .of which the following is a speccation.
This invention relates to fountain brushes intended primarily to contain liquid soap, for the use of persons shaving, although it i may be found applicable to other' purposes.
An object of this invention, is to provide a brush of the class described which shall .be facile of operation, economical and durable in service.
With the foregoing and other objects in,
view, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, wherein is set forth an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that such changes and modifications may be resorted to as come within the scope of the claims appended hereunto.
Referring nowto the drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate like 'parts in the -several views, Figure 1, isa front elevation of an embodiment of the device: Fig. 2, a. central longitudinal section: Fig. 3, a transverse section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now in detail to the drawing -11 designates a cylindrical shell, which forms the body, or handle of the brush. In the forward end *12M of the handle, a cup-shaped member -13 is suitably secured with its open end outward forming asocket for the reception of a brush -14 which is composed of bristles, or suitable material secured in a ferrule -15-, and which is provided with Y a central tube, or conduit, .-16-. The ferrule carrying the brush .is adapted to be inserted in the cup 13, and be retained there by friction. The bottom of the socket is provided with a central perforation -17-.
'The rear end of the handle is closed by a head -18- having a central perforation -19-- An elongated cup 20m extends into the interior of the handle through the perforation 19, and is provided withan annular exterior flange -21-. A washer, or other suitable packing -92--- is interposed between said flange and the head to form a fluid tightjoint. In the bottom of the cup 20 is a central perforation -23-. A valve rod k24- which extends through the opening 17 and 23 carries onr its lower end, a valve w25, adapted to close the opening 17. A' plurality of guides Q6- extended radially from .the valve-rod bear against the sides of the opening 17 and serve to center the rod. Packing -2T of any suitable material, preferably of a fibrous character, and impregnated with oil, is disposed in the bottom of thecup QIC- around the valve rod. A second cup' -28'-, provided with a. perforation -29- in its bottom, for the passage of the valve rod, -iits within the 'cup 20, bearing on and compacting the packing 27. A coil spring `30, disposed about the valve rod, is positioned in the cup 28. This spring bears 'respectively against the bottom of the cup 28, and against the inner end of a stem 31- extended from a thumb-piece, or button 3Q- which 'is adjustably attached to the valve rod by suitable means, such as screw-th1jeads -33-. It will be observed that the spring serves three functions, viz: t keeps the valve 25 and the cup 20 seated and the packing 22 compressed. Pressure on the thumb-piece will open the valve, the degree of the opening, if the thumb-piece is entirely depressed, depending on the distance between the bottom ofthe thumb-piece and the end of they cup .26, which space may be regulated by screwing the-thumb-piece on or ofi' 7of the valve rod. i
To prepare the device for service, it is held with the brush end upward, the brush removed from the socket, the thumb piece pressed. in, thereby opening the valve 25.
handle, the thumb-piece released, closing the valve and the brush replaced in the socket. To use, the bristles are lirst dipped in water,
then the brush held downward, the piece depressed and a suitable quantity otff soap allowed to flow from the reservon-,l the soap finding its way into the brush through the tube 1G: The brush may then be usedfjx.
in theusual. manner. lifter use the bristles maybe removed and thoroughly washer' From the foregoing description i be seen that l'have produced a fountain brusl'l, of convenient manipulation, and which may readily be sterilized, thus conforming to the sanitary requirements of the laws of various States.
' ,rations inthe bottoms thereof, a Valve clos- ,ing said outlet, a .rod leading fromsaid valve through the perorations inv said' cups, a
springdisposed about saidrod Withinthe' f interior cup, :anda thumb-piece adjustably 'attached to' the end of' the rod.
ln a device of the character' described, a reservoir, "a soeftetpositioned in one end thereof, 1a brush removably positioned in said socket, said reservoir having' anfoutiet into said socket, and havin-g anopenin -opposite the outlet, a cup removably positioned in said opening, a second cup telesoopioally fitted in the r'st ,mentioned cup, said cups iavingaiined partei-ations in the bottoms thereof, a -valve for said outlet, a rodleziding Atrom said 'vilve throng the perforavtions in 'the oups., a spring disposed about cup, said cups said'rod,a11d a thumb-piece adjustabl'yat;v
tached'to the end; of the rod.l
3. In a fountain brush, a tubular reservoir hinting ra-'restricted opening at one end and an unrestricted opening` at the other` end, a Socket positioned in the latter opening, a brush removably positioned in said socket, a cup extended through said restricted opening into the reservoir, a ange on the outer a thumb piece adjustably connected to the -outer end oi said rod and a spring disposed abouty the rod Within the interior cup and bearing respectively1 on the ybottom of the cup and said thumb piece, `said spring serving to 'close the valve and to maintain the cups- 1n position relative to each other and to the reservoir.
