"ma l VFuz-4 PATENT FFICE.
ALEXANDER LOWE, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN UTERINE SUPPOR'| ERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,040, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER LOWE, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Uterine Supporters, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to render support to the uterus.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a soft iiexible cup, (as hereafter described,) supported by two arched oval prongs, being arranged and adjusted so that they will form an arch which will expand larger as additional weight is applied at the end to which the cup is attached, as hereafter described.
Figure l is an outline view of my instrument from the line Z Z. Fig. 2 is a section through the line X X. Fig. 3 is an outline view from the line Y Y. Fig. 4 is a. section through the line V V.
A is a soft flexible cup, provided at the ,bottom with an opening, B, which leads or extends through the neck C, which is a connecting barrel between A andthe (arch) oval prongs D D. Said prongs D Dl are made in this peculiar shape to admit of heilig easily introduced into the cavity for which they are intended, and withdrawn with the same comparative ease, by being operated from the lower or greatest vibrating ends, which, in consequence of their thinness and flexibility at this end, and being situated in the smallest part of the cavity, the pressure of the walls thereof cause said ends to meet, forming at the same time an arch or bulge (between this and the cup end) which increases in size to a certain extent as additional weight is applied at the said cup end, which may be illustrated by pressing upon one end of a double elliptic spring, (like th at used upon a wagon,) while the other end is held between the jaws of a vise. The result is, of course, a bulge at or near the center.
The prongs D D are closed as nearly as pos'- sible, which tends to atten the whole instrument. The introduction is then made with care to enter the end or neck of the uterus into iiexible cup, which, after being properly adjusted, the instrument will perform its duty as accurately as could the human hand if the same could be applied instead; and as no obstruction is made to the passage, nothing will remain that would pass off were the instrument dispensed with.
As it is necessary .to alter the position of the cup from parallel with the center of prongs D D to that of different angles, to meet the requirements of different cases and circumstances connected with the complaint for which the instrulnent is intended, I make no claim for any particular position thereof; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
The supporter, consisting of the perforated cup A and the oval arched supports D D, all from a single piece of soft rubber, as shown and described.
ALEXANDER LOWE.
