HARRY H. STYLL AND HAROLD K. PARSONS, OF SOUTHBRI DGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
LENS-BLOTTIN G MACHINE.
Application filed December 18, 1915.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, llAunv l-I. S'rYLL and HAnoLo K. IAnsoNs, citizens of the 'United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and Stute of Mussachusetts, have invented certnin new and ,useful Improvements in LensSlotting Machines, of which the following` is a specification.
Our invention relates. to improvements in lens slotting machines, :ind has for its lendingobject the provision of a simple, inexpensive und durahle constriu'ztion, h v the use of which a slot of any desired size or shupe may be formed in the lens, ond in :my desired relation to the geometrical axes thereof.
A further object of our invention is the provision of an improved device of this character Vwhich may he used as a chart or protroctor for laying out the geometrical. axis, direction of slot, variety of slot or the like, if desired, in addition'to serving,r :is a slotting guide.
Other 'objects and advantages of our improved construct-ion should he readily npparent by reference to the following description taken in connection With the accomponying drawings, and it will be understood that we may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described -within the scope of the ipi'aended claims Without departing from or exceeding the spirit of our invention.

responding parts throughout the severallviews, the numeral l` designates the moin friime or buse of tl ie i'nuchine.l having rising therefrom the joui-nul hearings ff 4for the spindle 3, carrying; the abrasive o. cutting disk 4,'while rising," from the hose l u suit :dile distance from the periphery of the disk 4 is the standard 5 preferably termin sting' in the socket (i to reoei ve the oop '7 for clan'ipiing in position the hall or ru'iiversui joint member 8 on the underside o' the lens summit ing; table 9. This hall muy be either directly clamped in the socket,y or the lower portion 6 of the siclet may he rcsiliently forced upward inio engagement with the hell, as by a sprirg 10, which will at all times hold the boil tightly clamped und vet' permit of shifting of the table Without loosening of the cap 7 ns is otherwise necessary.
In the form of our invention illustratedin Figs. I and III for example, We-have shown as carriedr hy the neet'. 11 oi the ball 8, the. table 9, which in III is shown as beerq 'ing on its upper nce a 'plurality of longi-u tudinally extending lines or scorings 12, the central one being designed to indicate the position of the ,ojemnetricol exis of the lens, and the lines at each. side denote the variations above or below center, as megI be desired. In addition there is formed stone" edgengf..il1e...to.l)le the note-h1 1B, While dismpos'ed' imv'n'rldly thereof on the central line 12 isV o.` representuton of n circle or oper tureV 14 for use in the laying out of various types ofnotched or slotted lenses. In oddition the face of the table bears nt each side slightly off center a diagonally disposed line or designation l5, havin( a. short heavy portion and a lighter contin ation extending substantially -to the other edge of the table. These are useful in the laying out of special bevel slots for particular forms of lens attachments, inasmuch as a. lens marking pencil may be employe to'indicate on the lens the length oft-lie sh orthenvy portion of the line, and an additional mark pleoed et the vthe device A lens and slidfgdovvnwiudv leaynga.
opposite edge of the lens and on thev same straight line, when the lens is turned with the points marked at its two edges coinciding with the center line 12 and moved outwardly alon that as a guide until the correct depth o slot as indicated by the heavy portion ol the linehas been formed.
In addition to the several series of straight lines just described We may if desired place on the table 9 at any desired relation to the edge thereof one or more ellipses 16, denoting various standards, sizes andI shapes of lenses, so that by placing of a lens with its edge fitting one of these ellipses the geometrical Will ho caused to coincide with the axis' designating line onthe table.
It preferred, in place of making use of ellipses or the like for positionin the lens to determine its exact geometrica axes, vire may milice use of an automatic centering device, such that particularly illustrated in liig. IV for example. This construction comprises a .pair of arms 17 united as by a hollow rivet '17 which is slidably mounted onA the neck 1l of the table support, the arm 17 having projecting thereabov'e .the lens edge engaging pins 18 slightly undercut as at 19, so that they will satisfactorily hold the lens against the table, two of the pins l having depending handle portions 20 Whichmay be engaged and pressed to separate the pair of lens engaging pnsl at each end of the lens lagainst the tension of the impelling spring' or springs 21, as should -b'e readily understood by reference to Fig. IV. The
hollow' rivet if desired may have frictions] engagement with `the post 11 to aid in retaining the parts in either raised or lowered position as desired. It will be understood that the table 9 is provided with arcuate slots 22 to accommodate the pins 18 while a fol# lower 23 slidably mounted in a guide wa on the under side ofthe table, and. fore Q inward by a light spring 24 fits between the arms 17 to insure centering thereof and prevent their bodily rotation about the member 11 as a. pivot without in any way interfer-ing with their relative adjustment It will thus be seen that by pressing tof portion 20 of the pins the pair stench-.end

lIn the form of the invention 1n Figs'. V and-VI we employ the supplemental lens clamping table 29 providedV with a deff pendingpin' 26 adapted toenga'ge in "one of the apertures 25 formed' in the maintable 9. lf desired, in order to facilitatev vary'ngof.
position and the osition of theA pivot pin 26 relative to :the ens clam table 29 this pin may be carried byy a gui e 27 sliding in a groove 28 on the under side of the table 29; In either event the table has rising therefrom a suitable lens centering device-such as thepair of stationary pins 80 at the front edge thereof and the pivoted arm 811 bearing the lens clamping pins 32 held in operative positionas by the spring 33, the pms 3 2 under the influence of the s 'ring 83 clam ing'the lens and securely hol ing 1t forwar 4in centered against the pins 30, as'illus'- trated.
It is to be noted in connection with'the first ,described form of our. inventionthat .and out movement contro led vas by theoperating leveikl. As a. result of this arrangement either the lens 35 to be, out or slotted may be moved inwardly into engagement with thevouttin disk 4 or the lever 34 may be depressed to ring the disk forward into cutting vrelelifn to the table 9. This forward feed may -be either manually controlled by pressure on the lever 34 or may be 'a matter of automatic operation as b y a spring 36, serving to draw the cuttingdisk toward the lens, a stop 37 inveither event' being preferably employed to limitthe depth of the cut. j i i In that form'o the inventionv illustrated in Figs.`V and VI, should it be desired-to form the type of a erture illustrated in Fig.. `VII for example, t e pin 26' would be set in theaperture 25 adiacenti/allie: 'e e of the table .9, the 'lnsfbeing clamped wit itsedge overhanging th A l cuttin iskis: -movf -into'engagexnent therewith st forming. a substantially straight cut, after which the table may be given a slight swinging movement about the' ivot 26, which being located almost beneat the edge .of thev lens, will cause a wid on theinnery ortion'of theeutto'awedge drin', i

From the foregoing descriptin taken" connection with the accompanying drav'v'` 4ings, the construction and oV ration ofenr improved machine should readily ap'- parent, and it willbe seen thatywe have rovided a simple and eiiicient machine em.- iodying a l'ens'supporting table ada tedl in addition to serve as a protractor an guide Y in laying out the various typesofnotehes or --slots which may be formed by the machine,
