This invention relates to a key duplicating machine. r
It is aimed to provide a generally improved and relatively inexpensive, durable and eficient machine particularly wherein a pivot' post is provided to hold or support'the keys and their holding clamps and generally mount them {so that both the pa'ttern and blank keys maybe moved to any positionfrequired with maintenanceof perfect 'alinement relativelyto each other.
v Another object is to provide a construction wherein the key may be moved completely'in the path of a circle to better position'it w th respect to gauge or cutting means. 1 A further object is to prov1de'a novel construction wherein a trimming Lor roughing means is used initially'to expedlte the -work;
A further object is to provide anovel construction of clamping means for the keys, particularly utilizing pointed elements and a double binding screw arrangement.

Means is provided whereby the cylinder 27 and frame 29 may be secured together in binding relation if desired, and tOthigend a set screw 38 is carried by the cylinder 27.
To prevent turning of the cylinder 27 relative to thecarriage, the latter has a set screw 38 provided with an extension 39 wl11cl 1-en-- gages a vertically elongated slot 40 in the periphery of sleeve 27.
Means is provided whereby the frame 29 and cylinder 27 may be raised unitarily. i To this end, a pin 41 projects radially from the sleeve 27 and passes through a vertically elongated lslot. 42 inthe carriage, which permits the vertical movement of such pin. Beyond the carriage, the pin is disposed in the slot 43 of a yoke 44 carried by an operating shaft 45 which is journaled in a bearing 46 formed integral with the carriage 32 and held against displacement by collars 47 pinned to the shaft 45 on opposite sides of such hearing. A hand wheel 48 may be keyed to the shaft 45. The frame 29 carries novel means for supportprovided ing in alinement, key blanks to be cut and the pattern key to be followed in cutting of the blank. The frame 29 at the upper portion thereof is open and accommodates a pair of clamping members 49 and 50 which are normally urged apart by an expansive spring 51 arranged between them. Such clamping members 49 and 50 extend beyond opposite sides of the frame 29 and;respec-' tively have key-engaging surfaces at 52 on one side thereof, which surfaces may be fiat as shown. On the other side of the frame 29, a key engaging portion ofthe clamp 50 may be pointed or sharpened as at 53 and coacts with an inclined key engaging sur-' face 54 on the clamp 49. This construction enables the point 53 to bite a key blank or better engage a key blank provided with a groove or slot. Obviously either form of retaining means-52 or 53-54 may be used, ac
cording to the adaptation thereof to the particular key blank to be engaged.
Carried by the frame 29 above the clamps 49 and 50 are clamps 55 and 56 having key engaging surfaces at 57, correspondingto those at 52 and respectively having an inclined key engaging surface 58 and a coact: ing point 59. The surfaces 52 and 57 and 5354 and 58-59, respectively are in verti cal alinement and the former are adapted to clamp a key blank betwen the same while the latter are adapted to clamp and hold a key or pattern to be followed in the cutting of the blank, hence the blank and pattern are held. in vertical alinement and according to the position or side of the frame-29in use, the frame is adjusted: or rotatedlandsecured V in theadjusted position by the'ball .35 and recesses 37. The jaws 55 and 56 are normally urged apart by an expansive spring as at 60.
A screw for securing the jaws 55 and 56 in tight relation to the engaged pattern key is shown at 61, being of the winged type and having a shank 62 screw threaded into the upper end of the frame 29 and bearing against the upper surface of the clamp 56. Another wingedscrew 62 is provided which has a screw threaded shank 63 extending through-a screw threaded bore 64 of the screw 61 extending loosely through the clamp 56 and extending through and engaging a screw threaded opening 65 in the clamp 55 and resting against the clamp 50. As a result of the screws 61 and 62, they are operable individually to apply pressure against the clamps 5.0 and 56yrespectively and they coact in serving one as a lock for the other to prevent accidental disengagement of the clamps from the keys or work.
Presuming operation, the pattern and key blank are respectively carried by the jaws 50-53 and 5556 and on either side of the frame, any type ofblank or pattern being 5 movement to the alined key pa tern and key blank, advantageously moving the pattern until itengages the gauge plate 16, the cutter 14in the meantime milling or cutting away the key blank to accord with the pattern.
Initially, in order to rapidly remove most .of the metal of the blank, the blank is moved in engagement with the milling cutter 15, and the extent thereof being limited byengagement of pattern with the gauge 18;

I claim as my'invention 1. A device of the class described comprising in combination with a cutter, a carriage,
a cylinder carried by the carriage for vertical movement, a frame carried by the cylinder to carry the work for coaction with said cutter, a pin extending from the cylinder, said carriagehaving a slotentered by and accommodatingv movementof the pin, and an operating shaft journaled on the carriage having a yoke engagingsaid pin and operable to move the latter and accordingly the cylinder and frame to move the work relatively to said cutter. i
2. Adevice of the class described comprising. in combination with a cutter, a cylinder, means operable to move the cylindervert-ica-lly relativelyto said cutter, a frame tocarry work for coaction with said cutter having a post journaled in the cylinder, said cylinder hav ing a plurality of recesses, and said post having a latch member for engagement with said recesses in its different adjusted positions and spring means urging projection of the latch member whereby its operation is automatic through rotation of the work carrying frame.
3. A machine of the class described comprising a frame having upstanding portions in spaced relation'provided with grooves, a plate slidable in said grooves, one of said portions being extended upwardly into a bearing, cutter means mounted in said bearing,- a gauge means mounted by said bearing, said cutter means and gauge means being disposed 7 above said plate, a carriage slidable onsaid plate and slidable unitarily with the plate, a frame having clamping means for a key blank and clamping means for a pattern key, a vertical cylinder turnably mounted on said carriage, said frame being j ournaled at its lower. end in said cylinder, and means operable to, 7 V vertically move said frame and cylinder, the 2.5 parts thereby being Vertically and laterally adjustable so that the key blank: and pattern,
