Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
Application filed June 30, 1916. Serial No. 106,950.
[ '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM ROSE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Albion Works, Gainsborough, in the county of Lincoln, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Connection with Apparatus for Making Paper Bags or like Receptacles, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to apparatus for making paper bags, or like receptacles, wherein a revoluble series of formers is employed as described and claimed for example in the specification of British Letters Pateut No. 3149 A. D. 1912, granted to me and Rose Brothers (Gainsborough) Limited, and wherein means areemployed whereby considerable pressure is applied to the end folds, after adhesive has been applied there to, an abutment being provided to take the thrust imparted to the said former by the presser. According to this invention the arrangement is such that should adhesive, or foreign matter, accumulate on the end folds of the bags, or receptacles, or on the face of the presser, and constitute an obstruction, damage to the mechanism will be prevented by a yielding device in the operating mecha nism, such device yielding when such 0bstruction occurs.
The operating part of the presser may be made adjustable, or removable, in order to adapt it to the kind of material of which the bags, or receptacles, are made.
The mechanism by which the presser lever is operated may comprise a duplex lever with a yielding device between its parts and with two horns, preferably carrying rollers, against one of which horns a cam acts to apply the presser, through suitable arms, or levers, and links, and against the other of which horns a cam acts to remove the presser, the two parts of the said duplex lever normally acting as one single lever through the arms, or levers, and links, upon the presser lever, a spring connection (constitutin the aforesaid yielding device) between the parts of the duplex lever allowing of independent movement of the said parts to prevent injury to the mechanism should any impediment to the operation thereof occur.
The accompanying drawings represent a construction of apparatus in accordance with this invention. Figures 1 and 2 are elevations at right angles to each other and Fig. 3 is a plan with the abutment broken away. Fig. 4 is a front elevation and F igs. 5 and 6 are an elevation at right angles to Fig. 4: and a plan of the presser proper drawn to a larger scale than that to which the other figures are drawn.
The presser-proper 1 is carried by an arm 3, which can rock on' the shaft l, carried by the frame 5. The arm 3, is connected to the arm 6, by the links 7 the arm 6 being capable 0f rocking on the shaft 8, also carried by the frame 5. The said arm (3, is eonnected by links 10, with the lever 9, which can be rocked on the shaft 11, also carried 1 by the frame 5, the said lever 9, being operated by the lever 12, through the spring connection 13. The boss of the lever 12,. is mounted so that it can turn on the boss of the lever 9. On the same boss as the said lever 12, are two roller arms 14:, 15, acted upon by the cams 16 and 17, respectively keyed on the main shaft 16 The lever 9,
is provided with a stop 18, which bears on the arm 15, so that the said arm 9, is driven positively in one direction by the cam 17, and arm 15, but the said lever 9, is driven in the reverse direction by the cam 16, and arm 14, through the spring connection 13, which spring will yield if there be any obstruction between the presser-proper 1 and the saidformer 2. The former 2, is provided with a stop 19, which comes into contact with an abutment 20, formed on arms 20*, on the frame 5, and takes the thrust of the presserproper. The spring 13, is connected by a screw-eyebolt 21, to the lever 12, so that the tension of the spring 13, can be adjusted by screwing up, or slacking, the nut 21 to regulate the amount of pressure on the ends of the bags. The presser-proper can slide in the arm 3, but is prevented from rotating by a feather 1 The construction of the presser-proper illustrated is as follows:
The bush 22, is screwed into the arm 3, and, by means of the tail piece 23, of the presser-proper, adjusts the said presser backward, or forward, when screwed out or in of the arm 3. The said screwed bush fits right up to the shoulder of the presserproper and is held on the tail piece 23, by the nut 24:. 25, is a hexagon on the bush for turning it. The collar 26, can slide on the screwed bush 22, (being prevented from turning by a feather 26 and is provided with notches 27 which are engaged by a projection 28, on the upstanding part of the arm 3, under the action of the spring 29, bearing on the said collar :28, and on a collar 22*, on the screwed bush 22, to prevent the screwed bush 22, from turning except when being adjusted.
lVhat I claim is 1. In apparatus for making receptacles such as paper bags, the combination of a presser, an abutment taking the thrust of the presser, a rock-arm carrying the presser, an actuating lever positively moved in opposite directions, a connecting lever having a toggle-like connection with the said rock-arm. a spring connecting said lever with the said actuating lever for moving the presser toward the abutment, and means for imparting positive movement from the actuating lever to the rock-arm, through the connecting lever and toggle-like arrangement, for moving the said presser away from the said abutment.
2. In apparatus for making receptacles such as paper bags, a presser, a carrier arm therefor in which the said presser is slidably mounted, an adjustable positioning presser stop carried by the said arm, and spring means for locking the said presser in its adjusted position against the said stop.
In apparatus for making receptacles such as paper bags, the combination of a presser, an abutment taking the thrust of the presser a rock-arm carrying the presser, means for adjusting the presser in the said rock-arm and a spring look for securing the presser in its adjusted position, together with an. actuating lever positively moved inopposite directions, a connecting lever connected by a toggle-like arrangement with the said rock-arm, a spring operatively interposed between the said actuating lever and connecting lever for moving the. presser toward the abutment, and means for imparting positive movement from the actuating lever to the rock-arm, through the connecting lever and togglelilte arrangement, for moving said presser away from the said abutment.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM ROSE.
