UNITED STATES PATENT orrron.
HENRY I). MANDEVILLE, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Application filed March 8, 1915, Serial No. 12,719.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. HENRY D. MANDE- vILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and the objects of the invention are to provide a machine from which the interior parts may be removed, so that all parts may be cleansed and dried andkept in a sanitary condition; one that can be placed upon a stove, so that the clothes may be boiled while being washed and thus hasten the washing process; one that will thoroughly wash garments and other articles without tearing the same; and one in which the most soiled garments may be cleansed at a minimum expenditure of time and labor.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention:
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a washing machine constructedin accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a broken plan view of the machine with its lid removed.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the machine.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the machine.
Fig. 5 is an irregular broken section on line V-V of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of two brushes employed in carrying out the invention.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a suitable tub 1 provided at its central portion with a vertically-arranged cylinder 2, rig idly secured to the tub bottom 3 by lugs 4.
5 designates a stationary shaft arranged within the cylinder 2 and provided at its upper end with a circular track 6, upon which the rollers 7 of a spider 8 travel.
The spider 8 is rotatably-mounted upon the upper portion of the shaft 5, which extends through the lid 9 of the tub, and has a thumb screw 10 for securing said lid 9 upon the tub. In addition to the rollers 7 the spider 8 is provided with rollers 11, which travel against the underside of an annular track 12 and prevent the rollers 7 from rising off the track 6.
The spider 8 is rotated by a bevel gear 13 fixed thereto and intermeshing with a bevel gear 14, extending through an opening 15 in the lid 9 and fixedly-mounted upon a shaft 16, journaled in bearings 17 and provided at Specification of Letters Patent.

its outer end with a hand-wheel 18 having a laterally projecting handle 19, so that it may be rapidly rotated in one direction when but few clothes are in the tub. The hand-wheel 18 is also provided with radial handles 20, so that both hands may be employed in rotating said wheel 18 when the tub contains a large number of clothes. The radial handles 20 also provide convenient means for imparting alternate rotary motion to the spider tom and side of the tub 1 and also surround-- ing the cylinder 2.
The bottom brushes 24 are radially arranged and spaced apart, as disclosed by Fig. 2. The brushes 2-5 and 26 lining the side of the tub and surrounding the cylinder 2, respectively, are vertically arranged with their adjacent sides abutting each other as disclosed by Fig. 6. The backs of the brushes 25 and 26 have longitudinal regis-' tering recesses 27. so that the water in the tub may flow freely between said brushes.
The brushes 24, 25 and 26, like the brushes 21 are removable, so that they may be exposed to the air and sun for the purpose of drying said brushes and keeping them sanitary. This arrangement of the brushes also permits the tub I to be maintained in a thoroughly sanitary condition by exposure to the air and sun.
In placing the brushes 241, 25 and 26 in the tub 1, the brushes 24 are first placed in position upon the bottom of the tub where they are held by flanged rings 28'' and 29 slipped down against the bottom of the tub and arranged to fit against the side of said tub and embrace the cylinder 2, respectively, as disclosed by Fig. 1. The brushes 26 are then placed around the cylinder 2 against which they are held by the ring 29 and a ring 30, which latter is slipped over the upper end of said cylinder 2. The shaft 5 is then inserted in the cylinder 2, so that the circular track 6 will overlap and hold the ring 30 firmly upon the upper ends of the brushes 26. The spider 8 is then placed in position over the upper portion of the shaft 5 and the brushes 25 are placed against. the inner surface of the side of the tub 1, where they are reliably held by the ring 28 and a flanged ring 31 slipped over the upper ends of said brushes and the upper edge of the tub 1, as disclosed by Fig. l. The ring 31 is then reliably held in place by the lid 9, which is provided at one side with a door so that articles to be washed may be placed in the tub or removed therefrom without removing the entire lid 9.
The lid 9 and the door 32 are firmly held down upon the ring 31 by clips 33. The door 32 is secured to the lid 9 by hinges 3i and is reinforced by a strip 36 secured thereto. The lid 9 is reinforced by a strip 36 firmly secured thereto and provided with a bearing 37 for the adjacent end of the shaft 16.
\Vith the foregoing arrangement of brushes, it is evident that when the agitator is actuated the articles will be thoroughly rubbed over the bristles of said brushes, and the water will be forced through said articles-until they are thoroughly cleansed. In order that the water may thoroughly circulate through the cylinder 2, slots 38 are formed therein for the entrance and discharge of water passing through the recesses 27 in the longitudinal sides of the brushes 26.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that I have produced a sanitary washing machine in which garments and other articles may be quickly and thoroughly cleansed at a minimum expenditure of time and labor, and while I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with a tub having a central cylinder therein, a shaft in the cylinder projecting thereabove, a circular track secured to the shaft and seating on the upper end of the cylinder, a spider journaled on the shaft above said track andv having rollers which ride on the track, rollers borne by the spider and extending thereahove, a lid. a circular track on the lid engaged with the last named rollers, means to -.sy as mimictor W rotate the spider and clothes engaging means borne by the spider and depending rin surroundim the to of said member and having a depending flange which engages the top ends of the brush backs which abut said member, a ring surrounding the top of the tub and having a depending flange which engages the top ends of the brush backs which abut the tub sides, and a pair of rings one of which surrounds the bottom of said member and the other of which is disposed adjacent the tub sides, said pair of rings having vertical flanges which receive the lower ends of the respective series of vertical brush backs, and having horizontal flanges which engage over the respective ends of the bottom brush backs and clothes engaging means operable in the space below the brushes.
3. In combination with a tub having a central vertical hollow member the latter provided withspaced vertical slots, a series of vertical brushes arranged in abutting relation about said member and having vertical registering side recesses which registering recesses register with said slots, and clothes engaging means operable within the tub.
4. In combination with a tub having a central vertical member therein, two series of vertical brushes abutting said member and the interior of the tub sides respec-
