To all whom it may concern:

Be'it known that I, JOHN F. HEMENWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Releases for Clothes-Wringers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pressure release for clothes wringers, the object being to provide a release which is so constructed that the releasing member will form a stop for the movably mounted top bar of the clothes wringer when moved in position to release the pressure'on the pressure rolls so as to prevent the top bar from becoming detached from the wringer frame.

Another object of my invention is to provide a pressure release in which a pair of releasing bars are carried by the top bar and cooperate with pivoted latches carried thereby which are normally arranged in keepers carried by the frame of the wringer so that when said latches are moved in position to release the pressure on the pressure rolls, the tail of the latch will be thrown into position to cooperate with the keeper for preventing the top bar from becoming detached from the wringer frame.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

In the drawing I have shown a portion of a clothes wringer of the ordinary construction now in use'in which a frame 1 is employed having pressure rolls slidably mounted therein, not shown, above which is arranged pressure means 2 wlnch is engaged by pressure screws 3 earned by a movably mounted top bar-.4 mounted within the wringer frame. The'pressure screws 3 are mounted in threaded boxes 5 earned by the top bar 4, said boxes being provided with shown at 11 to provide a recess in which the upper portion of the pivoted latch 10 is adapted to work, said latch having a lateral extension 12 which is adapted to engage the upper wall 13 of a slotted plate 14 secured to the side bars of the wringer frame, but it is, of course, understood that one of these plates is carried by the upper-end of each of the side bars and that each end of the movably mounted top bar is provided with a pivoted latch. The pivoted latch is provided at its lower end with an extension 15 forming a weight for holding the latch in the position as shown in Fig. 1. The upper and lower lateral extensions of .the latch 10 are normally held within the slot of the plate 14, the upper extension engaging the upper end of the slot so as to hold the top bar in predetermined position within the wringer frame.

In order to provide means for swinging the latches 10 on their pivots, I provide the top bar with guideways 16 in which are slidably mounted releasing bars 17 having beveled inner ends 18 adapted to be engaged by the conical'shaped lower end 19 of the shank 20 of a push button 21 which is slidably.mounted in the top bar as clearly shown,

and is surrounded by a spring 22 for normally holding the same in extended position, the lower end of said shank being preferably provided with a head 23 for preventing the push button from becoming detached from the top bar. The outer ends of the releasin bars 17 are ofiset as shown,

and are provided with slots 24 through" which the pressure screws 3 pass so as to allow the releasin bars to move laterally when the same is orced apart by the wedging action of the push button. The extreme ends of the releasing bars are reduced as shown at 24, and are adapted to engage the pivoted latches 10 below their pivots so as to spring the upper extensions 12 out of the slots of the plates 14 in order to allow the movably mountedtop bar to move vertically within the wringer frame to release the pressure on the pressure rolls.

A clothes wringer comprising a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top bar movablymounted in said frame having means for adjusting said pressure means, said top bar having recesses at its ends, pivoted latches mounted in the recesses of said top bar having spaced members extending therefrom, slotted plates carried by the side bars of said frame adapted to receive the spaced members of said latches, and means carried by the top bar'engaging said latches for moving one of said spaced members of each latch out of the slot of the adjacent plate to allow said top bar to move upwardly a predetermined distance within said frame.

A clothes wringer, comprising a frame having. pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top bar movably mounted insaid frame, threaded boxes carriedby said top bar, pressure screws mounted in said boxes for adjusting said pressure means, said boxes having extensions provided with pivots, latches mounted on said pivots having spaced laterally projecting portions, plates carried by the side bars of said frame having slots to receive said laterally projecting portions of said latches, and means carried by the top bar engaging said latches for moving one of the extensions of each pivoted latch out of the slot of said plates for allowing said top bar to move a predetermined distance within.

10. A clothes wringer, comprising a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a top bar movably mounted in said frame having pressure screws for adjusting said pressure means, plates carried by the side bars of said frame provided with slots, pivoted latches carried by the ends of the top bar having laterally projecting portions extending into the slots of said plates, the upper extension of each latch engaging the upper end of each slot for normally holding said top bar in predetermined position within said frame, and means carried by the top bar for moving the upper extension of each latch out of the slot of said plate to release said top bar and the lower extension of each latch in position to engage the upper wall of said slot for limiting the upward movement of said top bar within said frame.

11. A clothes wringer comprising a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls mounted therein, a movably mounted'top bar, carrying means for adjusting said pressure means, keepers carried by the side bars, pivoted latches carried by the movably mounted top bar having portions engaging said keepers for holding said top bar in adjusted position within said frame, releasing bars carried by said top bar, and a push button slidably mountedin said top bar cooperating with said releasing bars for moving said releasing bars in position to swing the portions of the said latches out of said keepers, and means carried by the latches cooperating with said keepers for limiting the upward movement of said top bar.
