Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Application filed April 25, 1916. Serial No. 93,461.
useful Improvements in Methods of Producing Ornamental Designs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a method for producing ornamental designs.
The object of the present invention is on felt or other coverings or fabrics which are used for cushion tops, table mats or other ornamental articles.
The invention will hereinafter be more fully described, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of an ornamental table mat produced by our method.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line22, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates in general a table mat which consists of a felt base 2, circular in shape and ornamented with the design generally indicated at B.
This design is produced by superposing the several layers of different collored fabrics indicated at, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 1 0, 11, 12, 13, 1- l5 and 16 and securing said layers together. This may be accomplished by using an adhesive material but preferably by blind stitching one layer to the other. Any number of layers of different colored fabrics may be employed and each layer or combination of layers may be cut and shaped to produce different designs, or each individual layer may consist of a distinct design and all the layers together may cooperate to produce a single design or pattern. A great variety of ornamental effects may in this manner be secured at a comparatively small expense.
The materials and finish of the individual fabric layers may be such as the judgment and experience of the manufacturer may dictate; similarly the color effect may be changed, thus providing an unlimited field for variations. In the present illustration a ring-shaped layer 3 has been placed exterior of the central group of layers indicated at B. lVhile only one layer 3 is illustrated as secured upon the base section 2, it is obvious that-this may be built up in a manner similar to the central group. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A method of producing ornamental designs, which consists in placing and securing upon a base member a plurality of partially overlapped groups 'of superposed layers of different colored fabrics.
2. The method of producing ornamental designs, which consists in forming a plurality of units each composed of superposed layers of fabric of gradually decreasing diameter, and positioning all of said units on a base member in a predetermined partially overlapping relation to form a completed design.
3. The method of producing ornamental designs which consists in forming a plurality of units each composed of superposed layers of differently colored fabric of gradually decreasing area, and then positioning all of said units on a base member in predetermined partially overlapping relation to form a complete design. I
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands in the presence .of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED S. WV. GRUN DY. ADOLF F. MARTEN.
