Description
,J.G.SCOTT COMBINATION WATER HEATER..
APPLICATION HLED JULY 29.!915.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES G. SCOTT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COMBINATION WATER-HEATER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES G. Soon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination ater-Heaters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to heating systems, but more particularly to a combined heater for cooking and for the heating of water simultaneously, and the invention has for its object to provide certain instrumentalities for carrying oif and disseminating in the outside atmosphere the noxious carbon monoxid gas which is generated by the flame from a gas burner coming in contact with the cooler surfaces of a hot water coil.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts, 'as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a vertical sectional View through a heater constructed in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals 1 indicates the heater comprising a central service burner 2 fed by the gas supply pipe 3, while f indicates theouter auxiliary heater fed by the gas pipe 5 and supplied with a pilot burner 6. I v
7 indicates the water heating coil which as shown is equipped with a superimposed coil 8, the same surrounding the inverted frusto-conical sections 9 of the dished partitioning member 10, the same being arranged so as to divide the interior of the heater encompassed by the casing 11 into a central compartment 12 and an outer surrounding compartment 13. Connected to said outer compartment 13 is a flue 14: which may be connected to a stove or other pipe 15 or which may lead directly to the outside atmosphere.
The central compartment 12 is provided with a flue opening 16 communicating with a flue of usual construction, not shown,

through which heat from said compartment 12 may pass for any desired purpose' As will be seen from the accompanying drawing an opening or space 17 is provided between each of the frusto-conical sections 9, so that a portion of the heat from the service burner 2 will be directed through the said openings 17 to the water coil within the chamber 18. By means of this construction the water coil within the chamber.
13 is heated while the device is being used for cooking purposes. For instantaneous heating of the water coil 'the auxiliary burner 4 is employed and may or may not be used in connection with the service burner 2 according to the requirements of the operator.
In operation the heat from the service burner 2 which is deflected into the outer chamber 13 and cause the formation of carbon monoxid gas therein is carried from the chamber 13 through the flue 14 and disseminated in the outside atmosphere, while the carbon monoxid gas generated within the chamber 13 under the action of the flame from the auxiliary burner 4 is likewise carried from the heater through the flue 1 1 and into the outside atmosphere, thus effectually preventing egress of the noxious gas into the room or apartment in which the heater is placed.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A device of the character described, including a central service burner, a large burner surrounding the same, a casing, a water coil arranged in said casing adjacent said large burner, a partitioning member in said casing having a central hollow depending portion comprising a series of inverted frusto-conical members arranged one above the other to provide a space between each of said inverted frusto-conical members to direct heat from said central burner to said water coil, the said casing being provided with a flue opening in communication with said central depending portion to receive heat passing therethrough from said central burner and a second flue entering said casing substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described,
including a central service burner, an auxiliary burner surrounding the same, a cas- .ing, a water coil in said casing, means for dividing the space encompassed by said easing into two compartments, said means for dividing the said space into two compartments including a hollow depending portion above said central burner and comprising a series of inverted frusto-conical members arranged one above the other to provide a space between each of said inverted frusto-conical members to direct heat from said central burner in the surrounding compartment, the said casing being provided with a fine opening in communication with said central depending portion to receive heat from said central burner, and a flue entering said casing and in communication with the outermost compartment in said casing.
3. A device of the character described, in-
eluding a central burner, a casing, means for dividing said easing into two compartments, a water heater above said burner, said dividing means including a depending portion above said burner and depending over said water heater, means for leading the products of combustion of the burner from said casing under said depending portion of said dividing means, the compartment above said dividing means being provided with an opening above said depending portion of said dividing means to lead heat from the burner from said casin In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
