DBUGGIST'S CABINET.
Application filed April 4, 1916. Serial No. 88,873.
made an Improvement in Druggists Cabinets. of which the following is a specification.
-My invention is an improvement in that class of dri'iggists cabinets containing rows of boxes or drawers arranged contiguously and adapted to be drawn out and turned laterally to expose their open sides and render their contents accessible.
The invention pertains particularly to the improved means for supporting the drawers,
":1 while in normal position in the cabinet, also when being pulled out and turned to a lateral position, whereby greater strength, durability, simplicity, and economy of construction are attained.
The details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts are as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cabinet with one drawer pulled part way out and two others pulled completely out and turned to the lateral position, thus exposing their open sides.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the cabinet, showing one drawer in section and in normal or closed position, and another pulled out and turned to the lateral position.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. i is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showingthe bottom portion of a drawer andthe slotted metal drawer-guide and support detached.
Fig. 7 is a reduced perspective view showing a drawer pulled out and being turned to 5 is a section on the line 55 of lateral position.
As shown in Fig. 1, the case or cabinet has horizontal shelves 1, on each of which is a series of contiguous boxes or drawers 2 having one side open and adapted to be pulled out far enough to permit them to be turned laterally so that their contents are accessible and removable. The means of support for each box or drawer 2 and on which they are adapted to slide and turn is a flat, slotted, metal bar, or strip, 3, shown detached in Fig. 6. As may be seen from Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Fig. 2, two such supporting-guide bars are provided for eachdra-wer, one being secured to the underside of the upper shelf and the other to the upper side. of the lower shelf. Thus the two guide bars provided for each drawer are horizontal and parallel and one directly over the other.
The slotted guide bars have an opening at each end to receive screws l-see Figs. 2 and 5-by which screws they are fastened rigidly to the shelves. A metal washer 5- see Figs. 2 and 5is applied to each screw 4: between the guide bar and the adjacent shelf to which the said bar is attached, so that the bar is held out of contact with the shelf. The shelves project at the front of the cabinet and the guide bars extend nearly, to the outer edge of the shelves, as shown in Fig. 2. Each drawer is slidably or permanently connected at top and bottom to the two over and under guide bars, by means of pivotal screw bolts 6see especially Figs. 4:, 5 and 6.
It will be noted that the washers 5 hold the guide bars 3 spaced from the shelves sufficiently to accommodate the heads of the bolts 6, so that the latter slide easily in the slots of the guide bars.
In Fig. 6 the drawer 2 is shown provided with .a groove or rabbet 7 extending along one of its bottom side edges and such groove is enlarged laterally at its inner end, as required to allow the drawer to turn laterally on the outer end of guide bars after it has been drawn out of the cabinet.
It will now be seen thatto obtain access to the open side, and thereby to the contents, of the drawer 1, it is pulled forward, by its handle, from its normal closed position into the position indicated in the upper row of drawers in Fig. 1, and in perspective view- Fig. 7whereupon it is adapted to be swung laterally on its pivots 6, which are then at the outer ends of the slots of the guide bars, and the drawer is thereby turned into position parallel to the face of adjacent drawers, that is to say, parallel to the face of the cabinet, as indicated in the second and third rows of shelves in Fig. 1, and in the sectional views, Figs. 2 and 3. Thus by a direct forward pull and then swinging it laterally, a drawer is placed in position to expose its open side. Thus each drawer in the cabinet is attached to two parallel, fixed, lower and upper, slitted guide bars 3 and is adapted to slide on said bars and to be then turned or swung on the outer ends of the same with minimum friction and wear. Thus a drawer is supported and guided by means of two parallel slotted bars and the same bolts which secure the drawers to the guide bars also constitute the pivots thereof.
I claim A druggists cabinet, comprising a series of horizontal shelves, longitudinally slotted, metal guide-bars secured to, and spaced from, the under and upper sides of adjacent shelves and projecting beyond the front of Copies of this patent may be obtained for the cabinet; slidable drawers having l0ngitudinal grooves at top and bottom for the reception of said guide-bars; and headed bolts which serve as pivots and also as means for securing the drawers to the guide-bars, permitting the drawers to swing laterally in extended position, as described.
