Be it known that we, JOSEPH FoRsrrEiM vand JOSEPH KONIGSBERG, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Great Neck, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, and the borough of Manhattan, in 'the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Locks, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention relates to locks of that type in which a protective strip of readily puncturable material is positioned over the lock and requiring mutilation for gaining access to the lock. A positioning means is also provided for the protective strip and a releasing device is provided for the positioning means. The protective strip also covers the releasing device and requires an eX- 5 tended mutilation of the strip for gaining access to the releasing device.
The object of our invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts whereby a very simple and eiiioient mechanism is obtained; in which a complete mutilation of the protective strip is insured and in which the releasing device for the protective strip is automatically returned to its locking position when its operating means is withdrawn from engagement therewith.
Our invention more particularly includes a yielding releasing device for the positioning means whereby the movable element of the positioning means may be closed and locked while the releasing device is in its locking position.
A practical embodiment of our invention is representedin the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the protective device applied to a desk lock'of well known or approved construction, the parts being shown in their lockedl position,

The lock to be protected is herein denoted by 1 and may be of any well known or approved construction. Thekeyhole of the lockis denoted by 2. The protective strip of paper or other suitable readily puncturable material is denoted by 3. Positioning means for the protective strip is provided, which positioning means comprises the following elements: The casing 4 is provided on its front face with a peripheral flange serving as a holder for theV protective strip 3. A cover 6 is hinged to the bottom of the casing 4 at its front, which cover is arranged to snugly fit, when closed, within the peripheral flange 5 of the casing and act together therewith as the positioning means for the protective strip. The back of the casing is provided with a hole 7 opposite the keyhole 2 of the lock and the cover 6 is provided with a hole 8 in alinement with said hole 7. The cover 6 is also provided with one or more holes 9.
A sliding bolt, comprising a member l0 and a yielding member 11 hinged at 12 to the member 10, is interposed between the front plate 13 and the back plate 14. These plates have holes therethrough in alinement with the holes 7 and 8.
The bolt 10, 11, is cut away so that the bolt in its sliding movement will not cover the keyhole 2 of the lock 1. A spring 15 is arranged to serve the double purpose of sliding the bolt .forward to the limit of its movement in that direction and .for swinging the yielding member of the bolt into its cover locking position, as will immediately appear.
The cover of thestrip positioning means is provided with a hook 16 on its inner face at its free end, which hook is adapted to enter a hole 17 in the front plate 13 of the casing when the cover is closed.l The yielding member 11 of the bolt 10, 11, is normally located in the path of the hook 16, and is provided with a recess 18 which is arranged to be brought into alinement with to Fig. 5, with of the releasreleasing pothe plane of y leased from the bolt.
The bolt 1G, 11, may be moved rearwardly to release the cover G of the strip positioning means, as follows: The member 10 of the bolt is provided with an abut-V ment 21 opposite the restricted end of one of the holes 9 in the cover, which abutment is arranged to be engaged by a key or other implement, not shown, inserted through the restricted end of the hole 9, the protective strip 3 and the elongated slot 22 in the front plate 13.
To insure a positive engagement of said key or other implement with the bolt 10, an elongated slot 23 may be provided in the back plate 14C in alinement with the hole 9 and slot 2 2.
Tubular rivets 24C serve to secure the front and back plates 13, 14, within the casing, through which tubular rivets suitable fastening screws 25 may be passed to secure the casing to its support over the lock 1. The heads of these screws 25 are protected by the cover (S when the cover is closed.
As the bolt 10, 11, is moved rearwardly by the key or other implement, an extended tearing or mutilation of the strip is insured before the recess 1S in the movable member 11 is brought into alinement with the hole 17 to permit the opening of the cover G. As soon as the key or other implement is removed from its engagement of the abutment 21 of the stationary member 10 of the bolt, the bolt will be returned by the spring 15 to the limit of its forward movement. By providing the bolt with a yielding member 11, the cover may be closed with the bolt in its locking position by the engagement of the hook 16 with the yielding member 11 of the bolt to move the yielding member a.
sufficient distance to cause the hook to pass over the saine and permit the movable member to snap back into the recess in the hook.
From the above description, it will be seen that access to the lock 1 can only be obtained by puncturing the protective strip over the keyhole 2 and that the protective strip can only be removed by a further extended mutilation of the protective strip for operating the releasing device for the strip positioning means. rlherefore, it will be observed that the releasing device is entirely separate Jfrom the lock and is operated separately.

protective strip therefore conceals both the keyhole 2 and the slot 22 and is disclosed through the holes 8 and 9 in the cover. To gain access to the lock 1, the strip must be punctured by the insertion of the key through the hole 8. To gain access to the releasing device, the key or other implement must be inserted at the restricted end of the hole 9 through the protective strip and the elongated slot 22 into engagement with the bolt 10, 11. As the bolt is moved rearwardly member 11 opposite the hole 17 in the front plate 13, an extended mutilation of the protective strip at the hole 9 is accomplished.
From the above description it will be seen that the releasing device for the cover may be operated by the puncturing and mutilation of the protective strip without releasing the lock and it will also be seen that the lock may be released without the operation of the releasing device. The protective strip serves as a detector for indicating visually the fact that either the lock or the releasing device has been tampered with, should such be the case.
lt is evident that slight changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention; hence we do not wish to limit ourselves strictly to the structure herein set forth, but

A lock and a protective device therefor including a protective strip, positioning means therefor arranged to permit access to the lock therethrough and a releasing device for the positioning means arranged to autoq matically return to its locking position, said strip covering both the lock and the releasing device and requiring mutilation of the same for gaining access to the lock or the releasing device and requiring extended mutilation for operating the releasing device.
